The story follows Mahnaz (Parinaz Izadyar), a 40-year-old widowed nurse who is about to re-marry; she is also struggling with her rebellious son, Aliyar (Sinan Mohebi), who has been suspended from school. Family tensions reach a peak during a betrothal ceremony with her intended Hamid (Payman Maadi), and a tragic accident occurs. In the aftermath, Mahnaz will be forced to confront betrayal and loss, and to embark on a quest for justice.
Roustaee has previously said that Mahnaz's character 'screamed in his mind' and told the festival, 'The film tells the story of a woman fighting all the men who made her live in a patriarchal society that deprived her of all her rights, including that of a mother.'
Roustaee, who also wrote the screenplay for Woman and Child, was last in the Cannes Film Festival Competition with Leila's Brothers in 2022.
That film resulted in a six-month prison sentence and a five-year filming ban for Roustaee as imposed by the Islamic regime. The star of that movie, Taraneh Alidoosti, was sentenced to five years in prison after publishing a photo of herself without her hijab. In both cases, the sentences were eventually lifted.
According to the Cannes festival, for Woman and Child, Roustaee complied with certain restrictions, but maintains that he has not made a propaganda film, rather a film about social resistance.
Woman and Child is released in France via Diaphana; sales are with Goodfellas.

Dakota Johnson and mom Melanie Griffith share the love during rare red carpet outing
Mother-daughter duo Melanie Griffith and Dakota Johnson had a rare flashy night out for a Hollywood event. Griffith, 68, supported her firstborn daughter at the premiere of Johnson's newest film, "Splitsville," at The Grove in Los Angeles on Aug. 19. The two took a few moments to pose on the red – well, beige – carpet together, sharing an embrace, clasping hands and admiring each other's outfits (Johnson was in Gucci). Johnson, 35, is the daughter of "Working Girl" actress Griffith and "Miami Vice" star Don Johnson. Johnson, who has a producer credit on "Splitsville," also took photos with costars Adria Arjona, Nicholas Braun, Michael Angelo Covino (also the director and co-writer), and actor/writer Kyle Marvin. The comedy, which follows an open marriage that goes awry, debuted in May at the Cannes Film Festival and opens in theaters nationwide on Sept. 5. Though it's rare for the mother and daughter to show up together at high-profile events, Griffith has shown herself to be an ardent supporter of her daughter's career. At an early press screening of "The Materialists" that USA TODAY attended in May, Johnson told the crowd in the intimate West Hollywood screening room that, though she was under the weather and unable to stick around for the entire event, her mother and her older brother, Jesse Johnson, were staying to watch the Celine Song film. A segment of Johnson's career where Griffith's support wavered, however, was the "Fifty Shades" franchise that made Johnson a box office star. "I don't think I can watch R-rated Fifty Shades of Grey," Griffith said in a live interview on the red carpet for the 2015 Academy Awards, adding: "I think it will be strange." The clip went viral as Johnson looked offended while standing next to her mother. "No, I don't think so; I think it's fine," Johnson said. "I think that one day you can see it." In a 2014 sit-down with Mario Lopez for Extra TV, Griffith said, "I'm never going to see the movie myself. I don't think Don will ever see the movie. It will just be too awkward." But by 2016, Griffith revealed she'd taken a peek at "Fifty Shades," telling E! News that she'd seen "a little bit" of the film. "I just can't quite bring myself to watch the love scenes," she said.

Austin Butler Battles A Bee To Protect Zoë Kravitz
Austin Butler is making waves, again. It's not because everyone's thirsting over those new Men's Health photos. And it's not because he got too stoned from an edible and awkwardly danced on stage with Bad Bunny. Austin's literally making waves because he protected his Caught Stealing co-star Zoë Kravitz from a potential bee sting. On Tuesday, at the UK premiere of the new Darren Aronofsky crime thriller, Austin and Zoë walked the carpet in complementary Saint Laurent outfits, and they looked very sweet — perhaps, too sweet. When a rogue bee tried to pollinate the actors as they posed for photos, Zoë and Austin attempted to wave the insect away from her face before it set its sights on the Dune 2 actor. Austin, Zoë, and Darren were visibly amused by the bee, who I'm convinced is Barry B. Benson from 2007's Bee Movie trying to make a comeback. The best part about this insect interaction is that it's not Austin's first rodeo with a bumblebee on a red carpet. In May, while posing for pictures during the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Eddington, Austin tried to save Emma Stone from a bee. When the bee buzzed into their space, Pedro Pascal laughed, Emma dodged, and Austin unsuccessfully tried to blow the bee away. Fortunately, Austin has improved his technique since the last time. Austin revealed what went down during a Tuesday, Aug. 12 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "Some things just happen, and you don't really realize what's happening in the moment," Austin explained. "[Emma] said, 'Bee, bee, bee!' And then I look, and there's actually a bumblebee that's attacking..." he told Jimmy. "And then Pedro starts laughing, and then I started blowing the bee away. That was my reaction." Austin admitted that he "didn't want to hurt the bee," and that's why the video might appear a little suspect. "It kind of looks like I'm blowing the bee at her. You know? So I was doing my best to try to get the bee to just playfully get away." In Caught Stealing, Austin plays Hank, a former baseball star turned bartender who gets involved in the world of 1990s New York City crime. Zoë plays Yvonne, Hank's love interest. Caught Stealing will be in theaters on Aug. 29. Do you love all things TV and movies?
