SC issues contempt notice over scurrilous allegations against Telangana HC judge

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued contempt notices to a litigant and his lawyers for making 'scurrilous allegations" against a sitting judge of the Telangana High Court in their plea. The top court, while issuing the show cause notices to the petitioner and his lawyers, refused to allow withdrawal of the petition, and said, 'We cannot permit judges to be out in a box and allow any litigant to make such allegations against a judge. Here we were trying to protect lawyers." A bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran was hearing a transfer plea filed by petitioner N Peddi Raju filed through advocate-on-record Ritesh Patil. The petition involved a case in which Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had received relief from a high court in a matter under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. 'Here we were trying to protect lawyers, but this kind of conduct cannot be condoned," the bench, which earlier heard another suo motu case pertaining to summoning of lawyers by the ED for rendering legal advice, said. 'Scurrilous allegations have been made against the sitting judge of Telangana High Court. It has been held (in a judgement) that it is not only a litigant but also a lawyer who signs (the petition) is guilty of contempt of court. 'We thus issue notice to Peddi Raju as well as the lawyers … and the AoR. They are directed to state why contempt should not be initiated against them. Notice returnable on August 11," the CJI said. A counsel sought the liberty to withdraw the remarks after the court expressed strong displeasure. However, the bench dismissed the request. 'File apology …we will see whether to consider or not. We will see the apology is genuine or not. When we expressed displeasure at the language, liberty was sought to withdraw. We dismissed the request," the bench said. The case stems from the Telangana High Court's decision to quash a criminal case registered against the chief minister under the SC/ST Act. The petitioner later approached the top court with a transfer plea, alleging bias and impropriety on the part of the high court judge. Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra appeared on behalf of the chief minister. ‘Paramilitary Officer Identified Pahalgam Attackers, Shot Them': Exclusive From Defence Sources

Last Updated: Op Mahadev In Dachigam: 'This operation was done by paramilitary officers. One para officer and his buddy identified them, after which they were shot,' said top defence sources The operation to kill three Pahalgam attackers in an encounter in Srinagar's Dachigam on Monday was carried out elite paramilitary officers, said defence sources. 'This operation was done by paramilitary officers. One para officer and his buddy identified them, after which they were shot immediately," said sources. One M4 carbine rifle, two AK rifles and other munitions were recovered from the site of the encounter. What home minister Amit Shah said Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that Suleiman Shah alias Hashim Musa, and two others killed in the Dachigam encounter were involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The two other terrorists killed in the action were identified as Jibran, who was allegedly involved in the Sonamarg tunnel attack last year, and Hamza Afghani, it was known on Monday. 'I would like to share details about ' Operation Mahadev ', which took place yesterday. In this operation, three terrorists, Suleiman, Jibran, and one other, Afghani, were neutralised in a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Jammu Police," Amit Shah told the Lok Sabha. 'Suleiman was a terrorist affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and all three were classified as A-grade terrorists," he added. How the terrorists were tracked A Huawei satellite phone was reportedly used by the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack, but the device had not been used since the attack. However, intelligence agencies tracking the phone observed that a call was made using the device two days ago. Subsequently, the location of the device was found to be deep inside Dachigam, with no human habitation around it. Following the encounter in Srinagar's Dachigam, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday said kinetic operations have been going on for the past several months in the region to eliminate terrorists. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Maha-Yatri', 'Maha-Go': Maharashtra Mulls Names For State App For Rickshaw, Taxi, E-Bike Services

Maharashtra Transport Minister criticised existing private aggregators for exploiting drivers and passengers alike, and said the state's app would address these issues head-on. In a bold move aimed at creating employment opportunities for local youth and challenging the dominance of private ride-hailing platforms, the Maharashtra government is all set to launch its own app-based transport service. This state-backed platform will include autorickshaws, taxis, and e-bikes, and is expected to go live soon after approval from the top leadership. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the government, in collaboration with the transport department, is developing the app under proposed names like 'Jai Maharashtra', 'Maha-Ride', 'Maha-Yatri' or 'Maha-Go'. He stressed that this initiative would no longer restrict the ride-hailing ecosystem to private players and would offer a transparent, fair, and reliable alternative. 'The final go-ahead will come from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar," Sarnaik said confidently. The app is being developed with technical input from the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and MITRA, alongside consultations with private firms. Designed to bring transparency and efficiency, it will be backed by strong government infrastructure and manpower—giving it an edge over existing operators. Sarnaik highlighted that this app will follow the Central Aggregator Guidelines, with its policy framework in the final stage. He criticised existing private aggregators for exploiting drivers and passengers alike, and said the state's app would address these issues head-on. 'We have the technology, resources, and manpower to make this work in the public interest," he added. A decisive meeting is scheduled for August 5 at Mantralaya, where Darekar, government officials, and technical teams will finalise the app's structure and operational plan. 'This initiative will not only make thousands of youth self-reliant but also end the monopoly of private aggregators. It's time for Maharashtra to have a people-centric ride-hailing solution," Sarnaik said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
