New dad killed in wreck with dump truck while heading to pick up wife and newborn from hospital
Dennis Lewis Jr., 35, died Friday after his motorcycle collided with a dump truck near Libertyville, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago. His daughter, Harley Rose, was born just three days earlier, according to a GoFundMe launched to support his family.
According to witnesses, Lewis was on his motorcycle approaching an intersection with a green light when a dump truck made a left turn in front of his motorcycle, Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli told The Independent.
Lewis collided with the truck and was ejected from his motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lewis died from blunt force injuries to his head and neck, Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek told the Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
The truck driver is uninjured and cooperating with the investigation, Covelli said.
Lewis never got the chance to hold his newborn daughter at home, according to the GoFundMe page.
'His sudden passing has left a tremendous hole in our hearts and a heavy burden on the mother of his newborn, who is now navigating the unimaginable: caring for a brand-new baby while grieving the loss of her partner,' the GoFundMe page reads.
The funds will be used to support Harley Rose and her mother, Amberly. The page has a goal of $6,500 and has received more than $4,900 as of Wednesday morning.
'It's important to us that people understand Dennis didn't cause this — his life was taken unfairly, just days after he became a father for the first time,' the GoFundMe page reads. 'He never got the chance to bring Harley home.'
The crash is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

From The Times: July 24, 1925 Three bathers, two men and a woman, were drowned off the Côte des Basques to-day. One of them, Mrs Albert Williams, wife of an Englishman, having ventured beyond the limits where the bathing is considered safe, was warned by a whistle from M Carcabues, the swimming master, who is entrusted with keeping a watch over the bathers. Unfortunately the warning was not heard, and suddenly Mrs Williams struck violently against a rock and sank. Her daughter went to her assistance, but failed to secure her, and was herself only rescued just in time by M Carcabues, while another bather, Mr James Gennet, an artist, of London, who also endeavoured to give assistance, in his turn disappeared. Family pay touching tribute to ‘caring' 78-year-old killed after car smashed into her home
A HEARTBROKEN family have paid tribute to a "caring, sharing, and stunning" mum who was killed in a tragic crash. Barbara Howard died in hospital after a Jaguar car ploughed into her property, in Coventry, shortly before 5pm on July 17. 2 2 The Jaguar had been involved in a smash with a Volkswagen van at the junction of Shilton Lane and Lentons Lane. It is understood the vehicle then swerved off the road and hit Barbara's house. The 78-year-old was inside at the time, and rushed to hospital where she died a short time later. In a statement, Barbara's heartbroken family said: "Caring, sharing, glamorous, and stunning, someone who loved life. "Dancing mother of Debbie and Julie, our best friend was taken in the most horrific way. "We love her to the moon and back." A spokesperson for Midlands Police said: "Our investigation into the collision is continuing, and the drivers of both vehicles involved were spoken to at the scene. Grieving parents of Bailey Chadwick make heartbreaking appeal for driver to go to cops after son killed in ‘hit & run'
THE family of Bailey Chadwick, who was killed in a suspected hit-and-run, have made a heartbreaking appeal to the driver to hand themself in. The 19-year-old was walking home in Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire, when he was fatally injured on the B6265 in the early hours of Sunday. 8 8 Bailey had earlier been working at the Royal Oak pub before spending time with friends. He had been due to go travelling to Thailand this week and the police officer in charge of the investigation said the teenager had "a lifetime of adventures ahead of him". The young lad's parents have since made a desperate appeal to the driver to come forward and turn themself in as it's the "least they can do". Speaking close to the scene of the collision, Dayle Knights, Bailey's mum, said through tears "no words can express how absolutely devastated we are." "Bailey was just a normal, happy, outgoing 19-year-old, who had his whole life ahead of him," she added. The teenager 's heartbroken stepdad, Daniel Horler, made an emotional plea to the driver to "do the right thing" and speak to the police. He said: "He should be living his best life seeing a new country, exploring new people, but instead he was left alone to die. "Bailey was torn away from us at such a young age. The fact that someone knows he was driving that night is heartbreaking for all of us. "Please, if it's you, do the right thing and speak to the police. The detective said detailed investigations are under way, including using CCTV footage, and there are a number of lines of inquiry. She said: "As the driver, this is your opportunity to come to us before we come to you. "If you know who was driving the vehicle which fatally injured Bailey, then please do the right thing and contact us now.
