MSCS interim superintendent releases 100-day plan

Yahoo30-04-2025

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Shelby County Schools' interim superintendent, Dr. Roderick Richmond, released his 100-day plan during a board meeting on Tuesday night.
The plan focuses on governance and board relations, student achievement, staff relations and capacity, operations and finance, community relations, evaluation, and accountability.
Dr. Richmond says it all comes down to more immediate priorities and that his first 100-day plan will go into effect on May 1.
Who is MSCS Interim Superintendent Roderick Richmond?
He took questions from the board when they asked why this process took so long. He says one of the first items he had to complete as interim superintendent was completing outstanding contracts and working on an organizational chart.
When it comes to the actual plan, it centers around 'five A's'. Each 'A' stands for academics, attendance, attitude, athletics, and arts. In each category, he presented goals and metrics that they hope to complete within different deadlines.
School board members applauded him for the detailed and comprehensive plan, but wanted to get to the meat of it, asking what exactly he plans to do differently this time around.
Dr. Richmond says a complete academic plan hasn't existed in the last seven years and that he consulted with outside firms to see what changes need to be made so that the work aligns with the academic plan.

A major sticking point was also the use of 'feeder patterns', something he says will connect classrooms from elementary to high school to career development.
He used an example out of Southwest Memphis, sharing the proximity of the local schools to the Southwest Career and Technology Center and eventually to Elon Musk's xAI supercomputer.
'What if we start teaching coding, start teaching STEM, and that particular feeder pattern, when you look at our CTE center, students can go to that center and start to look at some of the careers around STEM,' Dr. Richmond said. 'In working in partnership, hypothetically, again with xAI, we can turn that whole community around.'
Some board members voiced their concerns with the feeder program, like Tamarquez Porter, who says this could limit parents' choice when it comes to schools.
But Dr. Richmond says it is just breaking the district down into smaller sections to tailor support and focus on the individual communities.

Chief AI Scientist At Mark Zuckerberg's Meta Says 'No Way' Scaling ChatGPT-Like Models Is Going To Lead To Human-Level AI

Meta Platforms, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:META) chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, says the tech industry won't close the gap to human-level intelligence by scaling today's large language models and piling on more parameters. What Happened: "We are not going to get to human-level AI by just scaling up LLMs. This is just not going to happen. There's no way — absolutely no way," LeCun told host Alex Kantrowitz on the Big Technology podcast in March. He dismissed bullish two-year timelines from "more adventurous colleagues" as "complete BS." Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — In a clip of the podcast which was resurfaced on YouTube last week, LeCun likened current chatbots to "a system with a gigantic memory and retrieval ability, not a system that can invent solutions to new problems," adding that even if the models can answer most routine questions, "it's not a Ph.D. you have next to you." Instead of reasoning, he said, today's systems "pattern-match" the next word. LeCun contends the best path forward is collaborative. According to a report by Business Insider, at the AI Action Summit in Paris, which took place in February, he urged governments to contribute anonymized data to a larger open-source It Matters: LeCun has long doubted that OpenAI will win the race to artificial general intelligence (AGI), a stance he first voiced in December 2023. Last week, he pointed Elon Musk toward a new FAIR study on "Contextual Positional Encoding," telling the xAI founder it could boost Grok and then amplified the paper by sharing Meta researcher Jason Weston's explanatory thread on X. The exchange unfolded amid LeCun's running feud with Musk. After Musk posted xAI job openings on Monday, LeCun quipped that applicants should expect a boss who insists their project "will be solved next year." He later applauded Musk's engineering triumphs in cars, rockets, and satellites while slamming the billionaire's politics, conspiracy theories, and habitual hype. AI Insider Blows the Lid Off Musk's Secret AI Operation

BALTIMORE, June 06, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A mysterious AI complex in Memphis is now being called the most powerful system of its kind — and it wasn't supposed to be public knowledge. In a newly released briefing, bestselling author and tech expert James Altucher reveals the details of a covert AI operation led by Elon Musk that, until now, has gone almost entirely unreported. Known as Project Colossus, the facility was built by Musk's AI company, xAI, and is allegedly housing the highest-density AI computing power in the Western Hemisphere. 'The AI Mothership' Altucher says the project has quietly surpassed every major tech firm in the race for AI dominance — including OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, and even Nvidia. 'Elon Musk has created the AI mothership… an innovation of such enormous proportion… that he has already surpassed all the leading AI developers.' He adds that the complex is powered by 200,000 high-performance AI chips — and growing. 'Making it the most advanced AI facility known to man.' Buried in a Warehouse. Unleashed by Policy. According to Altucher, the project only became possible after a specific presidential action early in Trump's second term. 'In one of his FIRST acts as President… Donald Trump overturned Executive Order #14110.' That order had previously restricted advanced AI development in the name of safety and oversight. Its removal, Altucher says, opened the floodgates. Not a Tool. A Turning Point. Altucher warns that this isn't just about AI doing tasks faster. This is a leap into self-operating systems that think, react, and solve. 'AI 2.0… gives that knowledge to intelligent machines that I believe will solve our problems for us.' He claims a major update to Colossus — scheduled before July 1 — could mark the moment America enters a new technological era. About James Altucher James Altucher is a computer scientist, entrepreneur, and bestselling author with four decades of experience in artificial intelligence and innovation. His past work includes contributions to IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer and the early development of AI-driven market systems. His recent briefings focus on the intersection of AI, secrecy, and national acceleration. TNB Tech Minute: Musk, Trump, and Tesla Investors Take a Pause After Public Feud - Tech News Briefing

Victoria Craig: Here's your TNB Tech minute for Friday, June 6th. I'm Victoria Craig for the Wall Street Journal. Tesla investors have put aside for now the very public falling out between President Trump and Elon Musk. The electric vehicle maker's shares rose 3.6% today on Wall Street after plunging 14% in the prior session. The dispute between the president and the tech billionaire could raise questions though over the five-billion-dollar debt sale for Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI. The sale launched this week and is scheduled to close later this month. Earlier this year, there was overwhelming demand for debt backed by X, due to the then-budding alliance between Musk and Trump. Meanwhile, President Trump is planning to extend for a third time enforcement of a law banning or forcing the sale of TikTok, people familiar with the matter told the journal. The White House did not respond to a request for comment. The extension comes as trade tensions between the US and China continue. People familiar said a day after the President enacted far-reaching tariffs, representatives from TikTok parent company, ByteDance told the White House a deal for a takeover wouldn't be approved by Beijing until there were negotiations over trade and tariffs. President Trump this afternoon posted on Truth Social that the US treasury and commerce secretaries will accompany the US trade representative to London on Monday for a meeting with China on trade. And finally a day after crypto exchange Circle rocketed higher in its debut on the New York Stock Exchange, Gemini Space Station has filed to also go public. The company is one of the largest crypto exchanges in the US based on trading volume, and it's controlled by the Winklevoss twins, billionaire brothers known for their early involvement in Facebook. The company hasn't yet determined how many shares it will offer or in what range it intends to price. For a deeper dive into what's happening in tech, check out Monday's Tech News Briefing podcast.
