For months, whispers of stagflation circled Wall Street like ghosts in the corridors – visible enough to spook, but never quite real enough to confront.
But last week, Fed boss Jerome Powell said the word out loud.
'Stagflation' isn't just a tail risk anymore – it's here, it's real, and the Fed is not pretending otherwise anymore.
"The Fed has just confirmed what we've been warning clients about for more than three months," said Nigel Green, CEO of financial advisory giant deVere Group.
Green said the warning lights have been flashing: slower economic growth, higher inflation and unemployment ticking upwards.
Those three ingredients, when tossed together in the economic pot, make a bitter stew called stagflation.
And this time, Powell pointed the finger squarely at trade policies, specifically, Donald Trump's barrage of tariffs.
"When you weigh rising prices against declining productivity, and then throw in trade wars, the result is a stagnating economy with no good choices.
'That's the definition of stagflation, and now the Fed is saying it, too," Green added.
The Fed's honesty is late, but welcome, Green quipped.
"Investors can't wait around for policy clarity from Washington. The time to hedge, reposition and diversify was yesterday, but the next best time is now."
Inflation-resisting assets
According to Green, Trump's temporary pause on the next wave of levies might be just that, a pause.
His track record suggests that unpredictability isn't a bug, it's a feature. And markets are starting to price that in.
What looked like a soft landing earlier this year now seems like a mirage.
So what's the plan when the world's biggest economy lurches towards stagflation?
"In this environment, traditional 60/40 portfolios are insufficient. Investors need greater exposure to inflation-resistant assets like certain commodities, real assets and defensive equities."
Bonds and gold
But while Green points out the dangers, Ed Monk from Fidelity offers a bit of a map for the minefield.
Monk acknowledged that higher prices paired with slower growth is a cruel combo.
"It's a combination that markets hate, as evidenced by the steep falls in US shares this year," he added.
For investors, Monk suggests a handful of strategies that could serve as a life raft in stagflationary waters.
Government bonds, for instance, might seem like a dry option, but when volatility shakes the stock market tree, they reassert their role as portfolio protectors.
"In theory, stagflation should present a challenge to fixed-income assets like bonds because it comes with higher inflation, which erodes the value of the income they pay over time.
'However, high-quality government bonds begin to look very attractive when returns from riskier assets, like shares, are in question," he explained.
It's a case of retreating to the castle when the storm hits, safe behind the walls of low default-risk.
Gold, that old warrior of economic turmoil, is another safe haven, Monk said.
Already brushing up against record highs, the yellow metal is proving its mettle once again.
"Gold tends to perform best when fear is at its highest, and has a track record of holding its value when other assets are vulnerable to falls.'
And when the US dollar wobbles, gold shines even brighter.
Cash and dividends
Then there's cash, often sidelined when markets are booming, but a savvy investor knows when to keep some powder dry.
"Canny investors may well be thinking about building a cash pile at the sidelines of their portfolio, and to deploy it to take advantage of further falls in stock markets," Monk advised.
In times of chaos, sometimes the smartest play is to wait, watch, and pounce when the moment's right.
Finally, there's the quiet strength of dividends.
In the tumult of stagflation, companies that reward shareholders with reliable payouts act as anchors. They're not flashy, but they're steady.
Monk pointed out that firms in stable sectors, those less dependent on consumer confidence such as utilities and staples, can still deliver in choppy waters.
So it's about shifting strategy, building in resilience, and waiting out the storm with an eye for opportunity, he said.

