Max Verstappen could soon be free to leave Red Bull if this happens – but there's a catch
The rumours surrounding Max Verstappen had died down for a while, but they've reignited following the Red Bull driver's disappointing outing at the recently held Austrian Grand Prix.
He was hit by Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, which forced him to retire early at his team's home race. This incident widened the gap between him and the leading McLaren duo in the 2025 Formula 1 Driver Standings, potentially triggering a clause in his contract that could allow him to switch teams before the end of his tenure.
Report claims Max Verstappen is set to leave for Mercedes
The speculation made headlines again when a new Sky Italy report claimed that Mercedes boss Toto Wolff had reached a provisional agreement with Verstappen, after an exit clause in his contract reportedly became active following the Austrian Grand Prix.
After the race, Verstappen remains third in the F1 Driver Standings with 155 points. However, he is now just 9 points ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, who finished fifth in Austria and earned 10 points. Meanwhile, he trails significantly behind Oscar Piastri, who leads the standings with 216 points, and Lando Norris, who sits second with 201.
Several reports suggest that Max Verstappen will be free to decide his future if he drops out of the top three in the Driver Standings.

Here's why it may not be easy for Mercedes to poach Max Verstappen
Sky Sports reporter Craig Slater explained, 'As far as Red Bull is concerned, there has been no approach to them from Mercedes, nor, according to them, has Max Verstappen given any indication to senior management that he wants to leave at the end of the season and join another team.'
But there's a major catch. Slater added, 'My understanding is that for Max to trigger his contractual release clause, he has to be outside the top four in the Driver Standings.
He's currently third, and if he were to buy out his contract, it would cost hundreds of millions of pounds.'
Slater also noted that neither Red Bull nor Mercedes has officially responded to any of the reports.
What happened at the Austrian Grand Prix
In the last race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, Max Verstappen couldn't pull off a miracle on his team's home turf and failed to finish the race. He was hit by Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, which led to an early retirement.
Antonelli later apologised to Verstappen, and the latter was gracious in his response. In a post following the race, Verstappen wrote on Instagram, 'Unfortunately my race was over at turn 3, but these things happen. Proud of all the support throughout the weekend, thank you.'

IND vs ENG: India end second day 52 runs ahead after Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna bag four each to restrict England
India's Mohammed Siraj (PTI Photo) LONDON: Often in this series, the fighting qualities of some player or the other has bailed India out of tricky situations. Mohammed Siraj was the man on Friday. His 4/86 offered India the spark they needed to get going again in this fiercely competitive series. Prasidh Krishna followed suit with 4/62 to finally come good in the series and restrict England's lead to first-innings lead to just 23. Subsequently, Yashasvi Jaiswal took the fight to England to set up another fascinating Test. At stumps, Jaiswal was batting on 51 off 49 with nightwatchman Akash Deep at the other end, and India were 52 runs on a lively pitch at the Oval. India's early-morning collapse for 224 and England's opening onslaught looked a distant memory. The Indian team management, after much deliberation, decided to use the light roller to start resume the second day's proceedings with Karun Nair and Washington Sundar at the crease. With England one bowler due to Chris Woakes' shoulder injury, India must have also thought about using the heavy roller to flatten out the juicy Oval surface toenable Nair to build on his unbeaten half-century. The light roller helped the pitch retain most of its seamfriendly characteristics. Under the bright sun, local boy Gus Atkinson ran through the batting in 30 minutes to finish with 5/33 on his return from injury. It took Siraj and Krishna's incisive spells on either side of tea for India to recover from their indecisive strategy. Siraj and Krishna gave India breathing space after having bowled England out for 247. Till the first hour after lunch, India relied entirely on the pitch to do the trick for them. The entire team were visibly stunned when openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley went hammer and tongs up front. The scoring rate swelled to nearly eight runs per over in the first 12 overs. As it has happened mostly throughout the series, captain Shubman Gill didn't have a backup plan as England raced to 109/1 in 16 overs, losing Duckett to a reverse sweep off Akash Deep for 43 off 38. The field remained the same for every England batter. Following that opening onslaught, the three Indian seamers were left searching for the right areas to bowl. Siraj, with his experience, discovered it after lunch. Prasidh followed suit. In tandem, they stemmed the rampaging England batters. England were doing a 'Bazball' in its truest form. They didn't want the pitch