Thailand to host Tomorrowland Music Festival for first time in 2026

Bangkok Post30-06-2025
Thailand is set to welcome one of the world's most iconic music festivals, Tomorrowland, for the very first time in 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country's ambition to become a global creative hub.
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), announced that on June 25 Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra received Tomorrowland CEO Bruno Vanwelsenaers and Filip Teelinck, a senior executive.
They had in-depth discussions on future collaboration and the realisation of Tomorrowland in Thailand, bringing the globally renowned Belgian music festival to Southeast Asia.
The initiative aligns with Thailand's broader soft power strategy, aiming to enhance the country's global standing through the promotion of music and cultural events and the creative economy. The inaugural Thai edition of Tomorrowland is scheduled to be in Chon Buri province in 2026.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn also took to social media to share her enthusiasm:
'Tomorrowland in Thailand is one step closer to becoming reality. On 25 June, I held discussions with Mr Bruno Vanwelsenaers of Tomorrowland to further a vision that began during Prime Minister Srettha's administration - to bring one of the world's leading music festivals to Thailand. The project is currently under study and preparation.
"Thailand will not merely serve as the 'host venue', but as the heartbeat of the festival. The government is committed to ensuring Thai cultural elements and Thai people are woven into every aspect of the event. This is about maximising benefits for Thai citizens.
"It is a golden opportunity to spotlight Thai artists, elevate the music industry, and set new standards for live entertainment in our country. This marks a pivotal moment in our journey to becoming a true World Event Destination.
"Our soft power policy is advancing steadily and sustainably. This festival is not just about entertainment — it represents new opportunities, a new economy, new income streams, and new pathways for Thais in the creative sector.'

CPN to open first phase of Central Park

Central Pattana Plc (CPN), Thailand's leading real estate developer, plans to open the first phase of Central Park, its 43rd shopping centre, on Sept 4, targeting 25 million visitors per year. The new mall is part of the Dusit Central Park mixed-use development covering 130,000 square metres of gross building area. Dusit Central Park includes a shopping centre, office tower, a hotel and residences, with a total investment of 46 billion baht and spanning 23 rai of land, while the Central Park brand comprises both the shopping centre and office tower, according to CPN. Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, chief marketing officer at CPN, said the first phase of Central Park will be launched on Sept 4 under the concept "Here for All of You", with a focus on gastronomy. The highlight events include "Edible Exhibition", transforming Central Park into an immersive art experience where the building itself becomes edible art. This will be followed by the full opening celebration this November, featuring even more global brands, according to CPN. The company aims to introduce world-class gastronomy as Asia's new culinary landmark, shaping a new city culture through international restaurants, art and fashion events, and dedicated spaces for curated happenings that will inspire new lifestyle trends all year round. After the grand opening, Central Park is expected to welcome more than 25 million visitors annually, or 70,000 visitors a day including both Thais and foreign tourists, he said. Kunayudh Dej-udom, asset director at Central Park, said the development blends urban living with nature at its prime location near Silom and Rama IV roads, opposite Lumpini Park. Central Park is designed with future flexibility to support evolving urban lifestyles, and all four components -- shopping centre, hotel, office and residences -- are interconnected with green spaces, including the 7-rai roof park. The mall plans to offer more than 550 leading brands, including for the first time in Thailand Kiwamiya, a teppanyaki restaurant renowned for its authentic wagyu steak from Japan; Koubai, a premium shabu-shabu; Long Jing Chinese fusion cuisine from Hangzhou; and Super Matcha, a premium green tea from South Korea. Some eateries are offering new concepts, while others are listed in the Michelin Guide and 70 street food legends will be featured, said Mr Nattakit. The company aims to create a legendary landmark that drives Bangkok's potential to become both a world-class metropolis and one of the world's most liveable cities, he said.

Plan offers free domestic flights to 200,000 foreign arrivals

The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to offer free domestic flight tickets to 200,000 foreign arrivals to boost tourism nationwide over a three-month period. The ministry expects the give-away to generate 8.8 billion baht in revenue from a budget of 700 million baht, but it still needs cabinet approval. Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong said the campaign was themed 'Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights', and would encourage foreign tourists to visit secondary destinations. Japan had used a similar strategy, providing free domestic seats to tourists, earlier this year. He said foreigners holding an international flight ticket would be able to claim one round-trip domestic flight ticket with 20 kilogrammes of baggage for free on six Thai carriers - Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet. The free tickets would be offered when tourists book international flights directly with airlines or online travel agents. "This is an exclusive campaign for foreign visitors who haven't yet booked a ticket," said Mr Sorawong. The ministry plans to propose the scheme to the cabinet for approval next week, seeking 700 million baht from the central budget, he said. The programme is scheduled to run from September to November, with a government subsidy of 1,750 baht per one-way ticket, or 3,500 baht for a round-trip ticket, for each tourist. Punlop Saejew, vice-president of the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, said the campaign would help tourism to some extent, although the arrival flow was already strong during high season. He said the campaign would be more effective if launched during the low season. Mr Punlop suggested the government allocate funds to help domestic airfares, which remain a barrier for travellers because of the high cost. Rungroj Santadvanit, president of the lower northeastern chapter of the Thai Hotels Association, said northeastern provinces may not benefit as much from this scheme, as they are not top destinations for foreign tourists, even though Buri Ram and Ubon Ratchathani have domestic flights from Bangkok. Apart from free flights, Mr Rungroj said authorities should plan marketing strategies and activities tailored to target markets of each location. For example, Buri Ram should promote sports and marathons as a sports tourism hub, while Ubon Ratchathani could highlight attractions along the Mekong River. He said northern provinces should attract more nature lovers from Australia and New Zealand, and the South should draw beach-loving visitors from Scandinavia. 'More importantly, the government must ensure tourism safety and clearly communicate which areas are safe to visit, especially amid the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia border tensions,' said Mr Rungroj. As of Aug 17, 20.8 million foreign tourists have visited Thailand this year, a decrease of 7% year-on-year. The largest market was China with 2.9 million arrivals.
