Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiver Louis Rees-Zammit has announced that he will be leaving the NFL and returning to rugby.
During the 2024 offseason, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as part of the NFL's International Pathway Program (IPP). Before that, the Wales native was an accomplished rugby player.
Rees-Zammit was released by the Chiefs during roster cutdowns last summer and then landed on the Jaguars' practice squad, where he played out the rest of the 2024 season.
Rees-Zammit was the Jaguars' IPP designated player this season, which allowed Jacksonville to have 91 players on the offseason roster. That designation is now open if the Jaguars choose to fill it again.
The decision by Rees-Zammit to go back to rugby was something that was already on his mind earlier this offseason.
"I'm 24 now, probably got one to two more years to try and make it depending on how this year goes," Rees-Zammit said in an interview with talkSPORT's Hawksbee and Jacobs.. "I'll be 25, 26 when I go back to rugby. I like to think I can still play at the highest level."
Rees-Zammit had been sidelined in the last few training camp practices with a lower back injury.

If they do not sign another player using the exemption, they will be limited to 16 players on the practice squad instead of 17. The network has decided to move on from a three-time Pro Bowler. Last week, CBS unveiled its game announcers for the 2025 regular season. As you'd expect, the ton names like Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Ian Eagle will remain key contributors for the network. Former NFL running back Tiki Barber, however, was left off this list from CBS. He has been a game analyst for CBS since 2019, working alongside Andrew Catalon, Matt Ryan and a few other broadcasters. Matthew Stafford won't take part in Rams' joint practice with Cowboys
Sean McVay won't have to worry about Matthew Stafford catching a twice-tipped pass and stumbling over the goal line during a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys. That anxiety-inducing event occurred last year when the Rams practiced against the Cowboys. On Tuesday, the Rams again travel to Oxnard to practice against the Cowboys before Saturday's preseason game at SoFi Stadium. When the Rams go through a jogthrough on Monday, Stafford will continue to work out on his own, McVay said Sunday after the final public workout at Loyola Marymount. 'He is able to do a little bit more, which is good, and things are progressing well,' McVay said. 'But he won't take part in the jogthrough because he'll be doing some other stuff during that time.' McVay said Stafford's workouts with trainers have included some static throwing exercises, running on a treadmill, light cardio and core work. 'It's more just functional strength surrounding the area while making sure that you don't do anything to set yourself back, based on the trajectory that he's doing,' McVay said. 'But we are looking forward to getting him and easing him back to football hopefully in the near future.'
