Paul makes history with QF berth at Roland Garros
Paris, June 1 (UNI) American No.12 seed Tommy Paul became the first player to book a place in the quarterfinals of Roland-Garros 2025 with a commanding 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Australia's Alexei Popyrin. The match lasted just under two hours on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, where Paul displayed composed aggression and consistency from the baseline. This is the 27-year-old's best showing in seven attempts at the French Open. The win is also a major moment for American tennis — Paul is the first American man to reach the French Open quarterfinals since Andre Agassi in 2003. Paul earlier reached the last eight at Wimbledon in 2024 and the Australian Open earlier this year. Paul controlled the match from start to finish, hitting 26 winners and breaking Popyrin's serve five times. The Australian, who had not dropped a set prior to this match, struggled to match Paul's depth and foot speed throughout the contest. The American has made steady progress in recent years, breaking into the top 15 in the world rankings. His coach, Brad Stine, has spoken of Paul's hunger to achieve more, highlighting the potential for him to win a Masters 1000 title or even a Grand Slam. Paul now awaits the winner of the high-profile clash between defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and No.13 seed Ben Shelton later tonight on Court Philippe-Chatrier. A win in the next round would make Paul just the third American man in the past 20 years to reach a Grand Slam semifinal on clay, signalling a revival of American hopes at Roland-Garros. Girls now carry trishuls to resist Love Jihad: Muthalik
Hubballi, Jun 1 (UNI) Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik has claimed that 'every girl now carries a trishul in her bag' as a symbolic measure to resist what he described as Love Jihad—a term used by some groups to allege coercive interfaith relationships leading to religious conversion. Speaking at an event in Hubballi marking the first anniversary of the helpline Sahaya Vani, Muthalik said the service had received 6,158 calls over the past year, involving cases where young women were allegedly being misled or coerced in the name of love. 'We have been able to intervene in 93 per cent of these cases and prevent the girls from falling into such traps,' he told reporters in a press meet. Muthalik also alleged that some of the cases involved attempt to impose different cultural and religious practices on the women. 'They were forced to wear the burkha, prohibited from worshipping their family deities, and even made to consume beef against their customs,' he alleged. 'Our teams have worked day and night to support affected families. This helpline has become a success,' he added. Issuing a warning to those allegedly involved in such activities, Muthalik said, 'We have now given a clear message. Every girl carries a trishul in her bag. If anyone attempts Love Jihad, the answer will come from that very trishul.' He also called upon all social and religious organisations to extend full support—'in body, mind, and resources'—to protect young women and raise awareness. Muthalik said leaders from various castes and communities were present at the event and had expressed solidarity with the initiative. The term Love Jihad remains controversial and is not legally defined. While some right-wing groups claim it is part of a larger conspiracy, investigations by central agencies have found no evidence of any organised network involved in religious conversions through romantic relationships. Muthalik's remarks are expected to draw sharp reactions from civil society organisations and political parties, which have often cautioned against statements that could inflame social tensions. Bopanna-Pavlasek prevail after hard-fought win
Paris, May 28 (UNI) India's Rohan Bopanna and Czech partner Adam Pavlasek edged past the American pair of Robert Cash and James Tracy in a gripping first-round men's doubles encounter on Court 5 here on Wednesday. The Indo-Czech duo prevailed 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 in a match that saw momentum swing back and forth before Bopanna and Pavlasek stamped their authority in the deciding set to seal victory in just under two hours. The contest began on even footing with both teams holding serve throughout the opening set. Bopanna and Pavlasek held their nerve in the tiebreak, clinching it 8-6 to go one set up. However, the American team of Cash and Tracy came roaring back, breaking serve at a crucial juncture in the second set to take it 7-5. With the match poised at one set all, Bopanna and Pavlasek lifted their game, racing to a five-game lead in the third. Despite a spirited effort from the Americans, the Indo-Czech pair closed out the decider 6-1 with commanding returns and consistent net play. Statistically, both teams recorded three aces each, but it was the winners who capitalised on break points, converting four of 14 opportunities compared to the Americans' two of three. Bopanna and Pavlasek won 71 per cent of their second serve points and captured 44 receiving points overall, which proved decisive in the end. The victory sees Bopanna and Pavlasek advance to the second round, where they will aim to continue their strong run in the tournament. UNI BDN SSP

