Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for what could be the most defining match in the club's illustrious history as they travel to Cairo to face Pyramids FC in the decisive second leg of the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League final at the 30 June Stadium (kick-off 7pm).
With the tie finely balanced following a 1-1 stalemate in the first leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium last week, the Brazilians know the stakes couldn't be higher.
Now needing to take the initiative away from home, head coach Miguel Cardoso will be leaning on several of his top performers to deliver when it matters most.

'As you know I am not a coach who always looks only at the top teams to get players, I always look at other teams as well. 'We will do it without Sundowns players. Let's hope that we can find some other players too. It's very interesting for me to see players from other teams in these friendly games.' Tanzania, who are also preparing for the resumption of World Cup qualifiers in September, as well as the upcoming Cecafa Senior Men's Challenge Cup, were last in action in March, recording a 3-0 home win over Congo and a 2-0 defeat away to Morocco. The Taifa Stars have selected a strong squad, featuring a strong representation from Simba SC, who reached the final of the CAF Confederation Cup. Tanzania is also boosted by the presence of foreign-based stars Simon Msuva (Al Talaba, Iraq), Selemani Mwalimu (Wydad AC, Morocco) and Alphonse Mabula (Shamakhi, Azerbaijan). Tanzania coach Hemed Suleiman has acknowledged Bafana Bafana will be a tough opponent. 'South Africa are currently performing well,' he said. 'We also have a strong team, so it's a good opportunity to see how we measure up. 'It's encouraging to get opportunities like these. We've become more competitive, and that's what Tanzanians should expect—positive results and strong performances. 'Our squad is a mix of experienced and young players, and these games provide a great platform for building confidence and developing team chemistry.' Basadien and Sibisi will captain young Bafana in friendlies
Stellenbosch FC fullback Fawaaz Basadien and Orlando Pirates centreback Nkosinathi Sibisi will share the captaincy duties for Bafana Bafana in their friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. South Africa meet Tanzania at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday, then Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday (both 7.30pm). Broos announced on Thursday Basadien will wear the armband in the first of those games and Sibisi in the second. The coach explained earlier this week why he thought Sibisi has such strong leadership qualities for his Bafana squad that boasts many new faces. There are no Mamelodi Sundowns players in the squad as they have earned a few days' rest from their Caf Champions League second leg (3-2 aggregate) defeat against Pyramids FC in Cairo on Sunday and begin preparations for the Fifa Club World Cup that starts in the US on June 14. Broos has used that as an opportunity to include some of the bright young emerging stars from the Pirates who also reached the semifinals of the Champions League and a host of other new faces as the coach casts his net wide for more talent and depth. With Sundowns goalkeeper and Bafana captain Ronwen Williams not in Polokwane, Broos has picked Sibisi — a long-time member of his squad — as one of the players take the armband, a smart move given his familiarity with the nine Buccaneers players in the squad. 'It was a little bit of searching but I think with Sibisi we have a good captain,' the Belgian said. 'He is an experienced player who has been with Bafana Bafana since I have been here, from the first game. '[It was about] his experience as an older player, he is a guy who has the respect of everybody so I think he's a good one to replace Ronwen.' Among these are talented young striker or midfielder Simphiwe Selepe, 20, winger Mohau Nkota, 20, and centreback Mbekezeli Mbokazi, 19. Bucs, though, more than the other side represented in the Bafana squad, played a lot of matches in 2023-24. Broos was asked if he is concerned about fatigue from his Pirates contingent. 'At the end of the season all the players [from all the clubs] had a very difficult season with many games. Some players more than others and when you take the Pirates players, there are nine in my squad. 'But they are professionals. And I [believe] that players are always very happy to come [to Bafana camps]. And when you are happy and motivated then you forget the fatigue. 'But I can understand it and we will take that fatigue into account when we train.' The talented attacker has struggled to make the starting eleven this season but has been seen as a super-sub, amassing twenty-five league appearances, during which he has scored three goals and two assists. In the CAF Champions League, he recorded another five-goal contribution in eight games. Long-term target Fiston Mayele may be out of reach for Kaizer Chiefs, who will have recently heard of the player receiving bids upwards of R74 million.
