Tension prevails over likelihood of protest if Akal Takht officiates Gargaj to address Sikh community ahead of Op Blue Star anniversary

CHANDIGARH: As the 41st anniversary of Operation Blue Star approaches on June 6 (Friday), the situation remains tense due to the possibility of the protest at the Akal Takht (Highest Temporal seat of Sikhs).
The officiating Jathedar (High Priest) Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj is likely to address the sikh community on the anniversary.
The Sikh hardliner group Damdami Taksal's chief, Harnam Singh Dhumma, has demanded that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) should stop Gargaj from doing so, as he has not been accepted by the Sikh community as the Jathedar.
Also, Nihang announced that they will not allow it to happen.
Thus, SGPC is worried as it may be challenging to maintain peace during the commemoration. Meanwhile, SGPC is trying to strike a compromise to defuse the issue.
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami had recently visited the headquarters of Taksal at Gurdwara Gurdarshan Parkash at Chowk Mehta village.
A meeting that lasted for over one and a half hours to strike a compromise, assured that the issue would be resolved before the event.
Hoping for an amicable solution, Dhami said that a meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Takshal's chief Dhumma does not want Gargaj to deliver the customary speech on June 6, as various Sikh bodies have not approved his appointment.
"SGPC has never indulged in confrontation with Damdami Taksal. I hope an amicable solution will be worked out before the anniversary,'' he said.
Dhumma, who is now close to the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) following his support to the saffron party's Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra last November, has been reiterating that if Gargaj addresses the gathering, it will vitiate the atmosphere.
He added that they do not want any clash during the event and are fully ready to cooperate with the SGPC.
However, he said that they have been appealing that SGPC should appoint a Jathedar who is approved by the community and highlighted that the Gargaj is not approved by everyone.
"If a conflicting situation arises on that occasion, the responsibility will lie with the president of the SGPC,' he asserted.

Indian Truck Driver's Fatal U-Turn Sparks Team Trump vs California Governor

The violent crash in Florida, which killed three people, has become the latest flashpoint between the Donald Trump administration and California Governor Gavin Newsom. A semi-truck driver, an illegal immigrant, attempted an illegal U-turn on the Florida turnpike, resulting in the trailer jackknifing and colliding with a minivan. It turns out the Sikh man, identified as Harjinder Singh from India, was issued a commercial driver's license by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), despite his illegal status. The finding gave ammunition to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which posted on X, "How many more innocent people have to die before Gavin Newsom stops playing games with the safety of the American public?" Three innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom's California DMV issued an illegal alien a Commercial Driver's License—this state of governance is asinine. How many more innocent people have to die before Gavin Newsom stops playing games with the safety of the… — Homeland Security (@DHSgov) August 18, 2025 DHS is working around the clock to protect the public and get these criminal illegal aliens out of America, it said. However, Mr Newsom's Press office claimed that when Mr Singh entered the US, Mr Trump was the president. . @grok, who was President in 2018? — Governor Newsom Press Office (@GovPressOffice) August 17, 2025 Under California's law, one gets a commercial driver's license only when they have a lawful presence in the country, his office said. Mr Singh allegedly crossed the California border illegally in September 2018 and was arrested by Border Patrol. He was then processed for fast-track deportation, but he "claimed fear of going back to India", after which he was released on a $5,000 immigration bond in January 2019 after being given a Notice to Appear. The man has remained in immigration proceedings ever since. "The illegal alien is an Indian national who was granted a commercial driver's license by the so-called 'sanctuary state' of California, whose reckless policies put the lives of American citizens at risk every single day," said the White House in a statement. Attacking Mr Newsom, who has in past clashed with the US President, the White House said, "But instead of acknowledging the tragedy, criminal illegal alien sympathiser Gavin Newsom callously doubled down, claiming that giving driver's licenses to illegals 'improves public safety'." According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the semi-truck, which was towing a box trailer, was in the outer lane when it tried to do a U-turn into a section of the turnpike designated as "official use only." According to the agency, the minivan, in the inside lane, was "unable to avoid" the semi tractor-trailer as it crossed "over all northbound travel lanes" to make the U-turn on the access road. The minivan crashed into the trailer and became jammed beneath its left side. Mr Singh was arrested by US Marshals in California on Saturday on a warrant for three counts of vehicular homicide, and he is now facing deportation. Mr Trump and Mr Newsom have clashed on multiple issues in past, including immigration and economic strategies. They have feuded several times on public platforms as well.

