Caitlin Clark's boyfriend heartbroken over family tragedy: ‘I refuse to say goodbye'
McCaffery posted a tribute to Marit Smaby-Nowlin on Saturday, sharing a photo of him with his grandmother when he was a young boy.
'I've been trying to think of what to say and I can't,' McCaffery wrote in the caption. 'It's impossible to put into words how much you meant to our entire family. I refuse to say goodbye, so until we meet again.'

Smaby-Nowlin, 80, died after she was found unresponsive in Lake Vermilion in northeast Minnesota on Wednesday, according to the Star Tribune.
Family members were attempting to revive Smaby-Nowlin when first responders arrived, according to the report.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office told the Tribune that she died after being transported to Cook Hospital.

She was the mother to four daughters, including Margaret, McCaffery's mom, who was a standout basketball player in St. Paul before playing at Notre Dame.
Margaret married McCaffery's dad, Fran, the longtime Iowa head coach who's now the head coach at the University of Pennsylvania.

Clark, the Indiana Fever star, and McCaffery celebrated their two-year anniversary in April.

The couple met while they were basketball players at Iowa.
McCaffery is currently an assistant coach for the Butler men's basketball program. He worked for the NBA's Pacers as a basketball development coordinator during the 2023-24 season.

He also ran for 380 yards and 10 touchdowns. Back in the 2023 season, his numbers were even bigger. He threw for 3,058 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, while running for 402 yards and eight scores. With that being said, Gronowski has received an interesting comparison before his first year with Iowa. Former Michigan tight end and current Big Ten Network analyst Jake Butt spoke out with his thoughts about Gronowski. He seems a comparison between the Hawkeyes' new quarterback and former Ohio State Buckeyes star signal caller JT Barrett. "Gronowski is clearly the most talented QB they've had. He throws a nice ball as well, but feels more like a JT Barrett comp from my playing days. JT was never the most talented throwing but would get you five when you needed four. He was a playmaker and leader. That's the role I see Gronowski playing," Butt said. That is a very interesting comparison for the Iowa starting quarterback. Caitlin Clark not with Fever in Connecticut today following death of boyfriend's grandmother
Caitlin Clark, who has been sidelined since July 15 with a right groin injury, did not travel with the Indiana Fever for Sunday's game at the Connecticut Sun. A team official declined to comment on any reason, but Clark's boyfriend, Butler assistant coach Connor McCaffery, shared an Instagram post late Saturday night mourning the death of his grandmother, Marit Smaby-Nowlin. 'I've been trying to think of what to say and I can't,' he wrote. 'It's impossible to put into words how much you meant to our entire family. I refuse to say goodbye, so until we meet again.'
