Gabe on the Go: Preparing for Pella Tulip Time
Thistles Flower Market, previously known as the Village Florist, was purchased by Alie Muller-Heit last November. She fondly remembers the building that now houses the floral shop as a former soda shop she visited as a child. Now, owning a business in the same building is a full-circle moment for her.
This will be Muller-Heit's first Tulip Time as owner of Thistles Flower Market, and she's bringing several new features to the festival. Thistles has partnered with one of their main providers of tulips, Nunnikhoven Farm, to host a tulip master class. The class will cover information about tulips, such as how to plant, care for, and arrange them. Classes will be held at 10 a.m. at Thistles Flower Market on April 19, April 26, and during Tulip Time (May 1-3). Additional classes will take place during Tulip Time at 11:30 a.m. in Pella's Central Park.

Thistles is home to several varieties of tulips that can't be found in many other places. Those interested are able to view or even order them at PellaTulipBulbs.com. The flower market is also selling Delft pottery from the Netherlands, another rare find.
This year, Thistles is introducing flower carts that will be found all around Pella during Tulip Time. The carts can be located at Central Park, Sunken Gardens Park, and at the Klokkenspel. Customers will find Iowa-made Dutch Letter flavored popcorn, tulips from Nunnikhoven Farm, faux tulips, and candles.

'A celebration 40 years in the making': Iowa Lottery smashes Guinness World Record
Forty years after the Iowa Lottery first kicked off ticket sales at the Iowa State Fair, it's back and better than ever. The Iowa Lottery celebrated the milestone by breaking a Guinness World Record: most people scratching scratch tickets simultaneously. An official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, Michael Empric, was on site at Elwell Family Park to grant the Iowa Lottery's birthday wish: its very own spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Mere minutes after the event's master of ceremonies Jeff Angelo gave scratchers the go-ahead, Empric confirmed that the Iowa Lottery had indeed shattered the previous record — held by Totalizator Sportowy Lotto in Poland. A whopping 1,380 people had participated in the attempt, giving them an 830-person lead over their predecessors. Although there were a few deductions from the total count due to overeager scratchers, they barely made a dent in the sheer magnitude of the record. "This is a celebration 40 years in the making," said Matt Strawn, CEO of the Iowa Lottery. "The first Iowa Lottery ticket was sold at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. I can't think of a better way to celebrate how the lottery has given back." In addition to celebrating the Iowa Lottery's birthday, several attendees had birthdays to celebrate as well. Fitting with Iowa Nice tradition, this led to a lively rendition of "Happy Birthday," which echoed off the metal stadium seating. One couple in the crowd had been present for the sale of the first lottery ticket in Iowa 40 years ago, said Angelo. Now, they were back for the first time to participate in the world record attempt. Everyone who participated in the record attempt received a free 2025 version of the Scratch, Match & Win! game, the very first Iowa Lottery product to be launched at the fair 40 years ago. Scratch, Match & Win! tickets offer prizes up to $50,000. Participants were also entered into a drawing that was held following the record attempt. Prizes for the drawing included two $4,000 winners — Sharon Hulsebus of Cedar Rapids and Anthony Gleichman of Council Bluffs — and one $40,000 winner — Katherine Blank Pierce of Des Moines. "I tell my team all the time, 'We're not a lottery, we're not the lottery, we're the Iowa Lottery,'" said Strawn. "And you can never forget that 'Iowa' part of the Iowa Lottery.
