And When the Bullets Stopped, Bulls Ran Free
India's equity benchmarks jumped nearly 4% on Monday, posting their biggest single-day gain in four years, buoyed by stoppage of hostilities with Pakistan and a truce in the US-China tariff war. The thaw in frosty relations between the world's largest economies revived risk-on sentiment, sending safe-haven assets such as gold tumbling.

jumped 2,975 points, or 3.7%, to close at 82,429.9. The NSE Nifty surged 916.7 points, or 3.8%, ending over 24,924. Both indices closed at their highest levels for the year, aided by the sharpest run-up in a day since February 2021.
The rally boosted the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies by ₹16.9 lakh crore.

Easing of hostilities on both fronts came as a significant reprieve for investors who have been on edge due to uncertainties over the outcome of geopolitical and economic conflicts in the past few weeks. While all Asian markets rallied after the US and China agreed to a 90-day pause on tariffs and slashed levies, Indian bourses got an extra fillip from the halt in fighting with Pakistan, forcing traders to liquidate bearish bets made late last week amid heightened tensions between the neighbours.
Pakistan's main share index soared 9% on Monday. 'Today's (Monday's) market rally is a confluence of positive global and domestic developments — from easing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, to progress on US-China trade talks,' said Taher Badshah, chief investment officer at Invesco Mutual Fund.
Live Events
The Volatility Index (VIX), the market's fear measure, plunged 15% to 18.4, in line with the equities rebound, indicating options traders see lower risks in the near term. Last week, this index had surged over 16% as the Sensex and Nifty declined 1.3% on fears of a full-blown conflict with the neighbouring nation.
The broader market also ended strong, with the Nifty Midcap 150 jumping 3.75% and the Nifty Small-Cap 250 gaining 4%. Of the 4,254 stocks traded on the BSE, 3,545 advanced, while 576 declined.
The bullish momentum may push the markets higher in the days ahead, but fund managers do not rule out intermittent sell-offs. 'The market could see small doses of correction over the next few days after this massive rally,' said Badshah. 'But what has changed now is that it's now more of a buy-on-dips market, rather than a sell-on-rise market.'
The Sensex and Nifty are up nearly 13% since April 7, when the recent rebound started after Trump halted tariffs on imports from most countries, barring China, for 90 days.
Gold, one of the best performers in recent times because of its safe-haven status, slumped nearly 3% on Monday in response to the pause in the US-China tariff conflict. 'For investors, our view is that a clear framework of disciplined asset allocation matters more than reacting to noise,' said Neelesh Surana, chief investment officer at Mirae Asset Investment Managers.
All sectoral indices in India ended in the green, with metals, realty, power, IT, and energy stocks leading the charge, rising between 4% and 6%.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained net buyers, purchasing shares worth Rs 1,246.5 crore on Monday. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also contributed to the rally, investing Rs 1,448.4 crore during the day.

More money on the Street draws bulls to realty, auto, financials
Following the RBI's policy rate cut and CRR reduction, interest rate-sensitive sectors like banks, financials, property, and autos experienced a surge, propelling the Nifty past 25,000. The Nifty Bank index reached a new high, while realty and financial services also saw significant gains. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Interest rate-sensitive sectors, such as banks, financials, property and automotives, surged after Friday's twin policy announcements on funding costs and liquidity enhancement , pushing the benchmark Nifty higher by more than 1% past the 25,000 Nifty Bank index made a fresh high of 56,695 level on Friday, ending 1.5% higher. Nifty's Realty index was up 4.7% at close, the Financial Services index advanced 1.75%, and the Auto index closed 1.5% higher. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) slashed the policy rate by half a percentage point - the most since March 2020 - and reduced the cash reserve ratio (CRR) to the Covid-era record low."The market has responded appropriately to the RBI's repo rate and CRR cuts, which could translate into longer-term gains if consumption also picks up," said Amit Khurana, head of equities at Dolat Capital Market. "Rate-sensitive sectors are gaining momentum, driven by short covering, but sustained growth depends on increased cash market participation."The Nifty Bank and Financial Services indices are also seeing a change in trend on the technical charts."Bank Nifty witnessed a bullish breakout from a seven-week consolidation phase on Friday, marking fresh all-time highs. Finnifty has also seen a similar breakthrough," said Vipin Kumar, assistant vice president of derivatives and technical research at Globe Capital said Bank Nifty is poised to move towards the 57,500-57,800 range in the near term, with key support around 55,400. This implies about a 2.1% upside in the index from current levels.A rate cut usually translates into lower lending rates for the banks, prompting citizens to borrow more at cheaper rates, either for investing or buying new assets like homes or vehicles. Due to the cut in CRR rates, NBFCs will also get easier access to bank funds, which may increase their lending said from a longer-term perspective, some of these sectors may be attractive to investors."Valuations for banks remain modest, with NBFCs favoured due to the CRR cut. Real estate may also benefit from improved sentiment, though auto demand remains weak and is unlikely to be significantly impacted by these measures," he the shorter term, Kumar said that the auto index has formed a fresh buying pivot with renewed buying interest and he will reassess the index near the 24,150 level."In the real estate sector, we recommend buying the index heavyweight DLF on dips, while other stocks within the space can be considered at current levels," he said.

AI Startup Experts Warn Of 'Terrible Decade' Ahead As White-Collar Job Losses Loom
Researchers at artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic have warned that humanity was in for a 'terrible decade' ahead as the technology continues to replace workers through automation. Anthropic's Sholto Douglas said even if current AI progress stalls, there would be a big drop in a number of white-collar workers over the next few years "There is this whole spectrum of crazy futures. But the one that I feel we're almost guaranteed to get, this is a strong statement to make, is one where, at the very least, you get a drop in white-collar workers at some point in the next five years," Mr Doughlas said, speaking to AI podcaster Dwarkesh Patel.. "I think it's very likely in two, but it seems almost overdetermined in five. The current suite of algorithms is sufficient to automate white-collar work provided you have enough of the right kinds of data." Mr Douglas said this scenario could lead to a "pretty terrible decade" before things start to improve for the better. Trenton Bricken, a member of the technical staff at Anthropic, added: 'We should expect to see them automated within the next five years.' End of white-collar jobs Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has echoed a similar sentiment, stating that governments across the world were downplaying the threat when AI use could lead to a significant spike in unemployment numbers. "We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming. I don't think this is on people's radar," said Mr Amodei. According to the Anthropic boss, unemployment could increase by 10 per cent to 20 per cent over the next five years, with most of the people 'unaware' about what was coming. "Most of them are unaware that this is about to happen. It sounds crazy, and people just don't believe it," he said. The 42-year-old CEO added that AI companies and the governments needed to stop "sugarcoating" the risks of mass job elimination in fields such as technology, finance, law, and consulting. "It's a very strange set of dynamics where we're saying: 'You should be worried about where the technology we're building is going.'"
