What to know about the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in 2025
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will visit Folsom Field Aug. 29 for the first time in the program's 133-year history. The home-and-home matchup was announced in 2016 with both programs hoping to rekindle their 1990 national championship split.
Both programs have experienced numerous ebbs and flows since their glory days, but without a doubt, Georgia Tech is a formidable opponent to face in week one.
Here's a look at Georgia Tech as the 2025 season opener draws closer.
2024 in review
Most college football fans will remember Georgia Tech's 2024 season as a drama-filled one. The Yellow Jackets opened the year with a win over Florida State in Dublin, Ireland. Georgia Tech's biggest win of the year came against then-No. 4 Miami Hurricanes in November. Perhaps the most notable game of the college football season was Georgia Tech's eight-overtime battle against Georgia that eventually saw the Yellow Jackets fall to the Bulldogs.
The Yellow Jackets finished the year with a 7-6 record and lost to Vanderbilt in the Birmingham Bowl, 35-24.
Head coach profile
Brent Key enters his third season as Georgia Tech's head coach after he spent the 2022 season with the interim tag. Key has been with the Yellow Jackets since 2019. He has elevated Georgia Tech from 3-9 in 2021 to back-to-back bowl appearances the past two seasons. His team plays a disciplined, physical brand of football and continues to ascend.
Top offensive players
The Yellow Jackets have three-star offensive players who Colorado should know. Haynes King is first up. The dual-threat quarterback threw for 2,114 yards and 14 touchdowns last season to go along with 587 yards and 11 scores on the ground. King completed 73% of his passes and only threw two interceptions. His legs can be a back breaker for defenses, and King is a master at moving the chains. He seems poised for even bigger production in 2025.
Georgia Tech's other Haynes, running back Jamal Haynes, is arguably a top-five running back in the country. He is coming off a season in which he rushed for 944 yards and nine touchdowns, while also catching 28 passes for 166 yards. The Haynes to Haynes connection will be one to watch for in Week 1.
Top defensive player
Efford is Georgia Tech's do-it-all middle linebacker and one of college football's best tacklers. In 2024, he racked up 64 total tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and one pass breakup. Efford will lead a new look defense under new defensive coordinator Blake Gideon, who comes over from Texas.
2025 schedule
Way-too-early Colorado matchup preview
The Yellow Jackets open the year in Boulder against a retooled Colorado Buffaloes squad. No Shedeur Sanders and no Travis Hunter means several new faces will have to step up. The new programs have never faced each other, but share a significant piece of college football history as both schools were named 1990 National Champions.
On the field, Colorado will need to slow down Haynes King and Jamal Haynes. Offensively, the Buffs should be able to move the ball against a Yellow Jackets defense that is playing its first game together.

ESPN's Seth Walder predicts Broncos will bench Bo Nix in 2027
The hits keep coming for Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. In an ESPN article detailing future power rankings for NFL teams, the Broncos came in at No. 7, just behind the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. "The Broncos look like they have a solid starting quarterback in Bo Nix and have arguably the NFL's best offensive line and best defense, led by star cornerback Pat Surtain II. What a turnaround for coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton," wrote Ben Solak, who discussed Denver's reasons for hope. The Broncos' area of concern, with valid reason, is their running back situation. "Do the running backs have the ability to provide the physical, rugged presence that is needed in December and January, when the run game becomes a focus," asked Louis Riddick. "The combination of J.K. Dobbins, RJ Harvey and Audric Estime has to improve on the Broncos' 1.63 yards after first contact per rush (25th in 2024). If this group gets going, Denver can challenge Kansas City for the AFC West title." Denver's strength has been the offensive line. "Denver's offensive line ranked No. 1 in both pass block win rate (73.8%) and run block win rate (74.9%) last season, but it's a bit older than most other lines, ranging in age from guard Quinn Meinerz (27) to tackle Garett Bolles (33)," wrote Aaron Schatz. Despite all the praise, the boldest prediction related to quarterback Bo Nix. "Nix will lose his starting job during the 2027 season, which will be his last as a Bronco," ESPN's Seth Walder wrote. "There's optimism around him now, but there's reason to be skeptical in the long term. As a rookie, his rushing led him to be decent efficiency-wise. But he ranked 28th in completion percentage over expectation (minus-2.4%) and 22nd in yards per dropback (6.16) despite playing behind a top-tier offensive line. The roster around him is great now, but it won't always be." In his first season, Nix threw for more yards and more touchdowns than 2024 NFL MVP Josh Allen, leading the Broncos to their first postseason appearance in nearly a decade. It will remain to be seen how Nix performs in the coming seasons, but with his trajectory, it's hard to imagine Walder being accurate in his assessment. Time will tell, indeed. Sean Payton reacts to ESPN's prediction that Broncos will bench Bo Nix in 2027
In ESPN's recent power rankings predicting the NFL's future, Seth Walder made a bold prediction that quarterback Bo Nix would lose his starting job with the Denver Broncos in 2027. After the Broncos' joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, coach Sean Payton was asked for his initial thoughts on Walder's bold prediction. "I didn't see that," Payton said. "My initial thoughts are like, 2027 seems like an eternity from now, you know? And so, I think that's one of the challenges maybe with the media landscape -- that, you know, it's gonna draw clicks and everything. But I can't worry about Nick from ESPN, and I can't worry about 2027, but I can focus on this year. But let's find him in 2027 and see where we're at." Nix was named a Pro Bowl alternate last season after surpassing 4,200 yards from scrimmage and scoring 34 touchdowns as a rookie. We'll see how Walder's prediction holds up two years from now. Deion Sanders, Colorado Dealt Concerning Recruiting Prediction
Deion Sanders, Colorado Dealt Concerning Recruiting Prediction originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When it comes to the 2026 recruiting class, the Colorado Buffaloes and Deion Sanders have struggled. So far, only landing 11 commitments, ranking No. 15 in the Big 12 and No. 65 in the nation. Their luck could soon change, with Rivals' Steve Wiltfong reporting that the Buffaloes, along with the Michigan Wolverines, the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Maryland Terrapins are the four finalists for athlete CJ Sadler. It's a high-powered battle, with Rivals Industry Rankings placing Sadler as a four-star recruit, the No. 6 athlete, the No. 1 player in Michigan and the No. 123 player in the nation. Working at both wide receiver and cornerback in 2024 for Cass Tech High School, he was solid, accumulating 51 receptions, 828 yards, nine touchdowns, 46 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one interception. Sadler Predicted to Pass on Colorado Unfortunately for Sanders and the Buffaloes, their chances of coming out on top are weak, with Rivals' Greg Smith logging an expert prediction for Sadler to choose North Carolina and head coach Bill Belichick. "With me with Coach Belichick, I had to just sit down and actually take it all in because it's Coach Belichick we're talking about,' Sadler said, according to Smith. "He coached Tom Brady and he's one of the greatest coaches ever in NFL history. Talking to him and soaking up game and talking football with him was great for sure.' For the Tar Heels, this would be a big addition to their 2026 recruiting class, which already features 35 commitments, ranking No. 4 in the ACC and No. 20 in the nation. Colorado Shouldn't Give Up on Sadler However, the Buffaloes shouldn't completely lose hope on this battle, because the athlete has previously given some major praise to the way Sanders runs the program. 'They have a great coaching staff. Coach Prime he just love the kids, love the players, he all about them," Sadler previously told Wiltfong. "That's very exciting and one thing to look at.' With a decision coming Friday, Colorado has only a few days left to turn things story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 12, 2025, where it first appeared.
