The moos turned to boos over the depiction of a popular new video game cow character.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is protesting the design of Cow, a scooter-riding farm animal in the new 'Mario Kart World' because the character wears a nose ring.
'Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths,' PETA said in a letter (in full below) Thursday to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa.
Nintendo of America is headquartered in Redmond, Wash.
The game launched exclusively on the new Nintendo Switch 2 game console, which released in June to much fanfare. And Cow has become a breakout star, as The New York Times reported in July, with videos on social media showcasing the bovine's popularity.
PETA is less enthralled — at least when it comes to the nose ring. The organization is calling for Nintendo to redesign Cow's look, so it can 'race freely — without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines.'
Read PETA's letter to Nintendo, and watch a trailer for 'Mario Kart World' below:
Dear Mr. Furukawa:
Greetings! I'm writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA entities have more than 10 million members and supporters globally. We herd there's a new star in Mario Kart World: Cow! She is already winning hearts everywhere—including ours. But one detail has us hitting the brakes: The brass ring in Cow's nose. Would you please show empathy towards bovines and remove the nose ring? Here's why this is so important:
Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control, and even drag animals to their deaths. These brass rings are crudely stabbed through the sensitive septum of cows and bulls, which can cause lasting pain and discomfort. The dairy industry will also clip spiked nose rings on baby cows so that the comforting act of nursing from their mother causes her pain and the baby is rejected and kicked away. To control bulls, a chain might be fastened from the nose ring to the bull's horn for even more pain-driven control.
The brass ring in Cow's nose glosses over real world violence and cruelty to animals. That's why we're asking you to give this beloved bovine a small but meaningful upgrade: Remove the nose ring and let Cow race freely—without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines.
Every animal is someone. So leave the rings to Sonic and let Cow breathe free!

Tristan Rogers, who played super spy Robert Scorpio on 'General Hospital,' has died at 79

Tristan Rogers, who played legacy character Robert Scorpio on ABC's 'General Hospital,' died Friday, less than one month after he made a special appearance on the soap opera. He was 79. 'The entire 'General Hospital' family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers' passing,' said Frank Valentini, the show's executive producer, in a statement. 'Tristan has captivated our fans for 45 years and Port Charles will not be the same without him (or Robert Scorpio).' Born in Melbourne, Australia, Rogers' first foray into performing was in his early twenties and playing drums in a rock band with a group of friends. They weren't successful so Rogers turned to commercial work and modeling to earn some money. When the band dissolved, Rogers decided to give acting a try. After various roles in Australia, he also worked as a DJ and eventually moved to Los Angeles to try to break into Hollywood. He said casting directors were initially turned off by his accent but he eventually landed a two-day role on 'General Hospital' in 1980. 'I had no idea at the point how big the show was,' Rogers told fellow 'General Hospital' actor Maurice Benard on the YouTube show, 'State of Mind with Maurice Benard' in 2022. 'I had no name. I was brought in expressly to beat up the hero, Luke, (played by Anthony Geary), and then disappear,' Rogers said. His first day was half-over when then-executive producer Gloria Monty asked if he would like to stay on. They had no character written for him so for three weeks Monty asked him to just appear in scenes 'looking furtive, looking suspicious' until they came up with a storyline. It was decided he would play a spy known as 'CK8' and eventually he was given the name Robert Scorpio. The character would remain a fixture in Port Charles for the rest of Rogers' life, even when he wasn't a current cast member. Scorpio's on again/off again romance with Emma Samms' character, Holly Sutton, remained a favorite among fans. Scorpio also had a romance, and many storylines with another spy, Anna Devane, played by Finola Hughes. Scorpio and Devane shared a daughter, Robin, played by Kimberly McCullough. Samms returned to the show for a stint last fall where it was revealed that Scorpio was the father of her adult daughter, Sasha Gilmore (played by Sofia Mattson.) Rogers and Samms left the show together in November 2024 in scenes taped with a nod to 'Casablanca.' He returned to the show in July for one episode when Sasha arrived to his home in France with her new baby. It was then revealed that Rogers had lung cancer Rogers' other acting credits include 'The Bold and the Beautiful,' 'The Young & the Restless' and 'Studio City,' which won him outstanding supporting actor in a digital drama series at the Daytime Emmy Awards. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Parkerson, and a daughter and a son.

As of Friday evening, the episode has surpassed 15 million views. The live stream crashed nearly two hours in with more than 1 million people watching as she answered more questions about her 12th album "The Life of a Showgirl." She revealed the album art on the podcast and went into detail with the Kelce brothers about what went into the album as well as featured guest artists. DATE NIGHTS: Travis Kelce finally posts Taylor Swift photos on Instagram Per Front Office Sports, people are catching parts of the episode on other platforms, too. Clips from the show have totaled more than 61 million views on X, 34.5 million on TikTok and 379 million on Instagram. The "New Heights" YouTube channel has also seen more than 400,000 new subscribers since the episode went live. The show's Instagram page surpassed 3 million followers as well. Swift's appearance with the Kelce brothers on "New Heights," was initially teased on Monday, Aug. 11, with a promo announcing Swift's new album. The "New Heights" podcast moved up to No. 1 on the Apple podcast charts before the episode became available. Swift, in a subsequent clip released in the lead-up to the episode's debut, also poked fun at "male sports fans" for showing up on the Kelces' podcast given the reception she has received at times for her appearances at Chiefs games. "I think we all know that if there's one thing that male sports fans want to see in their spaces and on their screens, it's more of me," Swift joked. Swift and Travis Kelce have been dating for the past two years and the couple remain a pop culture fascination ahead of the 2025 NFL season. Kelce's celebrity and the podcast he co-hosts with his brother has, in turn, skyrocketed in popularity. "New Heights" is reportedly worth $100 million after being licensed by Wonderly last year. Kelce admitted in a recent GQ cover story that his forays into Hollywood and entertainment might have played a role in why his production "slipped" the past two seasons. He had a cameo role in "Happy Gilmore 2" and one season as host of Amazon Prime Video's game show, "Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?" Swift, Kelce said, is more aligned with his goal of a bounce back year and another Super Bowl title with the Chiefs. Jason Kelce even introduced Swift to the "New Heights" audience as having won one Super Bowl alongside his younger brother. "I sort of made her a football fan," Travis Kelce told GQ. "She is the most engulfed fan now. She knows what the injury reports look like. She understands what special situations are, third and short – all these things because she just naturally loves to hear about my job."
