Three new judges appointed to the Supreme Court; Oath ceremony on May 30

New Delhi, May 29 (UNI) In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India is set to regain its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges with the appointment of three new judges, including two serving chief justices of high courts.
The oath of office will be administered by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, tomorrow, May 30, at the Supreme Court premises.
The newly-appointed judges are Justice N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and Justice A.S. Chandurkar, senior judge of the Bombay High Court.
Their elevation was formally announced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
'In accordance with Article 124 of the Constitution, the President of India has appointed three distinguished judges to the Supreme Court.'
With these appointments, the Supreme Court will temporarily function at its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges (including the Chief Justice).
However, this complete bench will be short-lived, as Justice Bela M. Trivedi is scheduled to demit office upon her retirement on June 9, 2025.
Justice N.V. Anjaria: Known for his judicial acumen and administrative efficiency, he served as a judge of the Gujarat High Court before being elevated as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. His tenure has been marked by progressive rulings and a focus on reducing case pendency.
Justice Vijay Bishnoi: Originally a judge of the Rajasthan High Court, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2024. His elevation brings representation from the northeastern region and adds to the Supreme Court's regional diversity.
Justice A.S. Chandurkar: A seasoned judge from the Bombay High Court with wide-ranging experience in civil, constitutional, and administrative law, Justice Chandurkar is regarded for his clarity in judgments and deep legal scholarship.
This round of appointments is seen as significant not just for restoring numerical strength but also for their timing, coming ahead of Justice Trivedi's retirement and multiple high court transfers and pending vacancies.
The elevation of two high court chief justices signals a continuation of the practice of promoting senior high court judges who have demonstrated administrative and judicial leadership.
With 29 high court recommendations still pending with the government, judicial appointments remain a key area of focus in the coming months, both in terms of filling vacancies and ensuring representation across regions and communities.

‘If Kamal Haasan….': Pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj calls for state-wide bundh on language row

Tensions flared across Karnataka on Monday as pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj issued a stern warning of a statewide bandh in protest against Tamil actor Kamal Haasan's controversial remarks on the Kannada language. The actor is under fire for allegedly stating that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil,' a comment that has drawn strong backlash from Kannada groups and political circles alike. Also Read - Kamal Haasan faces ire of Karnataka High Court for not apologising in Kannada row: 'Are you a historian or linguist' Leading a protest in Mysuru on June 2, Nagaraj lashed out at Haasan and called his statement a direct insult to the Kannada language and its rich heritage. 'This is not just an affront to the language, but to the pride and identity of Kannadigas. We will not take it lying down,' he said. He added that thousands of Kannada activists across the state were prepared to go to jail if Haasan's upcoming film Thug Life is screened in Karnataka. Declaring that pro-Kannada organisations will unite, Nagaraj announced a call for a statewide bandh if the actor does not issue a public apology. 'We will ensure that neither Kamal Haasan nor his films are allowed within the borders of Karnataka. He must apologise to the people of this state, or face a complete boycott,' Nagaraj asserted. Urging political leaders to speak up, Nagaraj criticised the silence of elected representatives and called on MLAs, MPs, and ministers to take to the streets in defence of the language. He also appealed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to convene a special one-day session of the State Legislature to pass a resolution reaffirming the dignity and sovereignty of Kannada. However, his petition hit a roadblock after the court criticised the lack of remorse in his response. According to legal news portal Live Law, the bench remarked, 'If it is a reply of apology, we will consider it. But there is no apology in it. You may be Kamal Haasan or anybody else—you cannot hurt public sentiments.' The actor's legal counsel maintained that the statement had been misinterpreted and presented a written explanation from Haasan. Still, the court appeared unconvinced, stating clearly that the emotional sensitivity of linguistic identity cannot be dismissed lightly.

