French Open player was slapped with £8k fine for hitting child with racket
This former top-25 star exited the French Open in the first round due to injury, suffering another Roland Garros setback after being hit with a huge fine in 2022
Romanian tennis star Irina-Camelia Begu was fined £8,000 at the French Open in 2022 after an outburst saw her racket strike a child in the stands. The 34-year-old WTA veteran couldn't build on her stellar record at Roland Garros this time around.
Facing home favourite Leolia Jeanjean in the first round of the competition's latest renewal, Begu flew into the lead with a 6-0 opening-set win, and while the match looked at her mercy, a poor second set went the way of her French opponent 7-5.
In the last set, however, Begu suffered an agonising calf injury, and though three games of the third were managed, Begu retired and exited the singles competition. Such misery unearths memories of a 2022 outburst in Paris, which saw the 34-year-old slapped with a hefty fine during a second-round matchup against Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Three years ago, Begu, then ranked world No. 63, advanced to the second round after beating Jasmine Paolini, setting up a clash against 30-seed Alexandrova.
A toughly-contested opening set went the way of the seeded player, though Begu bounced back to claim the second 6-3. Yet, frustrations soon arose in the third set, as, when going down a break during a crucial time in the clash, Begu vented her annoyance by throwing her racket towards her bench.
The racket flew up when colliding with the court, unfortunately hitting a young boy in the crowd in the face. The match umpire immediately came down from his seat, as the crying child was situated directly behind him.
Begu came to the scene of the incident and conversed with the umpire and the family of the boy who was hit. The tournament referee also came to the court to discuss the event.
In the end, the Romanian star was only handed a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct and was not defaulted, much to the annoyance of her opponent.
Begu rallied in the third set, claiming it 6-4 to advance to the third round at Roland Garros. Yet, the code violation would not be her only punishment for the outburst. She would later be fined £7.9k and issued an apology.
"It's an embarrassing moment for me, so I don't want to talk too much about it. I just want to apologise," stated Begu after the match. "My whole career, I didn't do something like this, and I feel really bad and sorry. So I'm just going to say again, sorry for the incident, and, yeah, it was just an embarrassing moment for me.
"It was a difficult moment because I didn't want to hit that racket. You hit the clay with the racquet, but you never expect to fly that much. It was, as I said, an embarrassing moment for me and I just want to end it and not talk about it and apologise again."
In the third round, Begu would face 2025 opponent Jeanjean, who was swept aside in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, with Jessica Pegula waiting in the fourth round.
Despite winning the first set and looking as though she could make her way past the fourth round in a major tournament for the first time, Pegula would take sets two and three 6-2 and 6-3 and knock Begu out. However, her second-round adversary, Alexandrova, felt Begu should have exited the competition earlier.
In a swiftly deleted social media post, Alexandrova expressed her frustrations, and captioned an Instagram post: "So disappointed to leave Roland Garros like that, I was trying to do my best, but seems like the rules were against me today. This shouldn't be happening. I hope after today's match rules will be improved for everyone's safety. We are responsible for our racket."

