Shooter killing 23 at US Texas Walmart will not face death penalty

Houston, Apr 22 (UNI) Patrick Crusius, the shooter who killed 23 people in a 2019 attack targeting Hispanic migrants at a Walmart in El Paso, U.S. state of Texas, will not face the death penalty after he pleaded guilty in a state court on Monday.
Instead, he was sentenced to 23 consecutive life sentences.
El Paso District Attorney James Montoya's office last month offered Crusius the plea deal to avoid the death penalty.
At the time, Montoya said he personally believed Crusius should be executed but the death penalty would delay a trial even further, noting that most of the victim's families just want the case's closure.
Crusius was sentenced to 90 life terms in 2023 in his federal trial after pleading guilty.
The 2019 attack is one of the deadliest shootings in the United States.

HP court orders attachment of govt property in over 27-yr-old land compensation case

Shimla, June 12 (UNI) Highlighting prolonged government inaction, the district judge (forest) Ajay Mehta has directed the attachment of key government properties, including the PWD rest house at Tara Devi, two official vehicles from the PWD headquarters, furniture, computers, and heaters, over non-payment of land compensation to farmers for the past 27 years. The case pertains to land acquired in 1998 by the Public Works Department (PWD) Rohru division for the construction of the Baidhar-Thana-Tikkar road. Approximately 15 bighas were acquired, including apple orchards, and the land acquisition officer had initially assessed compensation at Rs. 6,252 per apple plant. Unsatisfied with the award, landowners from Tikka -- Diwan Chand, Bhajan Das, Inder Singh, Narain Chand, Bahadur Singh, Nihal Chand, Jagdish, Mohan Chand, Jai Krishan, and Rameshwar -- moved court in 2012. In 2017, the additional district and sessions judge ordered an enhanced compensation of Rs 26,575 per plant. However, the state failed to implement the order or deposit Rs 2.5 crore compensation, prompting the petitioners to file an execution petition in 2020. The court noted that despite three prior orders to attach government property, no action was taken to disburse the compensation. It further observed that both the secretary (PWD secretariat) and the Land Acquisition Officer (Winter Field, Shimla) failed to cooperate with court proceedings. While the state government has now sought an additional four months to deposit the dues, the next hearing has been scheduled for June 18. The court has made it clear that the attachment orders will remain in force until then. In a related matter, a single bench of Justice Ajay Mohan Goel of the Himachal Pradesh High Court recently ordered the attachment of Himachal Bhavan and 18 properties of HPTDC over unpaid arbitration awards and pending dues of retired employees, reflecting a broader trend of judicial strictness over financial defaults by the state. Police arrest Sweta Khan, one of main accused in pornography case

Kolkata, June 11 (UNI) Sweta Khan, the main accused in a disturbing pornographic racket case in West Bengal's Howrah district, was arrested from South Kolkata's upscale Alipore area on Wednesday night. The arrest came just hours after her son Aryan Khan, also an accused in the same case, was apprehended from the Golf Green area in South Kolkata. He is currently in custody at the Domjur Police Station in Howrah, the jurisdiction under which the case was originally registered. According to the police, Sweta Khan's location was traced following the interrogation of Aryan. Both mother and son stand accused of confining and brutally assaulting a young woman from Panihati in North 24 Parganas after she allegedly refused to participate in the filming of pornographic content. The crime came to light when the woman was admitted to a hospital on Friday evening (June 6) with grievous injuries, including trauma to her private parts. The victim in her statement said that she had been held captive for approximately six months in a flat in Domjur, Howrah. During this period, she was denied food for days, had her limbs and even her teeth broken, and was repeatedly beaten with iron rods. On Saturday morning the family members of the woman lodged a complaint at Khardah police station in North 24 Parganas against Aryan and his mother Sweta Khan. Police have been in search of the duo since then. According to her family, the woman had previously worked for an event management company. She met Aryan Khan, who promised her a job with a higher salary, leading her to move to Howrah. Unaware of his intentions, she accepted the offer, only to find herself forcibly confined. After enduring months of physical and psychological torture, she managed to escape and sought help from her family. Incidentally the arrest happened after the National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognizance of the incident. The NCW urged the West Bengal Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, to arrest both the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Additionally, the Commission directed the state authorities to provide the survivor with free medical treatment and psychological counselling. The DGP has also been asked to submit a detailed action taken report within three days. Further investigation revealed that Aryan and Shweta Khan jointly established a production company called 'Isara Entertainment'. The duo launched a YouTube channel under the same name in 2021. However, over the past four years, only 11 music videos have been uploaded, raising serious doubts about the company's true purpose and the possibility of it being a front for illegal activities.