Porsche 963 RSP will make millionaires beg
Like toddlers all clamouring for the same toy, Porsche is expecting to be flooded with calls from billionaire car collectors from around the world after revealing its latest one-of-a-kind creation. The Porsche 963 RSP is a road-legal (although, they use that term loosely) version of the brand's prototype racing sports car that will compete at next week's Le Mans 24 Hours. It was built and named for Roger Searle Penske, the billionaire businessman and race team owner who oversees Porsche's on-track activities; as well as running successful NASCAR and IndyCar teams. The 963 RSP project was inspired by a one-off road-legal version of Porsche's iconic 917 race car that it built in 1975 for Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, the heir to the Martini & Rossi company. But whereas that car was built specifically for 'Count Rossi' this new race-car-for-the-road began as a top secret project and found its obvious owner once the multimillion-dollar project was underway. Timo Resch, President and chief executive of Porsche Cars North America, oversaw the project with the car being built both in Germany and the USA, with influence from the factory racing department and Porsche Penske Motorsport personnel. 'I think it's fair to say that we started this without having one specific person in mind,' Resch admitted. 'But at the very, very early stage … when we started figuring out 'can this be done or are we taking too much on ourselves?' And in this conversation with Roger, at the very early stage, we realised that the customer can only be Roger. So that was kind of very early on where we realised he would be the perfect customer, number one, and also the only customer for such a car because it's a one-off. 'Who knows what the future brings. But this particular car is a one-off.' That open-ended answer will no doubt have other car collectors from around the world calling Porsche asking for their own custom-made road-legal race car. No price was put on the 963 RSP, which required a lot of specialised work to make it suitable for the road, but Porsche reportedly sells the racing versions of the 963 to race teams for US$2.9 million (approx. $4.4m). Angus Fitton, vice president of public relations for Porsche North America, said the company had already started receiving calls, as soon as a shadowy teaser image was revealed in April. ' We have received questions, yes, I can tell that I know that Urs [Kuratle, Director of Factor Racing Porsche Motorsport] and JD [Jonathan Diuguid, Managing Director Porsche Penske Motorsport] have had [questions too],' Fitton said. 'Whether that translates into anything more serious, that'll need to wait for another day,' 'But certainly people are asking the questions of us, because inevitably you look at the teaser and look at some of the speculation and press [and people say] 'Hey, you guys working on something?' and that conversation. It'll be interesting to see what comes out after June 6th, when this is revealed, what the feedback is. 'But no, there is no harm in asking. We'll always listen and as Urs said earlier, you know, never say never, but for now, this is a one-of-one this car.' Key technical changes for the 963 RSP compared to the racing version include new bodywork that encloses the wheels (and is painted silver to match the Count Rossi 917), higher and softer suspension, wet weather tyres and a detuned twin-turbo V8 engine and hybrid system to make it more manageable at road speeds. The 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans will be held in France on June 14-15. Australia's Matt Campbell will be competing for outright victory with Porsche Penske Motorsport in a racing version of the 963.

Trump threatens Musk with 'serious consequences' in spending bill row
US President Donald Trump threatened his former advisor Elon Musk with "serious consequences" Saturday if the tech billionaire seeks to punish Republicans who vote for a controversial spending bill. The comments by Trump to NBC News come after the relationship between the world's most powerful person and the world's richest imploded in bitter and spectacular fashion this week. The blistering break-up -- largely carried out on social media before a riveted public on Thursday -- was ignited by Musk's harsh criticism of Trump's so-called "big, beautiful" spending bill, which is currently before Congress. Some lawmakers who were against the bill had called on Musk -- one of the Republican Party's biggest financial backers in last year's presidential election -- to fund primary challenges against Republicans who voted for the legislation. "He'll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that," Trump, who also branded Musk "disrespectful," told NBC News on Saturday, without specifying what those consequences would be. He also said he had "no" desire to repair his relationship with the South African-born Tesla and SpaceX chief, and that he has "no intention of speaking to him." Just last week, Trump gave Musk a glowing send-off as he left his cost-cutting role at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But their relationship cracked within days as Musk described as an "abomination" the spending bill that, if passed by Congress, could define Trump's second term in office. Trump hit back in an Oval Office diatribe and from, there the row detonated, leaving Washington stunned. With real political and economic risks to their falling out, both had appeared to inch back from the brink on Friday, with Trump telling reporters "I just wish him well," and Musk responding on X: "Likewise." - 'Old news' - Trump spoke to NBC Saturday after Musk deleted one of the explosive allegations he had made during their fallout, linking the president with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Musk had alleged that the Republican leader is featured in unreleased government files on former associates of Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while he faced sex trafficking charges. The Trump administration has acknowledged it is reviewing tens of thousands of documents, videos and investigative material that his "MAGA" movement says will unmask public figures complicit in Epstein's crimes. Trump was named in a trove of deposition and statements linked to Epstein that were unsealed by a New York judge in early 2024. The president has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the case. "Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files," Musk posted on his social media platform, X. "That is the real reason they have not been made public." Musk did not reveal which files he was talking about and offered no evidence for his claim. He initially doubled down on the claim, writing in a follow-up message: "Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out." However, he appeared to have deleted both tweets by Saturday morning. Trump dismissed the claim as "old news" in his comments to NBC on Saturday, adding: "Even Epstein's lawyer said I had nothing to do with it." Supporters on the conspiratorial end of Trump's "Make America Great Again" base allege that Epstein's associates had their roles in his crimes covered up by government officials and others. They point the finger at Democrats and Hollywood celebrities, although not at Trump himself. No official source has ever confirmed that the president appears in any of the as yet unreleased material. Trump knew and socialized with Epstein but has denied spending time on Little Saint James, the private redoubt in the US Virgin Islands where prosecutors alleged Epstein trafficked underage girls for sex. "Terrific guy," Trump, who was Epstein's neighbor in both Florida and New York, said in an early 2000s profile of the financier. "He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side."