'You May Be Kamal Haasan...': Karnataka High Court On Kannada Language Row

Last Updated: The Karnataka High Court slammed Kamal Haasan over his "Kannada was born from Tamil" remark, saying it hurt public sentiment, and observing that an apology would have ended it all. The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday strongly pulled up actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan for his recent remark suggesting that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil". The court began hearing petitions seeking direction to authorities, including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, not to take any measures–to restrain or refrain from screening and releasing the actor's movie 'Thug Life', which is scheduled for release on June 5. Criticising his remark strongly, the court observed that a single apology could have resolved the situation. Justice M Nagaprasanna, who presided over the hearing, said that the statement had hurt the sentiments of the people of Karnataka and questioned Haasan's refusal to offer an apology. Here are the quotes by the Karnataka High Court bench. 'You may be Kamal Haasan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses" 'A public figure cannot make such statements. What has happened because of it is unrest, disharmony" 'On what basis have you made the statement? Are you a historian, linguist? On what basis did you speak?" 'You are seeking protection for the release of your film. An apology would have done" 'You know the importance of the film, saying it is made by (filmmaker) Mani Ratnam, but you cannot make a statement (apology)" 'For your own creation, you want police machinery to support now. Language is a sentiment attached to the people. You are not an ordinary man, you are a public figure. People writing on social media are also being investigated" 'Fundamental right of speech and expression cannot be stretched to hurt sentiments of the masses" 'You apologise, you want to earn from here" 'Due to a slip of the tongue, anything can happen. Spoken words cannot be taken back, but they can be apologised for. You cannot unscramble a scrambled egg" Kamal Haasan's remark that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil" made at the audio release of his film in Chennai in the last week of May, stoked a controversy, triggering protests in the neighbouring state. The South India Artistes' Association defended him, claiming he aimed to promote unity. First Published: June 03, 2025, 14:13 IST

UBT Sena MP Sanjay Raut supports call for special Parliament session, says party already signed draft proposal

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday supported the call for a special session of Parliament during the INDIA alliance meeting, saying that his party had already signed the draft proposal prepared for the special session demand. Speaking to ANI, Raut said, 'I was told that we are meeting today in the Constitution Club regarding a draft on the Special Session of the Parliament. Our party has already signed the draft. If the Opposition parties demand that a special session should be held, then it should be done...' The meeting will be held today at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. The meeting of opposition leaders under the INDIA alliance aimed to build consensus on demanding a special parliamentary session on major national issues. Meanwhile, reacting to Congress leader Salman Khurshid's controversial remark regarding Article 370, he said, 'You go abroad as a representative of the country, not of any party. No one can set the standard of patriotism on opposing or supporting Article 370...' Earlier on Friday, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also responded to Congress leader Salman Khurshid's comments on Article 370, acknowledging that the former External Affairs Minister had admitted the provision was a blunder. Poonawalla highlighted the positive changes in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, citing increased prosperity and people's voices being heard. Speaking to ANI, Poonawala said, 'Salman Khurshid is a senior Congress leader and has been External Affairs Minister previously and today he also accepts how 'Pakistan-Parasti, Pattharbazi and Problem of Pakistan' was increasing. Now that Article 370 has been removed, there is Prosperity and People's voice is audible... Article 370 was a blunder of the then governments and especially Nehru, this is accepted by Salman Khurshid himself... But even today, some Congress leaders back the Article 370...' Khurshid had earlier defended Congress's stand on Article 370. He said that Article 370 had created a feeling that Jammu and Kashmir was separate from the rest of India. While addressing Indonesian think tanks and academics in Jakarta, Indonesia, Khurshid stated, 'Kashmir had a major problem for a long time. Much of that was reflected in the thinking of the government in an article called 370 of the Constitution... But Article 370 was abrogated and it was finally put to an end.' Also, earlier today, all-party delegation member Salman Khurshid, said that Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir must be given back to India. Khurshid, in conversation with ANI, said that India has clearly stated that talks, including talks on the Indus Water Treaty, can happen only when Pakistan's commitment to peace is clear. 'There is a long standing unanimous resolution of parliament of India saying that the Pakistan occupied Kashmir must be re-vacated and given back to India and as you know that even in the assembly of Jammu andKashmir, the seats that should have been in that area are kept vacant just for this reason that we have we have a long term commitment that the area is to come back to us. That's one important factor,' he said. Khurshid further said that Pakistan negated attempts at making peace, as it continued to attack India over the years. 'The second is that the government has reiterated this because, you know, often questions are asked about whether you will talk or not, etc. We have expressed our distress that repeated attempts to speak and negotiate have been betrayed by Pakistan by a subsequent attack and several attacks that happened over the years,' he said. Khurshid is part of an all-party delegation led by JD-U MP Sanjay Kumar Jha. The delegation includes Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, Brij Lala (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Salman Khurshid, and Mohan Kumar. The delegation is visiting many countries as part of India's global outreach against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The delegation has visited Japan, South Korea, and Singapore so far. (ANI)
