Over 50 kids currently missing
Irish authorities are investigating some 52 cases of child abduction, where kids have been taken to or from Ireland, against the wishes of a parent. A report in the Irish Times shows that the Irish Central Authority, which is under the umbrella of the Department of Justice, and handles international parental child abduction cases, is currently attempting to resolve some 52 cases involving missing children. As of August 7th this year the organisation was working on some 39 cases where a parent is in Ireland, but their child or children have been taken to another country, and 13 'incoming' cases where a parent living abroad is seeking the return of their child from Ireland. Pic: Shutterstock In most cases of missing children, some 30 out of 39 cases, these children are understood to be somewhere in Europe, with nine cases of kids who are thought to have been taken much farther afield. Eight of the 13 incoming cases relate to children who were previously located elsewhere in Europe, with five cases involving children previously outside Europe. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said 'In the majority of cases, this arises after a relationship between parents breaks down, and one parent chooses to leave their country of residency prior to issues of custody and guardianship being finalised.' Pic: Shutterstock In 2024, 20 outgoing cases were resolved, where children were returned to Ireland, and 21 incoming cases were resolved with children returned from Ireland to another country. Ireland is one of over 100 countries party to The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. A Department of Justice spokesperson said The Hague convention 'aims to ensure that an abducted child is returned to the country where they normally live, so that issues of custody and guardianship can be decided by the courts of that country'.

The Indo Daily: Breaking Ballyseedy, Ep2 – Morris O'Shea Salazar and The Sinaloa Cartel
In the first episode of 'Breaking Ballyseedy', we uncovered the mammoth drug operation taking place from a family-run garden centre in the small Kerry village of Ballyseedy, and asked how Nathan McDonnell - entrepreneur and former president of the Tralee Chamber of Commerce - found himself involved in such illegal activity. Today we explore how the crystal meth shipment made its way to Ireland and profile Morris O'Shea Salazar, who went from Kerry teenager to international drugs kingpin with the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel, which includes a direct link to the El Chapo dynasty. Ellen Coyne is joined on this concluding episode of 'Breaking Ballyseedy' by Niall Donald, Deputy Editor with the Sunday World, Ralph Regal, Southern Correspondent at the Irish Independent, and Jerry O'Sullivan, presenter of Kerry Today on Radio Kerry, to look at the unlikely Irish connection to one of the world's deadliest drug cartels, and to ask what happened to Nathan McDonnell and the Ballyseedy Empire.

Two dead, ten hospitalised in Pennsylvania steel plant explosions
Two workers died and ten were wounded after blasts at a US Steel plant in the state of Pennsylvania, officials said. "Multiple explosions occurred today at US Steel Clairton Coke Works," the state's Governor Josh Shapiro said in a post on X, naming a plant some 25km outside the city of Pittsburgh. "Injured employees have now been transported to local hospitals to receive care, and search-and-rescue efforts remain active at the plant," he added. US Steel and Allegheny County Police reported two people were found dead, with the second fatality requiring "an extensive search and rescue effort" to locate the body. One injured victim who had previously been reported missing was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment, authorities said, adding that "nine (other) people were transported to area hospitals to be treated for a variety of injuries." US Steel said the incident happened at around 3pm Irish time yesterday and that emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. "During times like this, US Steel employees come together to extend their love, prayers, and support to everyone affected," David Burritt, CEO of the company, said in a statement. Some US media outlets had reported that people were trapped under the rubble of the explosion. The Clairton Coke Works is the largest coking factory in the United States - a facility where coal is processed to produce coke, a key fuel in steelmaking.
