The Emirates Cricket Board's COO Subhan Ahmed has assured that India and Pakistan will likely face each other in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, despite recent tensions. This comes after
India Champions refused to play against Pakistan Champions
in two World Championship of Legends (WCL) matches following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people.
"While I cannot give a formal guarantee, there is no risk of Pakistan and India not playing. The Asia Cup cannot be compared to private tournaments like the World Championship of Legends, where India refused to play against Pakistan in both the league stage and semi-final," Ahmed told reporters.

The
2025 Men's T20 Asia Cup is set to take place from September 9 to 28
, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi serving as host cities. Dubai will host 11 matches, including the tournament final, while Abu Dhabi will host eight games.
India's schedule
includes matches against UAE and Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10 and 14, respectively. They will also face Oman at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 19.
The tournament schedule suggests multiple opportunities for India-Pakistan encounters, as the teams could potentially meet again in the Super 4s stage and the final.
This comes at a time when cricket relations between the two nations have been strained due to the April terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.

According to an ESPNcricinfo report, Sanju Samson has told Rajasthan Royals that he wants to be released ahead of the upcoming auction for IPL 2026 season. The report added that Samson informed the RR management of his intention immediately after IPL 2025 ended. Royals haven't given Samson a definitive answer but it's very unlikely that India wicket-keeper batter will stay at the franchise. During his debut IPL season, Samson scored 206 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 115.73 with the help of one half-century. Samson has been a consistent performer in IPL, particularly for RR, where he is the highest run-getter and most-capped player. (Pic Credit: IANS) Sanju Samson's Best IPL Season With The Bat 3 / 9 IPL 2024 marked a personal best season for Sanju Samson as he scored 531 runs at an average of 48.27 and a strike rate of 153.46 in 16 matches with the help of 5 half-centuries. (Pic Credit: IANS) Sanju Samson's Total IPL Runs 6 / 9 Sanju Samson, who is known for his elegant batting style, has scored 4704 runs in 177 IPL matches at an average of 30.94 and strike rate of 139.04 so far. (Pic Credit: X) Sanju Samson's IPL Centuries, Fifties 7 / 9 Sanju Samson has carved a significant niche in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since his debut in 2013 with 3 centuries and 26 half-centuries so far. (Pic Credit: IANS) Sanju Samson's Performance During IPL 2025 Season 8 / 9 Sanju Samson played only 9 matches for Rajasthan Royals during IPL 2025 season due to a side strain, scoring 285 runs at an average of 35.62 and a strike rate of 140.39. (Pic Credit: IANS) What's Next For Sanju Samson? 9 / 9 Sanju Samson, who has been a cornerstone of Rajasthan Royals (RR) since 2013, has requested a trade from the franchise ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have shown interest in acquiring Samson. Five times champion CSK sees him as a potential successor to MS Dhoni but RR's preference for a player-for-player trade over a cash deal and Chennai's policy of not releasing players could complicate negotiations. If no trade agreement is reached, RR might release Sanju into the IPL 2026 auction pool. (Pic Credit: BCCI/IPL)

At Asia Cup, India looks to start the rebuild

Mumbai: Training sessions for the Indian women's hockey team of late have been highlighted by a few specific drills for different sets of players. Indian women's hockey team will compete at the Asia Cup in September. (HT Photo) 'The strikers are working separately and practicing their finishing. The defenders are working on their communication to be more rigid in defence,' said vice-captain Navneet Kaur. On any other occasion, this may seem natural. But as the Indian team dissected and analysed the disastrous 2024-25 FIH Pro League season, which saw them get relegated after finishing last, it found that these were the two main shortcomings. In their 16 matches, the Indians won two games, drew three and lost 11. In that run, they scored only 22 goals, made the least number of circle penetrations (210) among the nine teams, and conceded 52 penalty corners. These are alarming numbers. But they are statistics indicative of a team going through a period of transition. They do not, however, have much time to settle in, as the team gets set to compete at the Asia Cup in September, where a spot at the 2026 World Cup is on offer. Since their impressive, and unexpected, run to a fourth-place finish at the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the Indians had consistently punched above their weight. And the results followed, they finished third in the 2021-22 Pro League season and won the 2022 FIH Nations Cup. 'That was a phase when we were winning and there was a high level of confidence in the team,' Kaur said. 'Now there have been changes in the team and we lost a few matches. We have to start rebuilding that confidence as well.' A number of important senior players like, but not limited to, Rani Rampal, Vandana Katariya, Deep Grace Ekka, and Gurjit Kaur, are no longer in the squad. And the new crop of players that have come in that are yet to find their feet. 'The seniors knew what to do but the new players don't know much about how to play in pressure situations and how to handle the pressure,' said Salima Tete, the team captain. Tete is among eight players, from the 39 probables, to have earned over a hundred caps for the national team. At 23-years-old, she is the youngest of those experienced players. While the team has been working on ironing out the flaws ahead of the trip to Hangzhou, China for the Asia Cup, Tete asserted that a stronger mentality is required. 'If you are mentally weak, the other teams have already beaten you,' she said. 'Whatever has happened has happened. I want to now focus on myself, my strengths. If I work on myself, the others will also follow. I can keep saying that 'we should win,' but it should also come from the other players. Each one of us has to question what we did wrong and work to get back to the level we once were.' Also key to rising back up the ladder is getting the new generation of players to gel with each other. 'For the Tokyo Olympics, the players had been training together for a few years, but only a few are still there from that batch,' Kaur added. 'It has been difficult because there are a lot of new players. It is difficult to motivate them (because of the bad results). We need them to perform well in the next matches. They are understanding that they should learn from the previous matches and work on it for the next one.' There is less than a month to go for the next match, as India begins its Asia Cup campaign on September 5 against Thailand. And already the mood in the camp is much different than what it was on June 23, after their 2-3 defeat against China in their last Pro League match of the season. 'We went back to our rooms and everyone had sad looks on their faces. We were questioning, why are we conceding, why are we not scoring…' Tete recalled. 'But now we have to take those learnings and forget everything else because the next goal is the Asia Cup. Right now the mood is back up because we are looking at the next target. That's the only thing on our mind.' The team had taken a few steps back, even failing to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. But now they are hoping to take a few meaningful strides in the right direction.

Australia series a key part of Asia Cup build-up: Harmanpreet Singh

Captain Harmanpreet Singh on Friday said that facing the formidable Australian team on their home turf will help the Indian men's hockey team identify key areas for improvement ahead of this month's Asia Cup, which also serves as a World Cup qualifier. The Indian team departed in the early hours for Australia, where they will play a crucial four-match series against the hosts at Perth Hockey Stadium from August 15 to 21. "Playing Australia in their home conditions is always a great challenge, and that's exactly what we need at this stage of our preparations," Harmanpreet said before the team's departure. "We're treating this series as a key part of our build-up to the Asia Cup. The focus is on improving as a unit, testing ourselves against strong opposition, and building the momentum we need heading into Rajgir, he added. These matches will help us pinpoint the areas that need sharpening before the Asia Cup, and we're excited about the opportunity to play high-intensity hockey against a top side like Australia. The tour is expected to offer valuable match exposure against one of the world's highest-ranked teams, giving the coaching staff a chance to fine-tune combinations and evaluate player form ahead of the continental tournament. The matches are scheduled for August 15, 16, 19, and 21. The squad features a blend of experienced players and emerging talent and will be closely monitored as the final group for the Asia Cup is finalised. The Asia Cup will begin on August 29 in Rajgir, with the winner of the tournament earning a direct berth.