and the Indian seamers to dictate proceedings. It was in sharp contrast to India's unidirectional approach to batting in seaming conditions. India played to survive. Nair looked composed on Thursday but strangely turned up tentative on Friday morning. He could add just five runs to his overnight score before Josh Tongue found his back pad in front of the stumps for 57. Washington, for the second time in two matches, holed out to a deep fielder positioned specifically for a hook shot. Tail, perhaps overwhelmed by the idea to stretch the innings long, didn't look to score, only to meekly surrender their wickets. Maybe, India missed the counterattacking spirit of Rishabh Pant. Maybe, England picked it up from India's innings. As the new ball played a few tricks, Duckett quickly switched to T20-style batting — be it running down the pitch to hit through the off-side or reverse sweeping the pacers. Crawley's dismissal for 64 off 57 to a sharp bouncer of Krishna felt like an event that came against the run of play. Once Siraj found his spot, run-scoring became tough. He went full and straight at the stumps, getting three LBWs and a bowled. Prasidh also focused on not offering any room to the English batters. There was a plan, finally. Himachal Cabinet Approves Rs 92 Lakh Mercedes Benz For Guv Despite State Facing Financial Crisis
Last Updated: The decision comes as the state reels under a looming fiscal deficit projected to exceed Rs 1 lakh crore in 2025–26, according to official reports. The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, on Friday approved the purchase of a new Mercedes-Benz worth Rs 92 lakh for Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla. The decision comes as the state reels under a looming fiscal deficit projected to exceed Rs 1 lakh crore in 2025–26, according to official reports. 'The Mercedes currently being used by the Governor has completed its service life. We have decided to procure a new vehicle for him," said Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan. Shukla is presently using a Mercedes 350 acquired in 2019 during the previous BJP regime. Before that, the Raj Bhavan used a 2013-model Mercedes 250. A Raj Bhavan official said a formal proposal was submitted to the government after a mechanical inspection of the current vehicle. 'So far, we haven't received any official response," the official added. The decision follows a recent public disagreement between the Governor and Chief Minister over drug-related issues in the state. In other key decisions, the Cabinet approved reservations for Other Backwards Classes (OBCs) in upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections. Previously, reservations were limited to SC/ST communities and women. A dedicated commission will soon be formed to collect ward-wise OBC population data to allocate seats accordingly. Himachal has 76 ULBs under the Urban Development Department. The last elections were held in March 2021, and the next are due in 2026. The Cabinet also recommended convening the state Assembly's monsoon session from August 18 to September 2. IND vs ENG 5th Test Day 3 weather and pitch report: Will rain play spoilsport again at The Oval?
Eng vs Ind 5th Test Day 3 pitch report and weather update of Kennington Oval, London: The fifth and the final Test between India and England hangs in the balance after two exhilarating days of cricket at The Oval in London. To add to the drama, the weather on the first two days made things difficult for the batters as there was significant rain on both the days. After dominating the first session with four wickets and a stunning start with the bat, the hosts saw a collapse which allowed India to claw back into the match as Prasidh Krishana and Mohammed Siraj bagged four wickets each to bowl England out for 247. India began the day at 213/6 but were all out in just 34 balls of the morning session bowled out in the next 34 deliveries for 224. Returning from an injury, Gus Atkinson impressed with a spell of 5/33 to restrict India to 224. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo In England's reply, the openers started off on a blistering note, as they scored a flurry of boundaries, not before Akash Deep sending back the dangerous Ben Duckett (43). India ended the day at 75/2 with a lead of 52 runs and with the likes of Gill and Karun Nair to follow, the hosts will hope for overcast conditions over The Oval. However, the forecast predicts it to be a pleasant day with the sun coming out. Live Events India vs England: Weather report Saturday (August 2) has good news for the fans and the Indian batters. The forecast predicts 0% chance of rain with sun coming out. Cloud cover will drop to just 6%, and temperatures will hover around 26°C. After losing overs on the first two days due to rain, the third day could prove to be the moving day of this Test as more overs are expected to be played with clear skies. India vs England: Pitch report The Oval has been better suited for batters in recent times. The pitch at the venue has been excellent for batting during County Championship and Vitality Blast matches this year. However, in the current match, the the green-top and largely overcast conditions has meant that it has assisted the pacers. With the weather likely to remain sunny, the pitch could flatten out and help the batters.