Swiatek crushes Raducanu after tough year
Paris, May 28 (UNI) Iga Swiatek silenced any doubts about her form and focus with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 demolition of Britain's Emma Raducanu on Wednesday, extending her unbeaten streak at the French Open to 23 matches and making a resounding statement after a turbulent year on and off the court. The World No.5, playing under her lowest Grand Slam seeding since 2022, showed no signs of rust on Court Philippe-Chatrier as she delivered a performance worthy of her title as the "Queen of Clay." The dominant win comes on the back of a challenging year that included a one-month suspension for a doping violation and the personal loss of her grandfather ahead of the Madrid Masters. Despite not having reached a final since last year's triumph in Paris, Swiatek appeared firmly in control from the outset, brushing aside the British No.2 in just 79 minutes to book her place in the third round for the seventh consecutive year. Raducanu, currently ranked 41 in the world and making only her second French Open appearance since debuting in 2022, showed flashes of aggression early on but failed to capitalise on four break point chances. She has now lost all five meetings against Swiatek without claiming a set. Swiatek struck 31 winners to Raducanu's eight and converted four breaks of serve while saving all break points against her. The gap in class and consistency was evident throughout, with the Polish star sealing the first set in 35 minutes with an ace and continuing to dominate the second with powerful groundstrokes and relentless pressure. Raducanu, who missed last year's edition due to injury, now exits in the second round again, continuing her search for stability on clay. For Swiatek, however, the win was about far more than progression to the next round — it was a reminder to the field that, despite personal trials and a recent drop in ranking, she remains the standard-bearer at Roland Garros. With four titles already to her name in Paris, the 22-year-old looks poised for a fifth as she rediscovers the form and fire that once made her nearly untouchable on red dirt. UNI BDN SSP

India won't stay silent on Pak proxy war: Surya
Panama, May 28 (UNI) India today sent a strong and unequivocal message to the world that it stands united on matters of national security and will no longer tolerate aggression or attempts to destabilise the nation, said Tejasvi Surya, BJP MP from Karnataka. Addressing a delegation comprising representatives from diverse states and political parties, Surya emphasised that despite India's rich diversity in languages, religions, and cultures, the country speaks with one voice when it comes to safeguarding its sovereignty. "This is the foremost message India wants to convey internationally — on national security, we are united and resolute," Surya said. The all-party delegation led by Shashi Tharoor has arrived in Panama City for a three-day official visit, following the conclusion of their trip to Guyana. During their stay, the MPs will engage with Panamanian leadership as well as key representatives from the media, strategic sectors, the Indian community and diaspora, and friends of India in Panama, according to a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Panama. Surya stressed that India's primary mission remains to achieve collective, inclusive prosperity and improve the living standards of its people while rapidly emerging as the world's third largest economy. However, Pakistan continues to pose a persistent threat through its policy of proxy warfare aimed at distracting and destabilising India. "For over 70 years, Pakistan has pursued a strategy of 'bleeding India by a thousand cuts,' seeking to hinder our growth and progress," Surya said. Despite these challenges, India has emerged as the world's fourth largest economy and is firmly on the path of rapid development. The BJP leader reiterated that India will not remain silent in the face of attacks. 'The days of passivity are over. If provoked, India will respond decisively, including through operations beyond our borders if necessary, to protect our national interests,' he declared. Surya's remarks echoed the firm stance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring India's readiness to defend its sovereignty and maintain regional peace. UNI BDN SSP
