Tan Chong falls 8.0pct before settling flat at midday

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd's share price dipped as much as 8.0 per cent in the morning session, before recovering to trade flat at 79 sen by the midday break.
The stock touched an intraday low of 72.5 sen, retracing gains from Wednesday's close of 79 sen.
It emerged as one of the most actively traded counters, with 19.56 million shares changing hands.
The volatility followed an unusual market activity query by Bursa Malaysia yesterday, after the stock surged 44 per cent or 25.5 sen to 83.5 sen from 58 sen on Tuesday.
RHB Research said Wednesday's rally reflected a shift in market sentiment, prompting the firm to upgrade its call on the stock to "Buy" from "Sell", with a significantly higher target price of RM1.12 from 27 sen previously.
The firm said the market started to relook at Tan Chong from an underlying asset angle following an unexpected land sale on July 10.
Tan Chong sold 1.30 hectares along Jalan Putra for RM148.8 million following the first land sale to Avaland Bhd in Petaling Jaya earlier this month for RM49 million.
The total gain on disposal for these lands is expected to be between RM15 million and RM18 million with both deals transacted between RM518 per square feet and RM1,067 per sq ft.
RHB Research said Tan Chong owns around 5.67-hectare non-manufacturing land - including showrooms, storage and service centres - across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor, based on its latest annual report.
"Assuming market values of RM250-RM1,050 per sq ft, we estimate these lands could be worth RM220 million, roughly 40 per cent of Tan Chong Motor's market capitalisation.
"More importantly, the group does not disclose its exhaustive list of assets.
"Hence, there may be other smaller properties that might not be used for its automotive business but are suitable for redevelopment, such as the recent land disposal was not included in the Top 10 largest properties, implying more assets to be potentially realised," the firm added.
RHB Research said Tan Chong still retains its traditional automotive model of owing the distribution network, which includes showrooms/properties vis-à-vis the current agency distribution model.
The firm said there may be incentives for Tan Chong to resize its business model by selling some of their showrooms as Nissan's market share has fallen from six per cent of TIV in 2010 to one per cent in 2024.
The group operates around 50-60 branches, of which 20-30 per cent are based in Kuala Lumpur.

KOTA BELUD: The government has allocated RM1.1 million for development projects in Kampung Kiau under the Madani Adopted Village and School programme. The funding was announced by Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick. Of the total, RM1 million will fund seven small-scale infrastructure projects in the village. Govt expenditure on civil servants' salaries expected to reach RM18bil next year

KOTA BARU: The government's expenditure on civil servants' salaries is expected to increase to RM18 billion next year, up from RM10 billion this year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat programme here today, Anwar said the increase reflected the government's commitment to the welfare and well-being of public sector employees. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said the rise would take into account the increasing cost of living, including expenses related to education and healthcare, while ensuring fairness to civil servants. "Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the economic ceiling and floor for the people must rise accordingly. "Thus, the Madani government urges private companies to set a minimum wage of RM1,700, while government-linked companies are to set it at RM3,100. "All government companies have been asked to ensure the implementation of the salary increase. They have also been reminded not only to take pride in profits but also to appreciate their employees, especially in the public sector. "The same applies to other groups such as farmers, fishermen, and padi farmers, who also receive various government benefits and incentive increases," he said. Also present was Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Anwar said while the government welcomed constructive criticism, he urged critics to also acknowledge the many changes the Madani government has brought about to the country. "We also recognise the importance of the government being close to the people to highlight important issues, such as through today's programme. "The people's income also depends on the country's economy, which can only be driven by a stable government and requires good cooperation between the federal and state governments," he said. It was previously reported that more than 1.6 million civil servants benefited from income increases ranging between 16.8 percent and 42.7 percent, along with changes to pension and retirement frameworks, with financial implications exceeding RM10 billion annually for the government. The salary adjustment is part of public service reforms under the Public Service Remuneration Scheme (SSPA), especially for civil servants in the executive group Grade 26 and below, who have low basic salaries.

Rafizi warns GST could increase burden on low-income households

KUALA LUMPUR: Reintroducing the goods and services tax (GST) would place a heavier financial burden on low-income households and trigger higher inflation, former economy minister Rafizi Ramli has cautioned. He said households currently not paying income tax because their earnings fall below the taxable threshold would, for the first time, be taxed under GST. "GST is a regressive tax because, in the end, it is ordinary people who pay," he said in the latest episode of the Yang Berhenti Menteri podcast. The Pandan member of parliament said that under the current sales and service tax (SST), these households are spared such taxation, as some items are exempted. The government has maintained that necessities will continue to be exempt under SST. "But when GST is imposed, all daily essentials are taxed. That could mean RM1,000 to RM2,000 a year in new costs for families who have never paid any income tax before," he said, adding that the tax could also drive up prices. Rafizi recalled the 2015 introduction of GST, which was followed by a noticeable price surge. "If GST is six per cent, prices will go up by six or seven per cent. "In Malaysia, once prices go up, they rarely come down," he said. He urged the government to focus on keeping inflation around two per cent and implementing wage reforms before considering GST in the future. As of June this year, the annual inflation rate stood at 1.1 per cent. "This is not about politics. "It's about maintaining price stability and giving enough runway for wage growth to outpace inflation," he said. Rafizi had previously stated in 2023 that while GST was the most efficient tax to curb evasion, it would increase the financial burden on lower-income groups. Last month, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government had no plans to reintroduce GST for now, describing it as "impractical" under the current economic conditions. He acknowledged the merits of the system but said it was "not suitable for now." In June, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said GST would only be considered once the economy improves and the minimum wage reaches RM4,000 or more.
