Maynilad Water Services—controlled by Indonesian billionaire Anthoni Salim-backed Metro Pacific Investment—will raise 38.6 billion pesos ($694 million) from its IPO.
Under the IPO, which was approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, Maynilad Water will sell 1.9 billion shares in a primary offering at 20 pesos apiece. The maiden share sale includes an over allotment option of up to 249 million shares and a preferential offer of up to 24.9 million shares.
Maynilad Water—which provides water utility services to 17 cities and municipalities in western Metro Manila and parts of Cavite province, south of the capital—will use the IPO proceeds to upgrade its facilities and expand its water output.
Apart from the sale of primary shares, Maynilad Water Holding—which counts Metro Pacific, tycoon Isidro Consunji's DMCI Holdings and Japan's Marubeni Corp. among its shareholders—will sell 354.7 million shares at the IPO price, raising an additional 7.1 billion pesos in a secondary offering.
The offer period will run from July 3 to 9, with listing on the main board of the Philippine Stock Exchange scheduled on July 17, the SEC said. It will be the largest Philippine IPO since the listing of instant noodle giant Monde Nissin, which raised $1.1 billion in a maiden share sale in 2021.
BPI Capital, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and UBS are the IPO's joint global coordinators and joint bookrunners, according to the statement.
Maynilad Water's net profit rose 17% to 3.6 billion pesos in the first quarter as sales rose 6% to 8.6 billion pesos. It reported a record full-year net profit of 12.8 billion pesos in 2024.
Metro Pacific, which is helmed by tycoon and CEO Manuel Pangilinan and taken private in 2023, also has interests in hospitals, tollroads, agriculture, as well as electricity generation and distribution.
Outside of Metro Pacific, Salim's First Pacific also has stakes in Philippine telecom giant PLDT and Philex Mining Corp. With a net worth of $12.8 billion, Salim and his family are among the richest in Indonesia. The family also has stakes in Infofood, Indonesia's largest noodle maker, as well as banking, retail and coal mining.Consunji and his siblings had a networth of $3.4 billion, the fifth richest in the Philippines. DMCI, which started as a construction company founded by his father in 1954, has expanded to coal and nickel mining, residential development, power generation and cement manufacturing.

Firefly Aerospace set to debut after largest US space IPO of the year

By Ateev Bhandari and Arasu Kannagi Basil (Reuters) -Firefly Aerospace will begin trading on the Nasdaq on Thursday after raising $868.3 million in the largest U.S. listing this year by a space tech company. Firefly — which became the second private enterprise to achieve a lunar landing five months ago — priced the IPO at $45 per share, above an already upsized range, securing a valuation of $6.32 billion. That is ahead of both Trive Capital-backed Karman Holdings and Voyager Technologies, which went public earlier this year. U.S. initial public offerings have picked up pace after tariff-driven volatility hampered listings in April, reigniting a long-awaited recovery of first-time share sales. "I think we will continue to see strong debuts for large-cap IPOs for the remainder of the year," said Ross Carmel, partner at law firm Sichenzia Ross Ference Carmel. "In the event the Federal Reserve decides to cut interest rates, I think we can see this trickle down to both mid-cap and small-cap IPOs as well." Formed in 2017, Firefly specializes in cost-effective launch vehicles and spacecraft, including lunar landers, to provide space launch and mission services. While Houston-based Intuitive Machines was the first private firm to reach the moon last year, its Odysseus lander made a lopsided touchdown. Firefly's Blue Ghost landed safely on the moon in March. "Firefly has already demonstrated responsive launch capabilities and delivered a lunar payload-proof points that matter to the Space Force and NASA," said Ali Javaheri, emerging technology analyst at PitchBook. The company had a backlog of roughly $1.1 billion and more than 30 planned launches under contract as of March 31. "Investors will likely focus on backlog growth, gross margin trends as production scales, and Firefly's cash runway post-IPO," Javaheri said. The company, however, expects to incur net losses for the next several years, according to filings. SPACE SCRUTINY Rising geopolitical tensions and deteriorating international relations have put a spotlight on space and defense contractors, as U.S. President Donald Trump aims to bolster military and civil space programs with the efficiencies of for-profit companies. Elon Musk's SpaceX — which has about $22 billion in government contracts — has grown critical to the global satellite network, potentially managing a crucial element of the "Golden Dome" missile shield planned by Trump. Musk's latest tensions with Trump, however, have prompted officials to solicit bids from other rocket and tech manufacturers, with some citing national security concerns around concentrated dependency. In early 2022, pressure from certain U.S. government bodies led to Ukrainian entrepreneur Max Polyakov divesting his ownership in Firefly to AE Industrial Partners, which currently owns more than 40% of the Texas-based company. Since then, Firefly has attracted a robust mix of investors. "Northrop Grumman's involvement signals alignment with national security priorities, while Mitsui's presence opens pathways to Asia and helps shore up supply-chain resilience," PitchBook's Javaheri said. U.S. defense contractor Northrop Grumman, which invested $50 million into Firefly in May, is one of the three suppliers of solid rocket motors to the U.S. Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Jefferies and Wells Fargo Securities are the lead underwriters for the IPO.

Asian shares mostly climb after a rally for Apple leads Wall Street higher

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Asian shares mostly advanced and financial markets appeared to show scant if any reaction to higher tariffs on exports to the United States that took effect early Thursday. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 added 0.6% to 41,059.15. Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 0.6% to 25,058.22 and the Shanghai Composite added 0.2% to 3,639.67. China reported that its exports picked up in July, helped by a flurry of shipments by businesses taking advantage of a pause in U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war with Beijing. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.9% to 3,227.68, while the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia shed 0.1% to 8,831.40. India's Sensex gave up 0.5% after Trump ordered tariffs on imports from the world's most populous nation to rise to 50%, citing its crude oil imports from Russia. Trump also declared 100% tariffs on computer chips with an exemption for U.S. investments. Apple's shares rose 5.1% on Wednesday ahead of a White House event where it announced an increase to its U.S. investments of an additional $100 billion over the next four years. Mizuho Bank, in a commentary, said the Trump's exemption from 100% tariffs on semiconductors for those with investments in U.S. production means some U.S. trading partners may be able to use their investments in the U.S. as a bargaining chip. Taiwan's Taiex jumped 2.4% as shares in market heavyweight Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. surged 4.9%. TSMC is the world's largest contract maker of computer chips and it has been ramping up its investments in U.S. factory capacity, helping to alleviate the impact from higher tariffs. South Korean chipmakers also saw strong gains, with Samsung Electronics jumping 2.1% after the government said its products would also be subject to the exemption. On Wednesday, a rally for Apple led Wall Street higher, with U.S. stocks reclaiming more of their sharp losses from last week. The S&P 500 rose 0.7% to 6,345.06. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.2% to 44,193.12, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.2% to 21,169.42. Apple alone accounted for more than a third of the S&P 500's gain. Trading elsewhere on Wall Street was mixed following a jumble of profit reports. McDonald's and Shopify rose following their latest updates, while Super Micro Computer tumbled after its earnings and revenue came in below analysts' expectations. The Walt Disney Co. fell after its earnings beat forecasts but its revenue fell short Worries are still high that Trump's tariffs may be hurting the economy, but hopes for coming cuts to interest rates by the Federal Reserve and a parade of stronger-than-expected profit reports from U.S. companies have helped steady the market. In other dealings early Thursday, benchmark U.S. crude climbed 49 cents to $64.84 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, added 46 cents to $67.34 a barrel. The U.S. dollar slipped to 146.90 Japanese yen from 147.36 yen. The euro cost $1.1677, up from $1.1661.
