French Open player was slapped with £8k fine for hitting child with racket

Daily Mirror31-05-2025
This former top-25 star exited the French Open in the first round due to injury, suffering another Roland Garros setback after being hit with a huge fine in 2022
Romanian tennis star Irina-Camelia Begu was fined £8,000 at the French Open in 2022 after an outburst saw her racket strike a child in the stands. The 34-year-old WTA veteran couldn't build on her stellar record at Roland Garros this time around.
Facing home favourite Leolia Jeanjean in the first round of the competition's latest renewal, Begu flew into the lead with a 6-0 opening-set win, and while the match looked at her mercy, a poor second set went the way of her French opponent 7-5.

In the last set, however, Begu suffered an agonising calf injury, and though three games of the third were managed, Begu retired and exited the singles competition. Such misery unearths memories of a 2022 outburst in Paris, which saw the 34-year-old slapped with a hefty fine during a second-round matchup against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Three years ago, Begu, then ranked world No. 63, advanced to the second round after beating Jasmine Paolini, setting up a clash against 30-seed Alexandrova.
A toughly-contested opening set went the way of the seeded player, though Begu bounced back to claim the second 6-3. Yet, frustrations soon arose in the third set, as, when going down a break during a crucial time in the clash, Begu vented her annoyance by throwing her racket towards her bench.
The racket flew up when colliding with the court, unfortunately hitting a young boy in the crowd in the face. The match umpire immediately came down from his seat, as the crying child was situated directly behind him.

Begu came to the scene of the incident and conversed with the umpire and the family of the boy who was hit. The tournament referee also came to the court to discuss the event.
In the end, the Romanian star was only handed a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct and was not defaulted, much to the annoyance of her opponent.
Begu rallied in the third set, claiming it 6-4 to advance to the third round at Roland Garros. Yet, the code violation would not be her only punishment for the outburst. She would later be fined £7.9k and issued an apology.

"It's an embarrassing moment for me, so I don't want to talk too much about it. I just want to apologise," stated Begu after the match. "My whole career, I didn't do something like this, and I feel really bad and sorry. So I'm just going to say again, sorry for the incident, and, yeah, it was just an embarrassing moment for me.
"It was a difficult moment because I didn't want to hit that racket. You hit the clay with the racquet, but you never expect to fly that much. It was, as I said, an embarrassing moment for me and I just want to end it and not talk about it and apologise again."
In the third round, Begu would face 2025 opponent Jeanjean, who was swept aside in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, with Jessica Pegula waiting in the fourth round.
Despite winning the first set and looking as though she could make her way past the fourth round in a major tournament for the first time, Pegula would take sets two and three 6-2 and 6-3 and knock Begu out. However, her second-round adversary, Alexandrova, felt Begu should have exited the competition earlier.
In a swiftly deleted social media post, Alexandrova expressed her frustrations, and captioned an Instagram post: "So disappointed to leave Roland Garros like that, I was trying to do my best, but seems like the rules were against me today. This shouldn't be happening. I hope after today's match rules will be improved for everyone's safety. We are responsible for our racket."

Hugo Ekitike 'confronted manager behind the scenes' in incident that speaks volumes

Hugo Ekitike made an instant impact for Liverpool in the Community Shield, but those that have worked with the striker know that his performance came from the French striker's unwavering self-belief Liverpool will have been delighted with Hugo Ekitike's debut last weekend - and his commanding performance at Wembley stemmed from an unflinching self-confidence. Ekitike, 23, joined the Reds in July for a staggering £79million from Eintracht Frankfurt. ‌ After just four minutes of Liverpool's Community Shield defeat by Crystal Palace, Ekitike announced himself in style. He took possession on the edge of the box, dropped the shoulder and sent the ball past Dean Henderson into the bottom corner, sending the Red half of Wembley into raptures. ‌ For those that know Ekitike, his confident strut, deft touches, classy finish and reaction to losing all came as no surprise. The young star first forged a name for himself at French side Reims, where his faith in his own ability began to take root, as he once confronted a coach behind the scenes to ask why he wasn't playing. ‌ The club's head coach at the time, David Guion, was impressed by a 17-year-old Ekitike, then playing in the reserves, and asked him to come train with the senior players. "I watched him play in a lot of local tournaments," Guion told The Athletic. "He was the best young player in the region. He scored a lot of goals, made good runs in behind. He was tall and rangy. It wasn't hard to see his potential." After a week of training with his side, Guion was set to name his squad for the next match. Naturally, given his age and reserve team standing, Ekitike was not included. His decision did not go down well with Ekitike. The French star asked to speak to Guion and told his boss that he had made the wrong call in omitting him - an action demonstrating that Ekitike's stunning self belief has been present from an early age. "He just could not understand why he was not in the squad," Guion said. "That was Hugo. He was impatient with everything." ‌ Guion added: "The kid is very, very, very sure of himself. That's his big quality. He's very conscious of his qualities and he always aims high. He doesn't doubt himself." Franck Chalencon, Ekitike's coach at under-19 and reserve level also revealed how Ekitike also thrives off being the focal point in a team. Possibly a point of contention to come with Liverpool still linked with a blockbuster move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, despite already having one bid rejected. "You felt his personality on the pitch," said Chalencon. "He had to be the leader of the attack, the star striker. He always wanted the ball, always wanted to be the one who scored or changed a match." ‌ Ekitike has already had one star-studded move in his career. A brief stint with European Champions PSG ended up being a baptism of fire as he struggled under Luis Enrique, making a solitary appearance. Yet asked by Le Parisien whether he could struggle to make an impact for the French champions before the move, Ekitike's powerful state of mind was on display again. "The risk never entered into my thinking," he said. "My football has never let me down." The fact that Liverpool lost the Community Shield on penalties perhaps somewhat takes the shine off Ekitike's debut. Yet the competitive bow of the Reds' new No.22 will have sent plenty of encouragement to fans ahead of the new season, as will his unshakeable self-assurance.

