Oman's telecom sector powers ahead with surge in IoT, mobile connections

Arab News20-07-2025
JEDDAH: Oman's telecom sector grew 15.2 percent by May, with mobile subscriptions reaching 8.13 million and Internet of Things connections rising to 1.55 million amid digital expansion and smart tech adoption, official data showed.
IoT subscriptions surged by 118.7 percent, highlighting the growing demand for smart connectivity across sectors such as logistics, utilities, and manufacturing, the National Center for Statistics and Information said.
Oman's rapidly expanding digital infrastructure is central to Vision 2040, which focuses on innovation, economic diversification, and improved public services. Meanwhile, growth in fiber optic and fixed 5G subscriptions highlights the shift toward advanced, high-speed connectivity.
According to Mordor Intelligence, a global market research and consulting firm, this momentum is backed by substantial public investment.
In 2022, the government announced a $441.5 million digital transformation initiative to modernize the public sector and deliver seamless smart services to citizens and businesses.
'This commitment is further reinforced by the national Digital Economy Program's ambitious targets under Oman Vision 2040, which projects the digital economy's contribution to gross domestic product to rise from 3 percent in 2025 to 5 percent in 2030, ultimately reaching 10 percent by 2040,' Mordor said in a report on the Gulf state's information and communication technology market.
The research firm added that the government's digitalization drive includes a goal of digitizing approximately 80 percent of services by 2025, laying a robust foundation for long-term technological progress across sectors.
Further data from NCSI, also published by the Oman News Agency, showed postpaid mobile subscriptions climbed by 5.6 percent to over 1.23 million by the end of May, compared to the same period last year. Prepaid mobile subscriptions also rose, up 3.1 percent to more than 5.33 million.
Mobile broadband Internet subscriptions reached 5.41 million, while fixed broadband subscriptions increased by 2.6 percent year-on-year to 588,015.
Within the fixed Internet segment, fiber optic services grew by 11.4 percent to 339,279 subscriptions.
Fixed 5G connections rose by 2.1 percent to 215,850. However, legacy technologies are on the decline, with fixed 4G subscriptions falling by 38.1 percent to 19,654, digital user lines dropping by 50.8 percent to 11,806, and satellite Internet accounts shrinking by 2.1 percent to 653.
Other Internet services, such as powerline, Ethernet, and leased lines, also contracted by 12 percent, totaling only 773 subscriptions by the end of the fifth month.
The sultanate's digital transformation efforts are further underscored by the Government Digital Transformation Program, known as Tahawul, which reached 73 percent overall performance by November, up from 53 percent the previous year.
The government has streamlined and digitalized thousands of public services, with four key entities, including the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, achieving advanced digital excellence.
The progress aligns with Oman Vision 2040's priorities and is supported by major digital infrastructure projects, such as the upcoming unified e-government portal and the National Digital Integration Platform, which has processed over 1.4 billion data transactions.
The surge in digital government transactions, reaching nearly 27 million in 2024, reflects the growing public adoption of smart services. By 2025, 80 percent of essential government services are expected to be fully online.

Jeddah port receives LNG-powered MV BYD HEFEI

RIYADH: Jeddah Islamic Port has received the motor vessel BYD HEFEI, a dual-fuel roll-on/roll-off carrier with a 7,000-unit capacity for vehicles and heavy equipment. The vessel's arrival at the Red Sea Gateway Terminal reflects the port's readiness to handle next-generation maritime traffic and supports the Kingdom's broader push to enhance supply chain efficiency under Vision 2030. Operated at the RSGT — Saudi Arabia's first Build-Operate-Transfer terminal, partly owned by the Public Investment Fund and global logistics firm DP World — the MV BYD HEFEI highlights the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to modernize terminals and advance sustainability initiatives. The ship is powered by eco-friendly dual-fuel technology and is designed to meet the latest environmental and operational efficiency standards. 'This reflects the port's readiness to accommodate various types of vessels and highlights its advanced operational capabilities,' according to the Saudi Ports Authority, also known as Mawani. Strategically positioned near global shipping lanes, Jeddah Islamic Port handles over 65 percent of Saudi Arabia's seaborne imports, playing a central role in the Kingdom's National Transport and Logistics Strategy. The integration of liquefied natural gas-powered vessels aligns with the NTLS goals and the Saudi Green Initiative, which aim to reduce emissions and promote clean energy in the transportation sector. As ports across the UAE, Oman, and major global hubs like Singapore and Rotterdam invest in similar capabilities, Jeddah's adoption of dual-fuel infrastructure bolsters its regional competitiveness and positions it firmly in the worldwide shift toward sustainable maritime logistics. As part of its strategic efforts to strengthen maritime connectivity and diversify trade routes, Mawani has significantly expanded shipping services at Jeddah Islamic Port in 2025. Among the newly added services is FRS1, operated by CSTAR LINE, which connects Jeddah to Chinese ports — Ningbo, Shanghai, and Nansha — as well as Aqaba in Jordan and Ain Sokhna in Egypt, with a capacity of up to 2,000 twenty-foot equivalent units. In addition, the LRX service by CMA CGM began operations in July, linking Jeddah with key ports in the Levant and Eastern Mediterranean, including Latakia, Iskenderun, Mersin, and Beirut, with a TEU capacity of 2,826. Earlier in the year, the IM2 service, jointly operated by Emirates Line and Wan Hai, was introduced, connecting Jeddah to Mundra, Alexandria, and Mersin, with capacity for 2,800 TEUs. Sea Lead launched its RESIN service in June 2025, facilitating trade between Jeddah and Nhava Sheva, Ain Sokhna, Djibouti, and Jebel Ali, with a handling capacity of 1,000 TEUs. Meanwhile, CMA CGM's MEDEX service now connects Jeddah to 12 ports across the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe, including Abu Dhabi, Karachi, Colombo, and Piraeus, as well as Malta, Genoa, Fos, Barcelona, and Valencia. These service expansions underscore Jeddah Islamic Port's role as a growing transshipment and trade hub. In 2024, the terminal, considered the busiest on the Red Sea and a critical gateway for Saudi Arabia's trade, handled 5.58 million containers, marking a 12.6 percent year-over-year increase and positioning it 32nd globally by container volume.

