NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb reportedly about to resign

7NEWS07-05-2025
NSW's top cop is set to resign, according to media reports on Wednesday.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb will leave the role within weeks, The Daily Telegraph reports.
Police Minister Yasmin Catley is due to confirm the resignation in state parliament on Wednesday, the outlet said.
Webb is said to be finishing up on May 18.
It comes after a three-year stint in the job, and only months after Webb dismissed claims she was gunning to retire early.
Webb's time as Commissioner has not been free from controversy.
She has been criticised over a number of statements, including her refusal to watch bodycam footage of a police officer tasering 95-year-old aged care home resident Clare Nowland, who died after the incident.
Webb was also accused of taking too long to front the public after former senior constable Beau Lamarre-Condon was charged with murdering Luke Davies and his boyfriend Jesse Baird.
She was also accused of using flippant language when she said the alleged murders were a 'crime of passion'.
The Commissioner even battled backlash over a Taylor Swift reference while fending off critics during an appearance on Sunrise.
'There will always be haters. Haters like to hate. Isn't that what Taylor says?' she said at the time.
Swift memes were circulating among police officers soon after, and Upper House MP Rod Roberts argued the pop star's lyrics should not have been used during such a serious investigation.
'I invite public scrutiny as it is an important part of being NSW Police Commissioner,' Webb said in August last year.
But she said some of the comments against her have gone too far, including claims made during an investigation into the purchase of bottles of gin.
Roberts alleged Webb used parliamentary privilege to gain free gin for herself and her staff to consume themselves.
The gin purchase, which Webb said was to be distributed as gifts or donated for charity purposes, was later found by the watchdog to have been in accordance with policies and procedures.
Webb said she had never tasted the Commissioner's Gin and said Roberts' comments were 'intended to damage my personal reputation'.
NSW Police would not comment on reports of Webb's resignation.

‘Wrong person, wrong time': Forest Lodge shooting leaves beloved father-of-two dead, 'targeted' associate fighting for life

A Sydney man has been remembered as a kind and loving father-of-two after he was gunned down in a public shooting outside The Harold Hotel in Forest Lodge. Emergency services were called to Ross Street following reports of a public shooting where reports of more than 15 shots were fired. Police confirmed 39-year-old Gilbert Shino died at the scene, while his friend, 31-year-old Maradona Yalda, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds to his legs, neck, and chest. Witnesses described bullets 'flying everywhere,' with hotel staff narrowly avoiding injury. Investigators believe Yalda, who was known to police and had links to Sydney's criminal underworld, was the intended target. The attack came just days after he returned to Australia from time spent abroad in Dubai, Singapore and Bali. He had come back to Sydney to visit his sick grandmother and ignored the life threats he had received in the past with a price on his head set by underworld criminals, according to The Daily Telegraph. Relatives and friends say his friend Shino had no criminal ties, describing him instead as a family man who loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, Natasha Avakian, and their two young daughters, aged nine and seven. 'He was the life of the party, always smiling, always lifting others up,' one relative said on Instagram. Another relative told Sky News, 'Gilbert was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong childhood friend.' A GoFundMe page launched by family friend Ashie Michael to support Shino's young family has already raised more than $65,000 from over 120 donations. Ms Michael wrote on the fundraiser website, 'It breaks my heart to be writing this, but our beloved Giby was taken from us far too soon. He was a devoted husband and a loving father… his warmth, kindness, and joy touched every person who had the blessing of knowing him.' Condolences will be received at St Mary's Assyrian Church of the East in Smithfield on Tuesday evening, with a funeral service expected to be held on Thursday, August 21. Police have located a burnt-out car on Monday evening in Rydalmere believed to be linked to the attack. Forensic teams are examining the vehicle as part of the investigation. While detectives are yet to confirm if Shino was deliberately targeted, friends and family maintain he had no involvement in organised crime and was an innocent victim of Sydney's escalating gangland violence.

Police probing burnt-out sports car following dramatic fatal shooting at pub in Forest Lodge in Sydney's inner west

A suspicious sports car fire is at the centre of a police investigation into a fatal shooting outside an inner-west Sydney pub over the weekend, with police probing all possible links to the dramatic incident that left one man dead. Firefighters extinguished the fire on Primrose Avenue, Rydalmere in Sydney's west about 9.50pm on Monday, with police now treating the blaze as suspicious, a NSW Police statement said. The are no reported injuries as a result of the fire. It follows a dramatic public shooting outside a pub in Forest Lodge in the city's inner west on Sunday evening, during which one man died and another was seriously injured. Gilbert Shino, 39, has been named as the man was killed, with his friend Maradona Yalda, 31, identified as the man who survived. Mr Yalda is in a stable condition following two surgeries. The survivor reportedly has links to Assyrian street gang DLASTHR - otherwise known as 'the last hour' - and is known to former Comanchero member Andre Kallita. The two men had been shot multiple times, with police believing the bullets were fired by unknown people who fled the scene in a car. The burnt-out car discovered in Rydalmere is a Ford Mustang that matches the description of a vehicle spotted near Sunday's shooting, The Daily Telegraph has reported. NSW Police have said "any links to recent incidents will be examined" as part of the probe into the car fire. However, no links have been confirmed at this stage, the statement said. Police are urging anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage relating to the blaze to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000. A major police probe was launched following the shooting in Forest Lodge, with patrons of The Harold Park Hotel reportedly taking cover under tables for a short time after shots were fired. A crime scene was set up and detectives launched an investigation involving the Homicide Squad. Police are seeking to identify a dark blue Ford Mustang spotted in the vicinity of the pub after the incident. NSW Police confirmed on Tuesday morning that no arrests have yet been made in relation to the shooting and inquiries remain ongoing.
