KPDN launches KBBM 2025 to boost local MSME sales in Malaysia

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has launched the 2025 Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) under the theme 'Jom Beli Lokal' to strengthen domestic economic growth and support local entrepreneurs. Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali highlighted that the campaign aims to enhance sales value and market penetration for Malaysian-made products while reducing reliance on imports. 'This initiative directly supports local entrepreneurs and contributes to national economic growth,' he said during the launch at Puteri Harbour Convention Centre. The campaign will involve multiple ministries, government agencies, and private sector collaboration to promote local products as a preferred choice. Armizan emphasised that KBBM will expand to e-commerce platforms, leveraging partnerships with major operators like TikTok, Shopee, and Lazada. 'E-commerce plays a crucial role in reaching wider audiences, and we recorded over RM347 million in sales through KBBM in 2023 and 2024,' he added. The three-day Southern Zone Roadshow in Johor marks the beginning of a nationwide tour, covering five additional zones. The event includes consumer advocacy programmes, local product exhibitions, and government agency showcases. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and state committee chairman Lee Ting Han were also present at the launch.

Sarawak Customs thwart drug smuggling attempt at airport

KUCHING: The Sarawak Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 10.1 kilogrammes (kg) of methamphetamine hidden inside a box of snacks. Its director, Norizan Yahya, said the drugs, worth about RM347,200, were seized at the Kuching International Airport (LTAK) on April 16. He said a local man, who had arrived from Kuala Lumpur, was arrested at noon after exhibiting suspicious behaviour in the baggage claim area. 'The suspect was seen retrieving a box from the baggage carousel and then heading to the restroom with it. Officers from the LTAK Special Passenger Inspection Unit (UKPP) proceeded to close in to inspect the person and the box he was carrying. 'The inspection led to the discovery of 10 transparent plastic packages containing substances suspected to be methamphetamine, with a gross weight of 10,136 grammes,' he said in a statement today. He added that the arrest was a collaboration between the UKPP and the Sarawak JKDM Narcotics Branch. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Norizan Yahya KUCHING (May 8): The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak has foiled an attempt to smuggle 10.136kg of methamphetamine worth RM347,200 through Kuching International Airport. Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said a suspect has been arrested for the smuggling of the dangerous drugs via a flight from Peninsular Malaysia. He said the drugs were hidden with snacks to try to evade detection. 'On April 16, 2025, at approximately 12pm, JKDM Sarawak's Special Passenger Inspection Unit (UKPP) team, in collaboration with its narcotics branch, arrested a local Iban man, who had just arrived at the Kuching International Airport (KIA), Sarawak via a flight from Kuala Lumpur,' Norizan said in a statement. 'The arrest was made as a result of surveillance works of the UKPP team members, who had detected suspicious movements of a suspect in the baggage claim area. The suspect was seen claiming one box from the baggage carousel before heading towards the toilet with the box. UKPP team members then acted to conduct an inspection on the individual and the box he was carrying.' He said the inspection found 10 transparent plastic packets suspected to contain methamphetamine, which is a drug listed under Part I of the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking. If convicted, the offender could face the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if the sentence given by the court is life imprisonment, the offender will receive a minimum 15 strokes of the cane. 'Members of the public are urged to help JKDM fight against smuggling crimes, especially cigarettes, liquor, firecrackers, drugs, vehicles, and others, and are advised not to get involved in such activities,' Norizan said. 'Smuggling not only harms the country in terms of revenue leakage, but it also poses a threat to national security and the well-being of the people.' The public can report smuggling activities by contacting the Customs toll-free line on 1-800-88-8855 or head to the nearest Customs office. The department guarantees that the identity of each informant will be kept confidential. Kuching International Airport lead methamphetamine Norizan Yahya

Biggest Malaysia state fund said to renew exchangeable bond sale plan

[KUALA LUMPUR] Malaysia's Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) is considering reviving an exchangeable bond sale that it had explored six years ago to raise funds to expand overseas, people with knowledge of the matter said. State-owned PNB is working with financial advisers on the potential offering of exchangeable bonds, which are notes backed by shares in a listed company, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the process is private. It would be PNB's first exchangeable bond sale, they said. PNB is still deliberating and has not decided on the underlying stock or size and timing of a sale, the people said. In response to a Bloomberg News query on the matter, PNB said it continuously evaluates options as part of an asset diversification strategy aimed at delivering sustainable returns. PNB had RM347 billion (S$106 billion) assets under management as of Dec 24. Its investments include stakes in Malayan Banking, conglomerate Sime Darby and developer SP Setia. PNB also has holdings in Axiata Group, CIMB Group Holdings and Telekom Malaysia, among others. PNB explored an exchangeable bond sale in 2019, Bloomberg reported, but a change in leadership and the Covid pandemic put the brakes on that plan. BLOOMBERG
