Spanish PM, Moroccan Consulate Condemn Hostile Attacks on Moroccans, Migrants
Far-right party Vox has been fueling the tensions with acutely Islamophobic and anti-migrant rhetoric. There have been social media posts and protests, calling for 'the hunt' of migrants from North Africa, especially Moroccans, blaming them for the assault that took place last week on Friday.
Vox and far-right media held anti-Islam and migrants protests, chanting Islamophobic slogans and inciting hatred and violence against migrants in the European country amid an ongoing investigation and arrests of suspects allegedly involved in the incident.
Responding on X, Sanchez said on Monday that 'racism is incompatible with democracy,' noting that what the country is witnessing in Torre Pacheco 'concerns us all.'
'We must speak out, act firmly, and defend the values that unite us. Spain is a country of rights, not of hate,' he said.
The Moroccan consulate in Murcia also released a statement, expressing condemnation of violent, hostile actions against members of the Moroccan community in the region.
The local representative said recent events have been marked by 'provocation, intimidation, and targeted violence' against Moroccans, who are now enduring a state of 'deep anxiety and tangible fear.'
The consulate stressed that it is constantly in touch with relevant Spanish authorities to ensure all necessary security guarantees are provided to Moroccans.
'We express our unconditional support to those affected and affirm our commitment to preserving their moral and physical integrity,' the statement concluded.
Moroccans remain the largest foreign community affiliated with Spanish social security, with 375,042 workers. Tags: bilateral ties between Morocco and SpainSpain and Morocco

University of Cordoba Launches ‘Fatima Al-Fihri Chair' to Foster Morocco-Spain Ties
Brussels – In a symbolic step towards deepening intercultural understanding and academic cooperation, the University of Cordoba and the Moroccan Embassy in Madrid announced on Monday the launch of the 'Fatima Al-Fihri Chair for Moroccan-Spanish Relations.' The initiative aims to create an academic platform dedicated to strengthening historical, cultural, and scholarly ties between Morocco and Spain. The launch ceremony, held in Cordoba, brought together Morocco's Ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, the University of Cordoba's rector, Manuel Torralbo, as well as academics, researchers, and civil society representatives from both countries. The academic chair is named after Fatima Al-Fihri, the Moroccan woman who founded the University of Al Quaraouiyine in Fez, widely recognized as the world's oldest operating university. The initiative draws inspiration from her legacy to promote knowledge-sharing, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence across the Mediterranean. Ambassador Benyaich emphasized that the creation of the chair reflects Morocco's ongoing commitment to intercultural dialogue and regional cooperation. 'This academic space honors the values of knowledge, coexistence, and peace through the legacy of figures such as Fatima Al-Fihri,' she said. She also highlighted the central role of Moroccan women in transmitting knowledge and promoting tolerance across generations. The chair will serve as an interdisciplinary academic hub, engaging in research and dialogue on themes such as history, culture, scientific exchange, and social dynamics, while also exploring new horizons for cooperation between Rabat and Madrid. University rector Torralbo expressed pride in hosting the initiative, noting that Cordoba has long been a symbol of coexistence and openness. He said the University of Cordoba is committed to transforming the chair into a vibrant platform through conferences, seminars, community outreach, and joint research projects. The Fatima Al-Fihri Chair aspires to become a beacon of academic and cultural collaboration and a tool for developing a more cohesive, inclusive Mediterranean space rooted in dignity, justice, mutual respect, and understanding. Handala Ship: Moroccan Journalist Mohamed El Bakkali Arrives in Morocco After Release
Rabat – Moroccan journalist Mohamed El Bakkali has arrived in Morocco today following his release by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). El Bakkali has been among the activists and journalists detained in the Mediterranean Sea aboard the Gaza-bound Handala ship, seeking to assist Palestinians suffering from a genocidal starvation strategy launched by the IOF for months. Several people wearing the keffiyeh and waving Moroccan flags welcomed the Moroccan journalist at the Mohammed VI Airport in Casablanca upon his arrival. During his reception, he expressed gratitude to Moroccans for their solidarity following his arrest. On Monday, the journalist's brother, Mustapha El Bakkali, confirmed that Mohamed El Bakkali arrived at the Paris airport evening following his release. 'Thank God, welcome back among us, hero,' El Bakkali's brother wrote on X. El Bakkali, a correspondent for Al Jazeera, has earned international support, demanding an international intervention to end his and other activists' detention. Many have joined an online campaign, calling on the Moroccan government to intervene to guarantee his release. On Monday evening, activists who were on board the Gaza-bound Handala aid ship refused to sign documents related to forced deportation. Several reports said the activists decided to continue their open-ended hunger strike. Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) said on Tuesday that Chris Smalls, a human rights defender from the US, was 'physically assaulted by seven ununiformed individuals.' 'They choked him and kicked him in the legs, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and back,' the organization said. The Handala ship sought to reach Gaza, which is facing a catastrophic famine staged by the IOF, which has been carrying out a genocidal war on civilians in the region since October 2023. Since Tuesday's dawn, the IOF has killed at least 62 civilians, including 19 aid seekers. This adds up to a death toll that reached 59,921 citizens, as well as 145,233 others wounded.
