Sarawak Customs thwart drug smuggling attempt at airport
KUCHING: The Sarawak Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 10.1 kilogrammes (kg) of methamphetamine hidden inside a box of snacks.
Its director, Norizan Yahya, said the drugs, worth about RM347,200, were seized at the Kuching International Airport (LTAK) on April 16.
He said a local man, who had arrived from Kuala Lumpur, was arrested at noon after exhibiting suspicious behaviour in the baggage claim area.
'The suspect was seen retrieving a box from the baggage carousel and then heading to the restroom with it. Officers from the LTAK Special Passenger Inspection Unit (UKPP) proceeded to close in to inspect the person and the box he was carrying.
'The inspection led to the discovery of 10 transparent plastic packages containing substances suspected to be methamphetamine, with a gross weight of 10,136 grammes,' he said in a statement today.
He added that the arrest was a collaboration between the UKPP and the Sarawak JKDM Narcotics Branch.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

MELAKA: What began as a desperate attempt by dozens of private sector workers here to make ends meet turned into a nightmare when an illegal money lender allegedly seized control of their salaries, withholding their hard-earned wages since March last year. Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said police arrested two suspects on Saturday (June 28), believed to be behind the scheme that saw 62 employees forced to survive on piecemeal handouts after deductions for loans and interest. "The licence they claimed to be operating under was registered to a gold and jewellery outlet at a different address in Taman Peringgit Jaya," he said. He added that the police raid on the Taman Merdeka Permai premises was carried out following intelligence gathered by his team. ACP Christopher Patit noted that among the items seized during the operation were 64 automated teller machine (ATM) cards, lease agreements, RM6,200 in cash, 13 mobile phones, and a list containing the names of borrowers. "The victims are wage earners in private companies, aged between 30 and 50 years," he said. ACP Christopher Patit said the suspects confessed to holding on to the victims' ATM cards in order to collect loan repayments, only returning the remainder of the salaries once the amounts owed had been deducted. He said the suspects are currently under remand as investigations continue under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 and Section 424A of the Penal Code, which pertains to the fraudulent retention of proceeds from the disposal of property. "We are also tracking down the main suspect who employed the two," he added.

Four charged with trafficking liquid cocaine

Malaysian Kong Sien Mee, 57, and the three Singaporeans – Quek Kien Seng, 45, Tristan Chew Jin Zhong, 25, and Ivan Tan Zhi Xuan, 31, nodded when the charge was read out to them before Magistrate Amalina Basirah Md Top. However, no plea was recorded from all the accused as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, Bernama reported. The four were jointly charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 with trafficking 9420.2 ml of cocaine at the exit of a hotel here at 11.45am last June 19. They face the death sentence or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The court set Sept 8 for mention and submission of the chemist's report. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Meanwhile in Putrajaya, the Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence imposed on a man who murdered his nine-year-old daughter in 2018. A three-member bench consisting of Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Azman Abdullah and Azmi Ariffin dismissed an appeal by Mohammad Abdullah Mohamed against his conviction and sentence by the High Court. Police nab foreign duo caught after high-speed chase, seize meth
PONTIAN: An attempt by two foreigners to evade a police inspection failed when they were apprehended following a 15-kilometre chase, leading to the seizure of drugs believed to be methamphetamine last night. District police chief, Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib, said the incident occurred at about 10pm when the driver of a car refused to stop after being ordered to pull over by a police mobile patrol unit along Jalan Kampung Parit Haji Othman, Seri Bunian, for inspection. He said the driver ignored the order and instead sped off towards Jalan Kampung Tenggayon, prompting a police pursuit that stretched for approximately 15 kilometres. "Police managed to stop the vehicle at the traffic lights along Jalan Sungai Gurap. "Upon inspection, the car was found to be driven by a male foreigner, accompanied by a female passenger, also a foreign national," he said in a statement today. Mohammad Shofee said further checks led to the discovery of two transparent plastic packets believed to contain methamphetamine, weighing 7.94g and 0.65g, inside the suspects' vehicle. He added that both suspects failed to produce any valid identification documents. The case is being investigated under the Penal Code, the Immigration Act, the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Road Transport Act 1987.
