Swiatek rallies past McNally in Wimbledon Round 2

Swiatek rallies past McNally in Wimbledon Round 2

London, July 3 (UNI) Poland's Iga Swiatek dug deep to defeat American Caty McNally 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in a compelling second-round battle on Centre Court here today, extending her remarkable record at Grand Slam events.
The No. 8 seed and five-time major champion rallied from a set down to secure the hard-fought win in 2 hours and 25 minutes. With the victory, Swiatek advanced to the third round at a Grand Slam for the 22nd consecutive time, joining the elite company of Serena Williams and Amelie Mauresmo as the only players this century to achieve the feat.
Swiatek, who has never exited a Slam before the third round since the 2019 US Open, improved her record in Grand Slam second-round matches to 23 wins and just two losses. Despite her dominance at the majors, Wimbledon remains the only Slam where she is yet to go beyond the quarterfinals, having made her best run to that stage in 2023.
Roday's encounter rekindled a rivalry dating back to the juniors, where Swiatek and McNally once teamed up to win the 2018 Junior French Open doubles title. McNally had also defeated Swiatek in the singles semifinals of that tournament.
This match marked only their second meeting on the professional tour, with Swiatek once again prevailing — though not without a scare. McNally showcased grit and aggressive net play to take the first set, but Swiatek adjusted her rhythm and began to dominate the longer rallies, racing through the final two sets.
In the third round, Swiatek will face another American, Danielle Collins. Although Swiatek holds a 7-2 head-to-head advantage over the former Top 10 player, Collins won their most recent meeting in Rome earlier this year and also famously beat Swiatek in the 2022 Australian Open semifinals.
As Swiatek eyes a deeper run on the Wimbledon lawns, all eyes will be on whether the former World No. 1 can surpass her quarterfinal finish from last year and finally mount a serious title challenge on grass. UNI BDN SSP

Aryna storms into next round

London: Aryna Sabalenka joked that she'd love it if the upsets at Wimbledon would stop, which makes sense, given that she is ranked No. 1. She's also the only one of the five top-seeded women still in the bracket after No. 4 Jasmine Paolini, last year's runner-up, followed No. 2 Coco Gauff, No. 3 Jessica Pegula and No. 5 Zheng Qinwen on the way out. Sabalenka was two points from dropping the opening set of her second-round match three times on Wednesday before asserting herself for a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Marie Bouzkova. In all, a record-tying 23 seeded players — 10 women, 13 men — were gone by the end of Day 2, equaling the most at any Grand Slam event in the past 25 years. Five more women joined them by losing Wednesday: Paolini, No. 12 Diana Shnaider, No. 21 Beatriz Haddad Maia, No. 22 Donna Vekic and No. 29 Leylah Fernandez. 'Of course you're going to know the overall picture,' Sabalenka said, then added with a chuckle: 'I hope it's no upsets anymore in this tournament, if you know what I mean.' She is a three-time Grand Slam champion, with all of those titles coming on hard courts at the Australian Open or U.S. Open. She also was the runner-up to Gauff at the clay-court French Open last month — drawing criticism from some over her post-match comments, a flap she and Gauff set aside via social media videos last week — but hasn't been past the semifinals on the grass of the All England Club. A year ago, Sabalenka was forced to miss Wimbledon because of an injured shoulder. The record-breaking heat of the first two days gave way to rain that delayed the start of play on smaller courts for about two hours, along with temperatures that dropped from above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) to below 68 F (20 C). At Centre Court, the 48th-ranked Bouzkova went ahead 6-5 in the first set with the match's initial service break thanks to a double-fault by Sabalenka. Bouzkova served for that set, and was two points away from it at 30-15 in that game, again at 30-all, then once more at deuce.

