Dahlmeier injured in Karakoram mountaineering accident

Lahore, July 29 (UNI) Two-time Olympic gold medallist and former German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier has been seriously injured in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range, her management confirmed today. According to a statement, the 31-year-old was climbing with a partner on Sunday, July 28, when she was caught in a rockfall at an altitude of approximately 5,700 metres. The accident occurred around noon local time. "Her partner immediately alerted emergency services, and a rescue operation began. However, due to the remoteness of the location, a helicopter was only able to reach the site on the morning of July 29," the statement said. An international rescue operation is currently underway, with no further details yet released on her condition. Dahlmeier, who retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25, was a standout athlete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, where she clinched gold in the 7.5km sprint and 10km pursuit, along with a bronze in the 15km individual event. In addition to her Olympic success, she has won 15 World Championship medals, including seven golds, making her one of Germany's most decorated winter sports athletes. Further updates are awaited as the rescue effort progresses. UNI BDN SSP

Macau, July 29 (UNI) Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty breezed into the men's doubles pre-quarterfinals at the Macau Open 2025 badminton tournament with a straight-games win here today. Competing at the Macao East Asian Games Dome in Macau, China, the Indian pair dispatched Malaysia's Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong 21-13, 21-15 in a dominant performance. However, it was a mixed day for India in women's doubles. Top seeds and Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand suffered a shock first-round exit, going down 16-21, 22-20, 21-15 to the unseeded Chinese Taipei duo of Lin Xiao-Min and Peng Yu-Wei. Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra kept Indian hopes alive by edging past Chinese Taipei's Ling Zih Huang and Wang Szu-Min 21-15, 16-21, 21-17 in a tightly-contested clash that lasted one hour and nine minutes. In contrast, Apoorva and Sakshi Gahlawat were ousted after a 21-8, 21-11 defeat to Malaysia's Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing. In the women's singles qualification rounds, teenage shuttlers Anmol Kharb and Tasnim Mir booked berths in the main draw. Kharb registered a commanding 21-11, 21-13 win over Azerbaijan's Keisha Fatimah Azzahra, setting up a tough opener against Thailand's second seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Tasnim Mir came through a gritty 21-14, 13-21, 21-17 victory against Thailand's Tidapron Kleebyeesun to earn a first-round clash with world No. 5 and top seed Chen Yufei of China. Meanwhile, no Indian player made it through the men's singles qualification draw. But in men's doubles, Dingku Singh Konthoujam and Amaan Mohammad advanced with a 21-18, 21-17 win over Hong Kong China's Law Cheuk Him and Yeung Shing Choi. Rishabh Pant back in the middle as India reach 321/6 at lunch

Manchester, July 24 (UNI) India added 57 runs to their overnight score on a rain-hit second morning to reach 321 for 6 at lunch in the Old Trafford Test against England today with Rishabh Pant batting on 39 after returning to the crease post a brief injury scare. Giviing Pant company in the middle is Washington Sundar on 20. Starting the day at 264/4, India lost Ravindra Jadeja early when he edged Jofra Archer to Brook at second slip for 20. Archer, bowling with discipline and venom despite a modest pace, continued troubling Indian batsmen with movement off the seam. Shardul Thakur, resuming on 19, stood tall under pressure. He counter-punched the English attack with a gritty 41 off 88 balls, including five boundaries. A dramatic sequence unfolded in the 11th over of the day when England lost a review after believing Thakur gloved a rising delivery to the keeper, only for replays to show it clipped his shoulder. Unfazed, Thakur responded with a boundary the very next ball. However, in the 102nd over, Thakur fell to Ben Stokes, edging an outswinger to Ben Duckett at gully, who took a superb low catch. Thakur's dismissal left India at 314/6, but the attention quickly turned to the return of Rishabh Pant, who had retired hurt yesterday after reaching 37. He walked back to the middle amidst applause, partnering Sundar through to lunch. The Indian innings was briefly interrupted by rain just ahead of the lunch interval. Earlier in the session, England had taken the second new ball at the start of play (83.1 overs), but the bowlers failed to make full use of the fresh cherry as India crossed the 300-run mark. With Pant batting and Sundar providing solid support, India will hope to stretch the total further into the second session. UNI BDN SSP

Sinner eases past Shelton into Wimbledon semifinals

London, July 9 (UNI) World No.1 Jannik Sinner delivered a composed and commanding performance to advance to the semifinals of Wimbledon 2025, defeating 10th-seeded American Ben Shelton 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4 on Court 1 here today. This marks the 22-year-old Italian's second trip to the Wimbledon last-four, having first reached this stage in 2023. Showcasing his trademark poise and tactical sharpness, Sinner neutralised Shelton's explosive serve and attacking game with clean ball-striking, deep returns, and intelligent court positioning. The match was billed as a clash of contrasting styles, Shelton, the flamboyant left-hander known for his raw power and aggressive net play, against the cool, calculated rhythm of Sinner. The American fired 12 aces and frequently surpassed 135 mph on his serve, but Sinner absorbed the heat, rarely flustered, and dictated key moments with surgical precision. The first set unfolded as a tight contest, with neither player facing break points. In the tie-break, Sinner capitalised on a pair of unforced errors from Shelton to take control, clinching it 7-6(4) with calm authority. That breakthrough gave the top seed the momentum. In the second set, Sinner pounced on a loose service game from Shelton at 3-3, converting the lone break with a precise forehand winner down the line. He then served out the set comfortably, never facing a break point. Sinner's own service games were nearly untouchable, he won 85% of his first-serve points and maintained flawless composure throughout the match. The third set followed a similar pattern. A break in the fifth game put him ahead, and he never let go of the lead, closing out the win in just over two hours. Now two wins away from lifting his second career Grand Slam title, after his triumph at the Australian Open earlier this year, Sinner awaits either seven-time champion Novak Djokovic or fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli in the semifinals. Swiatek rallies past McNally in Wimbledon Round 2

London, July 3 (UNI) Poland's Iga Swiatek dug deep to defeat American Caty McNally 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in a compelling second-round battle on Centre Court here today, extending her remarkable record at Grand Slam events. The No. 8 seed and five-time major champion rallied from a set down to secure the hard-fought win in 2 hours and 25 minutes. With the victory, Swiatek advanced to the third round at a Grand Slam for the 22nd consecutive time, joining the elite company of Serena Williams and Amelie Mauresmo as the only players this century to achieve the feat. Swiatek, who has never exited a Slam before the third round since the 2019 US Open, improved her record in Grand Slam second-round matches to 23 wins and just two losses. Despite her dominance at the majors, Wimbledon remains the only Slam where she is yet to go beyond the quarterfinals, having made her best run to that stage in 2023. Roday's encounter rekindled a rivalry dating back to the juniors, where Swiatek and McNally once teamed up to win the 2018 Junior French Open doubles title. McNally had also defeated Swiatek in the singles semifinals of that tournament. This match marked only their second meeting on the professional tour, with Swiatek once again prevailing — though not without a scare. McNally showcased grit and aggressive net play to take the first set, but Swiatek adjusted her rhythm and began to dominate the longer rallies, racing through the final two sets. In the third round, Swiatek will face another American, Danielle Collins. Although Swiatek holds a 7-2 head-to-head advantage over the former Top 10 player, Collins won their most recent meeting in Rome earlier this year and also famously beat Swiatek in the 2022 Australian Open semifinals. As Swiatek eyes a deeper run on the Wimbledon lawns, all eyes will be on whether the former World No. 1 can surpass her quarterfinal finish from last year and finally mount a serious title challenge on grass.