French tennis star Harriet Dart told to 'wear DEODORANT' finally breaks her silence after 'disrespectful' comments
French tennis player Lois Boisson has broken her silence on British star Harriet Dart's eyebrow-raising on-court comments that suggested that she 'needed deodorant' during their meeting earlier this year. The bizarre encounter took place in France at the Rouen Open in April when Dart was 6-0 down in the first set and part of the way through the second against the home favourite. Rather than focus on her game, Dart made a surprising request to the umpire which was picked up by the courtside microphones, calling for the official to intervene and 'tell her to wear deodorant' because 'she's smelling really bad'. The game continued without further incident, with Dart losing straight sets to the 22-year-old. The British No4 later apologised for the outburst, saying that she was full of regret for the 'heat-of-the-moment' comment. Boisson has largely kept silent on events in the weeks since, only poking fun as the controversy quickly went viral on social media by calling upon cosmetics brand Dove to offer her a sponsorship. The British No4 made the comment to the umpire during a change of ends in their meeting at the Rouen Open Commenters on social media had been quick to call for Dart to receive some kind of sanction for the statements, with one dubbing her 'so disrespectful' and others saying she should be 'suspended'. But gearing up to make her debut in the fourth round of the French Open, Boisson shared her true feelings about the encounter on Sunday. 'It was not difficult to deal with,' Boisson insisted. 'It was okay. It was nothing for me. 'She maybe made a mistake, then I joked about it, that's it.' Boisson admitted that she 'didn't hear' the comments during the match, and only learned about the dig 'two hours later'. The Frenchwoman remained adamant that the name-calling did not affect her, adding: 'It was nothing. Something is cool, you know? 'I take it with the coolest.' Boisson will hope that she maintains a similar froideur when she steps onto Roland-Garros' Court Philippe-Chatrier on Monday to face off with number-three seed Jessica Pegula. The Frenchwoman was handed a wild card at her home tournament, and has before made such a deep run at a Grand Slam. Boisson returns to the tour in 2025 after she was forcibly sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament tear a week before last year's French Open. The 22-year-old is gearing up for a historic fourth-round French Open tie with Jessica Pegula By contrast, Dart was knocked out of the singles tournament in the first round of qualifiers Then, she was ranked 152nd in the world, but after an extended spell out of the game, Boisson is now ranked in the high 300s. Regardless of her result against Pegula, however, Boisson is tracking to reach 170th at the world after her strong form in Paris saw her beat Elise Mertins, Anhelina Kalinina, and her compatriot Elsa Jacquemot. Dart meanwhile was unable to feature as a singles player on the red clay of Roland-Garros after her defeat in qualifiers in straight sets to Anastasiya Soboleva. The 28-year-old was later despatched in main draw doubles when she and Kimberly Birrell lost to Irina-Camelia Begu and Yanina Wickmayer in the first round.

Iga Swiatek battles back to extend winning French Open run
The four-time champion has not lost a match at Roland Garros since 2021, but she appeared to be heading for the exit when Elena Rybakina led 6-1 2-0. Rybakina, the former Wimbledon champion, had raced into a 5-0 lead after only 20 minutes. But in a match which eventually lasted two and a half hours, Swiatek came through 1-6 6-3 7-5. Never give up. Keep on fighting. That's what champions are made of.#RolandGarros — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 1, 2025 The Pole, who turned 24 on Saturday, now matches Monica Seles' 1990s run of 25 match wins at the tournament. She said: 'It was tough. In the first I felt like I was playing against Jannik Sinner!' Swiatek will face Elina Svitolina, who sprung a surprise by knocking out fourth seed and last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini, in the quarter-final. The 30-year-old from Ukraine saved three match points before winning 6-4 6-7 (6) 6-1 in another dramatic match. 'I would've never believed this match would swing my way,' she said. 'It was a really difficult match, Jasmine was playing really, really well. It was really tough. I had to fight until the last point and I'm very happy to be in the next round. Elina Svitolina saves 3 match points and upsets last year's finalist Paolini 🤯#RolandGarros — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 1, 2025 'Of course it's one or two points which decided the second set. I was really pleased to win the second set and played really well to close the match. 'We are at a grand slam so everyone is playing very well and everyone is fighting. It's all about trying to stay focused and finding the opportunities.' Svitolina's husband, Gael Monfils, was knocked out by Jack Draper in a thrilling four-setter on Thursday night. 'It's important to recover because today was a very difficult match,' she added. 'An ice bath, some food, speak with my brother and Gael as well, enjoy the moment with them and then practice tomorrow to prepare for my next round.' Italian Paolini, who also reached the Wimbledon final last year, said: 'It's a tough one. I think we played a great match. I had my chances. 'She played well, I didn't. You know, it's tennis, so it's hard to accept, but I have to.' World number one Aryna Sabalenka beat American Amanda Anisimova 7-5 6-3 to book a last-eight meeting with Paris Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, who battled past Liudmila Samsonova in three sets.
