‘Is It Happening?': Trump's Tariffs Bring Uncertainty to Beaujolais

New York Times08-08-2025
Few wine regions are as quietly beautiful as Beaujolais, where the rolling green hills are punctuated by small, pretty towns, the sort where businesses still close for lunch from noon to 3 p.m., and window boxes are bright with colorful fresh flowers.
Wine is the primary business, and the main reason the towns still have butchers, bakers and other institutions that have gone missing in many hollowed-out communities throughout rural France.
Vineyards, naturally, dominate the hillsides. Most are divided into plots that are part of small, family estates tended by vignerons who farm the grapes and make the wines.
Beaujolais has come a long way since the days of Beaujolais Nouveau in the last quarter of the 20th century, when big négociants controlled the business and Beaujolais was thought to be no more than a cheerful, lighthearted drink.
Today, the region is full of young, energetic, quality-minded vignerons, some new to the area, while others come from families who have farmed the gamay grapes for generations. The wines are better than ever. You can still find the joyous thirst-quenching styles that many believe define the region, but it's just as easy to find complex expressions of Beaujolais's many different terroirs, the sorts of wines that have changed minds about the area's potential.

FuboTV Strengthens Premium Sports Lineup With NFL, UEFA, And Ligue 1 In Key Global Markets

FuboTV (NYSE:FUBO) deepened its sports-first strategy on Monday, announcing a multi-year content partnership with DAZN in Canada and a separate carriage deal in France through its Molotov subsidiary. The agreements expand Fubo's live sports lineup with marquee rights like the NFL, UEFA Champions League, and Ligue 1, strengthening its global positioning in premium sports streaming. FuboTV and DAZN announced on Monday that they signed a multi-year partnership to expand their collaboration in agreement builds on their recent U.S. distribution deal and aims to deliver one of the most comprehensive sports lineups available to Canadian fans. Under the deal, DAZN will add Fubo Sports Network to its Canadian platform. At the same time, Fubo will stream DAZN's premium live sports, including exclusive rights to the NFL, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, English Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, top boxing events, and more. DAZN subscribers in Canada can bundle Fubo Sports Network with their DAZN plan. In contrast, Fubo subscribers can purchase DAZN content as a standalone service or as part of Fubo's robust subscription packages. The partnership also brings DAZN Ringside, its 24/7 boxing channel, into Fubo's Canadian lineup at no additional cost, enhancing value for subscribers. Separately, FuboTV announced that its French subsidiary, Molotov, signed a non-exclusive carriage deal with Ligue 1 for the 2025/2026 season. The agreement brings Ligue 1+, the official broadcast service of France's top professional soccer league, to Molotov subscribers and strengthens the platform's sports-first positioning in France. Through the partnership, Molotov customers can stream eight of the nine Ligue 1 McDonald's matches live each gameday, with the ninth available on delay, alongside exclusive programming such as shows, replays, documentaries, and club-focused content. The deal supports Molotov's strategy to integrate premium sports into its broad entertainment ecosystem. As the only platform in France to offer both a comprehensive library of national television channels and Ligue 1, McDonald's, and Molotov now pairs elite soccer with global competitions like the FIFA World Cup 2026 and Coupe de France through its carriage of TF1, M6, France TV, and more. FuboTV stock gained over 191% year-to-date. The stock rose on August 8 on strong second-quarter 2025 earnings before reversing to trade 1% lower. Revenue fell 2.8% to $379.97 million, topping estimates, while adjusted EPS of 5 cents beat forecasts for a loss. North America streaming revenue dropped 3% to $371.3 million as paid subscribers slid 6.5% to 1.36 million, though still above preliminary guidance. Globally, revenue rose 4.7% to $8.7 million, with subscribers down 12.5% to 349,000. The company filed a proxy seeking approval to merge with Disney's Hulu + Live TV. Fubo plans to launch Fubo Sports and a Pay-Per-View option soon, while continuing to enhance its platform with features like Catch Up to Live and Game Highlights. Italy's Key Yield Nears France as Traders Rethink European Risk

(Bloomberg) -- The once-yawning gap between Italian and French benchmark borrowing costs shrunk to below 10 basis points, reflecting a shift in how investors rank European government debt. Less than three years ago, Italian 10-year bond yields were nearly 200 basis points more than the equivalent French rate. That difference has since plunged to the narrowest since 2005. Yields on shorter-dated Italian bonds have already fallen below those on French peers. The US-Canadian Road Safety Gap Is Getting Wider A Photographer's Pipe Dream: Capturing New York's Vast Water System Festivals and Parades Are Canceled Amid US Immigration Anxiety A London Apartment Tower With Echoes of Victorian Rail and Ancient Rome Princeton Plans New Budget Cuts as Pressure From Trump Builds Strategists at Commerzbank AG last month forecast that the 10-year gap will close completely. If that happens, it would be the first time since the two yields have traded in line since 1998, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The narrowing spread shows the long-standing demarcation between the 'risky' periphery and 'safe' core has become increasingly blurred. For years, Italian bonds offered a juicy pick-up to peers because investors demanded higher compensation for a tumultuous political backdrop and mountain of government debt. But Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has ushered in an era of stability in Rome and efforts to consolidate debt are underway. In contrast, French debt was swept up in a rout last year after President Emmanuel Macron's snap elections threw a spotlight on the country's large fiscal deficit. While the bonds have since partly recovered, yields have settled at a higher level relative to peers than in the past. The move came as European bonds rose on Monday, paring a selloff from last week. Yields on 30-year German bonds fell as much as six basis points to 3.29%, while yields on the two-year tenor fell as much as two basis points to 1.96%. Italy's spread to other European nations, notably Germany, has long been an obsession for Meloni, guiding her decision-making on a wide range of issues, including banking and defense. Her approach has been shaped by the experience of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi in 2011, who was ousted after spreads spiraled during the European sovereign debt crisis. Meloni now guides Italy's fourth-longest government since it became a republic, adding to a sense of stability that previous governments had difficulty projecting. Though growth remains sclerotic and is seen below 1% of output in 2025, investors have placed a big premium on her perceived ability to govern with a sizable and stable majority. --With assistance from Alice Atkins and Donato Paolo Mancini.