BTS' SUGA investing in MLB team after taking over basketball? All we know about plans for The Athletics involvement

BTS' SUGA is branching out beyond music, this time into the world of professional baseball. According to a July 4 report, the K-pop star is joining forces with Korean baseball legend Park Chan Ho. The duo is part of a major investment in the Major League Baseball (MLB) team, The Athletics. The team is currently in the process of relocating from Oakland to Las Vegas. Back in April 2023, the NBA officially named SUGA as a new ambassador for the remainder of the 2022/23 season. He's always known for his long-standing love of basketball. Now, it seems he's taking his passion for sports even further. The unexpected partnership has caught both sports and entertainment industries by surprise. It signals a bold new chapter for SUGA as he takes on a behind-the-scenes role in one of America's most historic baseball franchises. Investing in the future of Las Vegas baseball The Athletics, once based in Oakland since 1968, recently broke ground on a brand-new stadium in Las Vegas. It is set to open by 2028. The total construction cost is projected at 1.75 billion USD. The team is actively working to secure funding through new shareholders and private equity investment. Enter Team 61, a sports management agency founded by Park Chan Ho, the first South Korean to play in the MLB. The agency is reportedly leading a 70 million USD investment into The Athletics' stadium development by setting up a private equity fund. This fund will purchase around 2–3% of newly issued shares in the team. SUGA among star-studded list of investors Joining Park Chan Ho as co-investors are several high-profile names, including: SUGA (BTS) Lee Man Deuk, President of Samchully Co., Ltd. Mike Joo, COO of Bank of America Merrill Lynch's investment division This marks a rare crossover between global K-pop fame and American professional sports. It positions SUGA as one of the few Korean entertainers with a financial stake in a U.S. sports franchise. A new image for The Athletics? Despite its legacy, with 9 World Series titles since its founding in 1901, The Athletics has struggled in recent years. The team has faced challenges both competitively and financially. The move to Las Vegas is seen as a much-needed reset. And with it, comes a new roster of influential backers hoping to restore the team's image and relevance. Park Chan Ho's involvement has already raised hopes for potential Korean talent recruitment in the MLB. Meanwhile, SUGA's global star power could pave the way for international fan engagement and brand collaborations. What's next for SUGA and The Athletics? Neither SUGA nor Park Chan Ho have officially commented on their roles as investors. But fans and industry watchers are buzzing with speculation. Could this lead to K-pop-themed promotions, or even sports-culture crossover content? Will Park play a hands-on role in team strategy or scouting? With music charts conquered and world tours under his belt, SUGA is now stepping onto an entirely different field. And the pitch is just getting started!

Wimbledon: 'Remixed' doubles spurs the imagination

Emma Raducanu and Caros Alcaraz LONDON: The US Open's reimagined mixed-doubles competition — offering $1 million winner's prize — may be sparking romantic vibes, courtesy the Emma Raducanu-Carlos Alcaraz partnership, but is there even a shred of truth to it? Raducanu, 22, gets asked about it in press at Wimbledon, where she's in the third round, and there are almost life-size caricatures of the Briton and the Spaniard up at the Village, at SW19. Tennis is manifesting it seems. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Alcaraz's 'I asked Emma' declaration may have fuelled the rumours. Raducanu, who won the US Open as an 18-year-old in 2021, and Alcaraz, who won the first of his five majors in New York aged 19, go back a long time. Poll Do you think Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz make a good mixed-doubles team? Yes, they complement each other well No, they should stick to singles Undecided I don't follow mixed doubles The Spaniard lent to the moment when he called his partner 'the boss ', saying she could play the match and he would basically fill in wherever he was needed to. Raducanu was quick to come back with a question of her own, 'I would like to know how much of the court he can cover in New York?' 'I'm just gonna serve and I'm gonna pull myself away and let her play,' Alcaraz said. An ambitious journalist even tossed the dating question at Raducanu. 'We're just good friends,' she responded, smiling. While the romance rumours may be good for the event, it is as clear as the London summer sky that the pairings — for most of the 16 teams in the event — have been engineered by the organizers. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who is teaming up with Emma Navarro, spoke to the American for the first time at Wimbledon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... We never talked, we never texted. It's actually a funny story,' he said, 'The tournament wanted us to kind of play together because certain teams were already set up.' The 23-year-old added: 'I'm very happy to play with Emma. I told her already, don't get pissed with me if I miss volleys. Doubles, I struggle.' Navarro, Wimbledon's 10th seed, joined in the fun during a television interview, saying, 'He (Sinner) was begging me to play. I said, 'Yeah sure. I guess I'll play with you. You're not the best player, but I'll make an exception and try to get a better partner next year!' There may be a breakup, though, that could throw a spanner in the works for the US Open. If Greek media is to be believed, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa are no longer a couple. The break-up is believed to have happened at Wimbledon. Greek Tsitsipas and Spanish Badosa have done all the things people who breakup in the era of social media do — unfollow each other and delete all their pictures together.