'Vicious racist attack on two Sikh elderly men in Wolverhampton': Sikh Federation strongly condemns incident, questions UK govt

Sikh Federation, the UK-based Sikh rights body Monday condemned the alleged racist attack on two Sikh elderly men in Wolverhampton. An alleged video from Wolverhampton has gone viral showing two elderly Sikh men being assaulted in broad daylight. One of the victims can be seen without his turban laying on the floor, while another is being kicked and punched. According to media reports, the British Transport Police arrested three teenagers for the racial attack. The body said that they have spoken to both victims and their families following the attack last Friday at around 2 pm by a group of young white men outside Wolverhampton train station. 'The elderly gentlemen, both local taxi drivers, were on duty outside the station, while working for a local taxi firm. A group of three white men exited the station and approached one of the drivers and demanded he take them to Oldbury. One of the drivers told us they were very rude and abusive and ordered him to take them. He explained that the system does not work this way and that they would have to go into the taxi rank and book from there. But they were not interested or listening, instead they continued with their swearing and abuse. They used the P word and laughed, before walking away. The group then returned after being told the same by other drivers and were a lot more aggressive and abusive towards the driver. There was a barrage of racist abuse using the P word accusing him of only taking P customers,' said the UK body in a statement. 'They then stepped to his face and started pushing him and within seconds he was being assaulted and punched in the face. His dastaar (turban) was removed while he was being punched and attacked from all sides by the three men and he fell to the floor as the attack continued. When a colleague who was also a friend who is in his 70s tried to stop them and come to his aid the group turned on him and brutally attacked him. He has several broken ribs, is heavily bruised, having difficulty breathing and is in pain. Both victims have been living and working in the UK for over 30 years, and never experienced such a violent and scary attack. The assault only stopped when members of the public intervened and shouted at them to stop as they recorded the whole thing. We understand all three men were arrested and detained by police, before being released on bail on Saturday,' said the Sikh Federation. I strongly condemn the horrific attack on two elderly Sikh men in Wolverhampton, UK, during the course of which one Sikh's turban was removed forcibly. ▪️This racist hate crime targets the Sikh community, which always seeks Sarbat Da Bhala (the well-being of all). ▪️Known for… — Sukhbir Singh Badal (@officeofssbadal) August 18, 2025 'What is shocking is despite having many who witnessed the attacks as well as CCTV footage and taking the attackers into custody, the police officers only reached out to speak to the victims more than 48 hours after the attack as the video of the attack went viral. They were told due to limited resources their statements would be taken later today. No one from victim support has been in contact despite such a brutal attack,' added the statement. 'There has been a worrying increase in Anti-Sikh hate crimes across the UK since Labour came to power. What is most concerning is that recent incidents have targeted those that are most vulnerable in the community, either young children or elders. Furthermore, these crimes and attacks are being carried out in public places and during the daytime,' said Sikh Federation in a statement. Dabinderjit Singh, the Lead Executive for Political Engagement at the Sikh Federation (UK) said: 'Keir Starmer in his efforts to appeal to Reform UK voters needs to accept he has unwittingly unleashed a level of hate with his irresponsible 'island of strangers' immigration speech. This also appears to be preventing him and the Labour government delivering on their specific promise before the General Election to treat Anti-Sikh hate on a par with Antisemitism and Islamophobia.' Jas Singh, Principal Advisor to the Sikh Federation (UK) said: 'These two elderly men have been left seriously injured and traumatised by this attack, with no support and limited follow up from the authorities or police. It is unacceptable that the follow up yesterday only came after the video of the attack went viral. This incident must be treated as a religious and racially aggravated hate crime, as this is exactly what it is. A brutal racist attack by three young men on two elderly Sikh taxi drivers without any provocation. The UK Government, especially after Keir Starmer's reference to 'island of strangers' immigration speech needs to urgently address Anti-Sikh hate and act upon the recommendations nearly 5 years ago by the All Party Parliamentary Group for British Sikhs.'

‘Kripan' curbs at PM's I-Day event: BJP Sikh leader fights for Punjab sarpanch's rights

A Punjab sarpanch, denied entry to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's event at Red Fort on Independence Day for carrying the sacred 'kripan', got support on Monday from Sikh BJP leader R.P. Singh, who described the episode as a 'violation of constitutional rights.' The BJP National Spokesperson took up cudgels on behalf of Sarpanch Sardar Gurdhyan Singh of village Kalsana (Nabha, Punjab), regretting that the latter was stopped from attending the Independence Day event despite his valid official invitation (Letter No. 499 issued by the Government of India). On Monday, R.P. Singh, a former Delhi MLA, met Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range), Delhi, to submit a formal representation against ACP Shashi Kant Gaur, who allegedly stopped the village headman from Punjab from proceeding towards the seating area. In his representation, R.P. Singh highlighted that the Sarpanch was denied entry solely because he was carrying the Sri Sahib (Kirpan), a sacred article of Sikh faith inseparable from Sikh identity and constitutionally protected under Article 25. He said this was a violation of constitutional rights, as upheld by the Supreme Court in Balwant Singh versus State of Rajasthan (2006), and amounted to both an insult to the Sikh community and an act of dereliction of duty, bringing disrepute to Delhi Police. During the meeting, Joint CP Madhur Verma spoke to Sarpanch Gurdhyan Singh in a video call and expressed regret over the incident. Verma confirmed that an enquiry will be conducted in this episode. He also invited the Sarpanch for a personal meeting, reaffirming goodwill and respect. After the meeting with the Joint CP, R.P. Singh welcomed the gesture by the Delhi Police leadership while stressing that strict instructions must be issued to prevent recurrence of such a lapse infringing the constitutional and religious rights of the Sikh community.