World's richest tennis player makes retirement admission as she speaks out on future

Jessica Pegula has announced that she will not follow the trend of elite tennis stars playing into their 40s, with Coco Gauff just about convincing her to carry on until the 2028 Olympics Billionaire tennis star Jessica Pegula has revealed she is looking to retire within the next 'two or three years'. Pegula, dubbed the world's richest tennis player, has won nine singles titles on the WTA Tour and is currently ranked No. 4 in the world. ‌ But despite being just 31 years old, the American insists she won't follow the Williams sisters' example by playing into her forties. The 2024 US Open finalist has set a deadline for her time on the court by stating she will not play professional tennis at the age of 35. ‌ Pegula has endured a tough and inconsistent season but has still won three titles, making her the oldest player currently inside the top 10. But she still has one specific tournament in mind – the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles – which she hopes could be her swan song. ‌ She recently told Caroline Garcia on the Tennis Insider Club: "I don't [have plans to follow the Williams sisters' example], I would definitely not be playing at 35, definitely not. "I think that's where I for sure have to stop. I think at 31? Yeah, I think it would be cool maybe like to try and make the Olympics, because it's in LA in a couple years. 'Three years, that's a long time, though. I'm counting technically like two years, because then you qualify, so I'll probably have an idea by then if I'm in or not. So we'll make it sound like two, it's three.' Given that she is the daughter of businessman Terry Pegula and stands to inherit some of his £5.6billion fortune, it is unlikely that she will continue playing out of any financial incentive. Terry, ranked as the 418th wealthiest person by Forbes, amassed his wealth through his ventures in the oil and gas industry. The billionaire also owns sporting giants Buffalo Bills (NFL) and Buffalo Sabres (NHL). Among the family's extravagant possessions are a £58million superyacht named Top Five II and a private jet, which Jessica also uses. Meanwhile, in terms of Pegula's own wealth she's earned on the tennis caught, she has amassed almost £14m from her playing career. ‌ Pegula's decision to play until the next Olympics was thanks to her former doubles partner and compatriot Coco Gauff. Having reached No. 1 in the doubles rankings together and represented America at last year's Paris Olympics, 21-year-old Gauff is insistent that the pair have to play together in LA. Pegula explained: 'I was talking to Coco, and she was like, 'You can play until LA.' She was mad at me because I was like, yeah, maybe a couple more years. ‌ 'She's like, 'If you're going to play two more years, you might as well just play another year for the LA Olympics.' And she's like, 'You can't retire before then.' This was the year before so it was four years. I was like, 'Coco, it's a long time, I'm going to be 34, what are you talking about?' 'She's like, 'You can just stay top 20. The way you hit the ball, you'll be fine.' She's like, 'I'm not letting you retire before the LA Olympics, especially if I qualify.' I was like, 'Okay. You're young, it's okay, you won't even be 25 yet, you still can't rent a car!'' Pegula went on to reveal that she will not return to professional tennis when she decides to have children. Since winning Bad Homburg, Pegula has gone only 2-4 in her last six matches. She was dumped out of the opening round at Wimbledon in July and suffered a disappointing defeat in the third round of the Cincinnati Open. But she'll be hoping to turn things around at her home Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, where she finished runner-up last year.

Viktoria Plzen vs Rangers injury news: 9 out as Russell Martin mulls over two major decisions in Europe

Rangers will look to take another huge step towards qualification for the Champions League as they face Viktoria Plzen in the second leg of the third qualifying round at the Doosan Arena on Tuesday (kick-off: 6pm). Russell Martin's side enter the game on the back of another difficult result in the Scottish Premiership, where they had James Tavernier's injury-time penalty to thank for rescuing a 1-1 draw against Dundee at Ibrox on Saturday evening. However, after inflicting a 3-0 defeat over their opponents in last week's first leg in Glasgow, the Gers head to Plzen well in control of the tie. In truth, the hosts have it all to do, and enter the game on the back of a difficult weekend result against 1. FC Slovácko in the Czech First League, where they were forced to settle for a 1-1 after conceding a 93rd-minute penalty. Despite their commanding lead, there's certain to be intrigue as to how Martin sets his side up. His shock starting XI saw both Tavernier and Nicolas Raskin dropped to the bench, though the latter may be handed a reprieve after rescuing a point for Rangers at the weekend. Ahead of the game at Ibrox, The Scotsman has all the latest team news: 1 .
