Two people released after questioning about fatal assault of woman in Cork last December
Vanessa O'Callaghan, who was 36 years old, was
assaulted while she was availing of the services of a soup kitchen
on St Patrick's Street in Cork city.
She was attacked by up to three people outside the former Savoy Cinema.

She received CPR from a volunteer at the scene but later passed away in Cork University Hospital.
Gardaí at Anglesea Street station are still investigating the fatal assault.
A man and a woman, both aged in their 30s, were arrested yesterday in connection with the investigation.
They were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a garda station in Cork.
They have since been released without charge and a gardaí are preparing a file to be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Teenager dies following Co Kerry crash
A teenager, who was seriously injured in a road crash in Co Kerry at the weekend, has died in hospital. The crash occurred on Saturday afternoon on the L1029 road at Deerpark, Lixnaw. The driver, who was aged in his late teens and travelling alone, was airlifted to Cork University Hospital, where he died this morning. No other injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly any road users who may have dash-cam footage and who were travelling in the area on 2 August between 5.15pm and 5.45pm, to contact Listowel Garda Station on 068 50820, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station. A total of 98 people have died on Irish roads so far this year.

He was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition at around 5:40pm on Saturday after the crash on the L1029 road at Deerpark in Lixnaw. The young driver, who was aged in his late teens and was the only occupant of the car involved in the crash, was sadly pronounced dead in Cork University Hospital this morning, gardai confirmed. Officers are continuing to investigate the crash. An examination of the scene on the L1029 road has already been carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigations. Gardai this morning reissued an appeal for any witnesses of the incident to come forward. A statement from Garda HQ said: "Gardai are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward. "Any road users who may have dash-cam and were travelling in the area on the 2nd August 2025 between 5.15pm and 5.45pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardai. "Anyone with information is asked to contact Listowel Garda Station on (068) 50820, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station." Yesterday, the mother of a teenage cyclist who died in hospital following a collision in Dublin paid a heartbreaking tribute to her "beautiful" boy. The incident, which involved a car and a bicycle, happened on the R113, Fonthill Road South in Clondalkin shortly after 11:40pm on Sunday, July 27. MUM'S EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE The cyclist, a 19-year-old man, was raced to Beaumont Hospital in a critical condition but he was pronounced dead on Monday. The deceased has been named locally as Luke Bryne, 19, from Clondalkin. In a heartbreaking post on social media his mother Martina McGarry wrote: "My beautiful son you're in peace now. "You put one of the hardest fights you gave me in 19 years of happy memories that I'll cherish forever. "You'll never be forgotten. You will always be in my heart. "I know you will be in heaven looking down on me. You're back home with you dad now gone but never forgotten. Love you so much son. Sleep tight."

Investigation under way after body found in Cork house
Gardaí have started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 58-year-old man whose body was found in a rented house in Cork on Tuesday afternoon. The man's body was found by Gardaí in a house at Lower Barrack View near the North Cathedral around 4pm after they were contacted by a man in the area. It is understood the man had gone down the cul-de-sac behind the cathedral and, looking in a window of the terraced house, saw what he believed was a body in a room. Gardaí subsequently gained access to the house before immediately cordoning off the scene and requesting the services of Garda scenes-of-crime examiners, who preserved the scene. READ MORE Gardaí also requested the services of the State Pathologist's Office. The man's body is due to removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem on Wednesday. Officers began door-to-door inquiries and have established that the man – who was renting the property – had not been seen by his neighbours for a number of days. Garda sources said there was no sign of forced entry to the property but they were keeping an open mind as to the cause of the man's death pending the postmortem. They say they are hopeful the postmortem will establish what happened to the deceased man and give an approximate time of death.
