'Maha-Yatri', 'Maha-Go': Maharashtra Mulls Names For State App For Rickshaw, Taxi, E-Bike Services

Maharashtra Transport Minister criticised existing private aggregators for exploiting drivers and passengers alike, and said the state's app would address these issues head-on.
In a bold move aimed at creating employment opportunities for local youth and challenging the dominance of private ride-hailing platforms, the Maharashtra government is all set to launch its own app-based transport service. This state-backed platform will include autorickshaws, taxis, and e-bikes, and is expected to go live soon after approval from the top leadership.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the government, in collaboration with the transport department, is developing the app under proposed names like 'Jai Maharashtra', 'Maha-Ride', 'Maha-Yatri' or 'Maha-Go'. He stressed that this initiative would no longer restrict the ride-hailing ecosystem to private players and would offer a transparent, fair, and reliable alternative. 'The final go-ahead will come from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar," Sarnaik said confidently.
The app is being developed with technical input from the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and MITRA, alongside consultations with private firms. Designed to bring transparency and efficiency, it will be backed by strong government infrastructure and manpower—giving it an edge over existing operators.
Sarnaik highlighted that this app will follow the Central Aggregator Guidelines, with its policy framework in the final stage. He criticised existing private aggregators for exploiting drivers and passengers alike, and said the state's app would address these issues head-on. 'We have the technology, resources, and manpower to make this work in the public interest," he added.
A decisive meeting is scheduled for August 5 at Mantralaya, where Darekar, government officials, and technical teams will finalise the app's structure and operational plan. 'This initiative will not only make thousands of youth self-reliant but also end the monopoly of private aggregators. It's time for Maharashtra to have a people-centric ride-hailing solution," Sarnaik said.

Karnataka HC cracks whip, trade unions suspend strike till Aug 7

Bengaluru, Aug 5 (PTI) The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday came down heavily on the transport strike despite its interim order and warned of contempt proceedings, following which the KSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation announced suspension of the agitation till August 7, when the matter will be heard next. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C M Joshi expressed strong displeasure over the strike being carried out despite the invocation of the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) and the court's direction not to proceed with the agitation. The bench warned that the continuation of the strike would not be tolerated and would initiate contempt proceedings against the union leaders. The court extended its earlier interim order restraining the strike by two more days and directed the unions to submit an affidavit on Wednesday confirming that the strike has been called off. KSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation president H V Anantha Subbarao told reporters in Bengaluru that the agitation had been suspended till August 7 and employees had been instructed to return to work with immediate effect. During the hearing, the Advocate General informed the court that the strike had caused significant hardship to the public. In response to a query from the bench regarding efforts at conciliation, details of past rounds of talks with the government were submitted. The court observed that if there are issues then they should be resolved through talks with the government. It also noted that resorting to a strike even after ESMA had been enforced was unlawful. The court also issued notices to the unions of all four state transport corporations. The counsel for the Joint Action Committee assured the court that the strike would not continue on Wednesday. The court made it clear that if the strike is resumed, the government is free to take appropriate legal action under ESMA. Himachal govt to set up TIPC to attract big-ticket investments

Shimla, Aug 5 (PTI) The Himachal Pradesh government will set up Tourism Investment Promotion Council (TIPC), a single-window mechanism for fast-tracking project approvals and providing comprehensive investor facilitation to boost private investment in the sector, an official release said on Tuesday. The tourism council will serve as a dedicated platform to evaluate and approve tourism projects with an investment of Rs 50 crore and above. It will be chaired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and supported by an Investment Promotion Cell within the state Department of Tourism. The Council will be governed by the principles of minimum regulation, maximum facilitation, and time-bound decision-making. The initiative will help in creating a proactive system wherein the onus of project preparedness will rest with the state government, thereby significantly reducing entry barriers for prospective investors in the state, the statement said. Furthermore, except in cases involving statutory approvals (under Section 118 or environmental clearances), projects will be deemed approved if not cleared within the stipulated time frame. 'Tourism is a vital economic driver for Himachal Pradesh, contributing significantly to employment generation, income creation and balanced regional development. However, fragmented governance, slow approvals, and inadequate investor facilitation have hampered sectoral growth," a government spokesperson said. 'The state government has launched TIPC as a strategic, policy-aligned body to attract, assess and enable tourism investments in a streamlined and transparent manner," the spokesman added. The state-level apex body will convene monthly meetings to examine and approve investment proposals in a time-bound manner.
