Tension prevails over likelihood of protest if Akal Takht officiates Gargaj to address Sikh community ahead of Op Blue Star anniversary
CHANDIGARH: As the 41st anniversary of Operation Blue Star approaches on June 6 (Friday), the situation remains tense due to the possibility of the protest at the Akal Takht (Highest Temporal seat of Sikhs).
The officiating Jathedar (High Priest) Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj is likely to address the sikh community on the anniversary.
The Sikh hardliner group Damdami Taksal's chief, Harnam Singh Dhumma, has demanded that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) should stop Gargaj from doing so, as he has not been accepted by the Sikh community as the Jathedar.
Also, Nihang announced that they will not allow it to happen.
Thus, SGPC is worried as it may be challenging to maintain peace during the commemoration. Meanwhile, SGPC is trying to strike a compromise to defuse the issue.
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami had recently visited the headquarters of Taksal at Gurdwara Gurdarshan Parkash at Chowk Mehta village.
A meeting that lasted for over one and a half hours to strike a compromise, assured that the issue would be resolved before the event.
Hoping for an amicable solution, Dhami said that a meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Takshal's chief Dhumma does not want Gargaj to deliver the customary speech on June 6, as various Sikh bodies have not approved his appointment.
"SGPC has never indulged in confrontation with Damdami Taksal. I hope an amicable solution will be worked out before the anniversary,'' he said.
Dhumma, who is now close to the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) following his support to the saffron party's Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra last November, has been reiterating that if Gargaj addresses the gathering, it will vitiate the atmosphere.
He added that they do not want any clash during the event and are fully ready to cooperate with the SGPC.
However, he said that they have been appealing that SGPC should appoint a Jathedar who is approved by the community and highlighted that the Gargaj is not approved by everyone.
"If a conflicting situation arises on that occasion, the responsibility will lie with the president of the SGPC,' he asserted.

Punjab Police probes Tinder profile suspected to be linked to Amritpal
The Faridkot district police have written to various social media platforms, including the popular dating app Tinder, seeking details of accounts suspected to be linked to radical Sikh leader and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pragya Singh said on Saturday that a communication was sent to the companies last week as a part of its investigation in the murder case of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau, in which the jailed MP is a key accused. Hari Nau, who had once been a close associate of Amritpal, was shot dead in October last year, allegedly at the behest of the incarcerated leader for speaking out against him through a Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks'. 'During the probe, social media accounts, including Tinder, suspected to be related to the accused, Amritpal, were traced. Screenshots of these suspected accounts were attached in the communications sent separately to different companies. Any further statement will be made after analysing the data,' said the SSP. An official, seeking anonymity, said the investigators came across screenshots of a Tinder account with the user name 'Amrit Sandhu' where sexually explicit messages were sent. Sources said that the district police authorities have sought from Tinder and other platforms, details furnished by the subscribers for the said accounts, IP address logs, phone number, location details etc. 'These details will throw light on the possible reasons behind the targeted killing of Hari Nau,' said the source. Soon after Hari Nau's killing, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav had stated that the activist had been killed at the behest of Amritpal. The MP's father Tarsem Singh, however, alleged that attempts were being made at 'character assassination' of Amritpal.

BJP leader Jagmohan Singh Raju writes to PM Narendra Modi for release of Sikh prisoners
On the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state general secretary and former IAS officer Jagmohan Singh Raju wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to release Sikh prisoners on humanitarian grounds. Sharing the letter on his Facebook page, Raju said, 'Release Sikh prisoners on humanitarian grounds – put final lid on the Dark Era of 1980s in Punjab (sic).' In the letter penned in Hindi, he wrote: 'Today, June 6, is the day of pain and anger for the Sikh Panth. On this day in 1984, as you uttered in the Parliament, an attack was launched on the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, Akal Takht. You are the first Prime Minister who officially recognised this as an attack on the Akal Takht. Even Sikh PM Manmohan Singh did not have courage to accept this reality.' 'The attack on Akal Takht wounded the Sikh psyche and pride permanently. Due to lack of mature leadership needed to pacify hurt sentiments of Panth, Sikh youths opted for insurgency against this oppression. In revenge, Indira Gandhi, the then PM, was assassinated, followed by Sikh massacre in Delhi…This bloody era eliminated a generation of Sikh youths,' read the letter. 'Modi ji, I humbly request you to reconsider the release of Sikh prisoners on grounds of justice and compassion. They committed the crime because they were enraged over the attack on Golden Temple. They have served the adequate punishment for their offences. Time has come now to show compassion for them,' he wrote Raju unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly elections on a BJP ticket from Amritsar East.

Harsimrat urges EAM to sensitise UAE govt on Sikhs' five articles of faith
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to initiate a dialogue with the UAE government to sensitise it about the religious significance of the five articles of faith, especially the 'kirpan', for the initiated Sikhs. In a letter to the minister, the Bathinda MP said she was making this appeal in the wake of a recent "advisory" by the Indian Embassy in UAE directing Indians not to carry sharp objects while visiting the country in view of Article 405 of the UAE penal law which prohibits the same. This move has caused deep distress and mental agony to Sikh travellers and residents alike, Harsimrat said, noting that there have been instances of Sikhs being detained and compelled to remove their 'kirpan'. She also cited a recent case of an elderly man being detained in Abu Dhabi for wearing the 'kirpan' and turban. Badal asserted in her letter that such incidents had caused distress within the Sikh community as they contravened the rights of Sikhs to practice their faith besides raising serious concerns about the protection of religious freedom for minorities in the UAE. "The Sikh community has always contributed positively to societies worldwide, including in the UAE, and demand the freedom to practice its faith in accordance with its tenets. "Denying Sikhs the right to wear their five 'kakkars' (Sikh articles of faith worn by baptised Sikhs), particularly the 'kirpan', is a curtailment of religious freedom and contrary to the principles of mutual respect and pluralism that India stands for," she said. The former union minister also requested Jaishankar to consider sending a high-level delegation, including representatives from the National Commission for Minorities and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), to engage with UAE authorities and relevant international agencies and sensitise them about Sikh articles of faith. She asserted that the 'kirpan' was a sacred symbol and an inseparable part of Sikh identity mandated by Sikh tenets since the time of Guru Gobind Singh. "Its significance is spiritual and symbolic, representing the duty to uphold justice and protect the oppressed, and not as a weapon for aggression or harm. The 'kirpan' is worn at all times by 'Amritdhari' Sikhs (initiated Sikhs) as a matter of religious obligation and conscience", she added.