India nearing free trade deal with Oman, minister says after UK pact

NEW DELHI: India's free trade agreement with Oman is almost finalized, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has announced, only days after New Delhi signed a long-awaited trade pact with the UK. Negotiations between India and Oman on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement formally began in November 2023, with the first round in New Delhi and the second in Muscat. When the talks concluded in March 2024, Oman sought revisions on market access terms and the final signature was postponed. 'We are in negotiations at an advanced stage with Oman — almost finalized,' Goyal told reporters on Saturday evening, two days after he signed a multibillion-dollar free trade deal with the UK. 'The free trade agreement between India and UK, the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement, clearly reflects the growing relevance and importance of India at the world stage.' Under the pact, about 99 percent of Indian goods will get duty-free access to the UK market, and bilateral trade is expected to increase by over $34 billion in the next decade from the current $54 billion. India has free trade agreements with more than 10 countries, including comprehensive economic partnership agreements with South Korea, Japan, and the UAE. It is also in talks with the EU to conclude an FTA by the end of 2025, and also with Australia, with an interim deal signed in 2022 and a full one under negotiation. If India finalizes its pact with Oman, it will be its second with a Gulf Cooperation Council country after the 2022 CEPA with the UAE. While Oman is one of New Delhi's smaller GCC trading partners — trailing behind the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with bilateral trade volume accounting for about $10 billion — it remains strategically important, particularly in energy and logistics. The FTA could further deepen these ties, Anil Wadhwa, New Delhi's former envoy to Muscat, told Arab News. 'India and Oman both are set to benefit a lot from this FTA ... Oman and India have a trade volume between $8 billion and $10 billion annually, and 700 Indian companies have invested in Oman,' he said. 'Oman was keen on an FTA on the lines of the UAE. The main negotiations took less than 90 days. Since then, Oman wanted further concessions in petrochemicals and in marble ... It is understood that these negotiations are now nearing a closure.' Economic cooperation plays a crucial role in India-GCC relations, with exports to India representing 71 percent of the bloc's total exports. India has been pursuing a free trade pact with the whole bloc for the past two decades. A framework agreement on economic cooperation was signed in 2004, but two rounds of negotiations, in 2006 and 2008, were inconclusive. The agreement would give India access to a large and affluent market for its goods and also concessions on visas in a region, which is a second home for about 9 million Indian expat workers. In January, GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohammed Al-Budaiwi said that the grouping would look forward to starting free trade negotiations with India in 2025.

SAMA expects new payment interface to support entry of e-stores

The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) expects the newly launched payment interface to facilitate the entry of new e-commerce stores, particularly local businesses that have previously faced technical and regulatory challenges. The initiative is part of efforts to unify integration standards with the Mada system, with the goal of enhancing the competitiveness of the Saudi market and expanding the base of payment service providers. According to Al Eqtisadiah newspaper, SAMA stated that the interface targets five key beneficiary groups: payment gateways, technical payment service providers, hosting banks and financial institutions, relevant government and private entities within the e-commerce ecosystem, and individual consumers—who will benefit from a more seamless and secure payment experience. The central bank explained that the interface will allow banks and financial institutions, in their role as hosting entities, to establish direct financing relationships with e-commerce merchants. This will enable financing based on actual sales generated through e-payments, allowing financial institutions to provide funding solutions backed by merchants' transaction data. According to data available with Argaam, SAMA launched the new e-payment interface earlier this month as part of a strategic initiative to improve payment system efficiency and accelerate the Kingdom's digital transformation in line with the rapid growth of the e-commerce sector.
