Calcutta High Court allows protest on first anniversary of RG Kar student murder
While passing the order, Division Bench of Justice Sujay Paul and Justice Smita Das Dey observed that peaceful protest is a fundamental right.'This Court poignantly held that the right to protest is a fundamental right. Thus, no case is made for passing any blanket prohibitory order on a similar protest," the court said. "As noted above, the police have already issued the prohibitory order and it will be open for the government to implement the said prohibitory order in accordance with the law and inform the organisers about adequate alternative places for protest," the court observed. "While not granting any interim relief as prayed for against the protest, we are inclined to observe that it will be lawful for the persons participating in the protest to protest peacefully as law-abiding citizens and not cause any harm to the police or government authorities, buildings, public properties etc," the court added. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has supported the march on August 9 and will join the march, while parents of RG Kar victims have also agreed to be part of the march. While arguing, the state claimed that last year's Nabanna abhiyan resulted in the injury of more than 40 police personnel and one policemen had to lose his eyes. Apart from injury, government installations were also damaged. The court has thus ordered the protesters to hold the march in a peaceful manner without any violence.- EndsMust Watch

Uddhav proposes ‘Bhrashtachar Pe Charcha' as he trains his guns on MVA ministers, attacks Fadnavis for protecting them
Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) Monday launched a sharp attack on the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, staging a protest at Mumbai's Shivaji Park against what it called the 'brazen protection' of tainted ministers. It also launched a statewide protest at all the district collector's offices, marked by sloganeering and pointed references to specific leaders of the ruling alliance. Party workers called out various names, including ministers Manikrao Kokate, who was accused of playing rummy during the Assembly session; Bharat Gogawale, who was alleged to have engaged in black magic; and Sanjay Shirsat, who faced accusations of possessing a bag of cash in a hotel room. Shiv Sena (UBT) announced that the agitation will continue across districts until the 'corruption Cabinet' is dismantled. Addressing the gathering at Shivaji Park after the demonstration, Thackeray instructed his party cadre to take the fight beyond rallies and into everyday conversations. Drawing a parallel with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2014 campaign, he said, 'Modi had 'Chai Pe Charcha'.' 'Now, wherever you go — at tea stalls, in salons — start 'Bhrashtachar Pe Charcha'. Avoid only the shady bars, like Savali, owned by Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam. This protest should be continued till the corrupt ministers are removed,' he said. Thackeray also launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying that he feels pity for him since he cannot muster the courage to take action against 'corrupt' ministers. 'He has a brute majority, and his bosses sit in Delhi, yet he cannot muster the courage to sack the corrupt ministers. Even if we assume that he has not indulged in corruption himself, why is he covering up for others? We know that the BJP has no candidate who can be its national party president, but don't you also have anyone to replace these tainted ministers?' he questioned. Accusing the BJP of being the 'Bhrashtachari Janata Party', Thackeray mocked Fadnavis, saying 'He is not a chief minister, but a 'thief minister'. The Congress has given him a good name.' He challenged Fadnavis to 'throw off the pressure from Delhi' or risk being 'swept away' by public anger. 'In China, if someone says something against the government, they disappear. Here, too, similar things have happened; the Vice President was removed and he is now missing — show us where he is,' Thackeray said, referring to Jagdeep Dhankhar, who suddenly resigned as Vice President last month. Thackeray inquired about Dhankhar's disappearance and urged the BJP to disclose his whereabouts. He accused the Mahayuti alliance of pushing Maharashtra to 'the front row of corruption' while relegating it 'to the back row in development'. 'They have time to run dance bars and carry cash bags, but not to address farmers' problems,' he said.

Lok Sabha passes two tax bills amid din without debate
NEW DELHI: Amid continued opposition protest, the Lok Sabha on Monday passed two important legislations pertaining to taxation -- Income-Tax (No 2) Bill and Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill. The Income-Tax (No.2) Bill, 2025 seeks to consolidate and amend the law relating to Income Tax Act 1961. The Bill will replace the Income Tax Act, 1961. The Bill incorporates almost all of the recommendations of the Select Committee headed by senior BJP member Baijayant Panda. The other legislation -- the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025 will amend the Income-tax Act, 1961 as well as the Finance Act, 2025. It aims to provide tax exemptions to subscribers of the Unified Pension Scheme. These Bills were introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the lower house earlier in the day. "Almost all of the recommendations of the Select Committee have been accepted by the government. In addition, suggestions have been received from stakeholders about changes that would convey the proposed legal meaning more accurately," said the statement of objects and reasons of the Income-Tax (No.2) Bill, 2025. The Select Committee had suggested a host of changes in the Income-tax Bill, 2025, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on February 13. "There are corrections in the nature of drafting, alignment of phrases, consequential changes and cross-referencing. Therefore, a decision has been taken by the government to withdraw the Income-tax Bill, 2025 as reported by the Select Committee. Consequently, Income-tax (No. 2) Bill, 2025 has been prepared to replace the Income-tax Act, 1961," the statement said. The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, also passed by voice in the Lok Sabha, incorporated changes in the scheme of block assessment with regard to Income Tax search cases, and would provide for certain direct tax benefits to public investment funds of Saudi Arabia. It seeks to amend the Income-tax Act, 1961 and also the Finance Act, 2025. The government in July announced that all tax benefits available under the New Pension Scheme (NPS) shall apply to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which was implemented from April 1, 2025. These Bills were passed without any debate amid vociferous protest by members of Opposition over revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. After the passage of these bills by voice vote, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day.

BJP loses steam on SIR issue as its Bihar Dy CM is voter in 2 districts
Patna: A day after the Election Commission issued notice to Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha to explain how he was in possession of two EPICs (elector photo-identity cards) and how he was registered as voter in two districts – Patna and Lakhisarai, the Dy CM on Monday said he will reply to Election Commission notice as he "had full faith" in the poll panel.'I have respect for all constitutional bodies including the EC. I will reply to the poll panel's notice,' said Sinha, admitting that he was enrolled as a voter at booth number 405 of Bankipur Assembly constituency (182) in Patna Sahib where his EPIC number is AFS0853341. Besides, he has also been found to be a voter at Lakhisarai Assembly constituency (168) in Lakhisarai district where his EPIC number is SIR: Law does not require to share separate list of electors excluded from draft rolls, EC tells Supreme Court.'I have submitted a petition to the booth level officer (BLO) in Patna on August 5 to delete my name from the Bankipur constituency in Patna,' said Sinha, who has been elected as BJP legislator from Lakhisarai and intends to remain a voter EC, on Sunday, had asked the Bihar Deputy CM to explain by August 14 why and how his name was there in Patna as well as Lakhisarai and how he was in possession of two of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, who is himself embroiled in EPIC controversy, said, 'The EC acted against me very fast. But it should explain to the people that if 65 lakh duplicate voters' names were deleted in Bihar during the SIR exercise, why was Vijay Sinha's name not removed? Either the entire SIR is a fraud exercise or the Deputy CM himself is a fraud.'The former Dy CM also highlighted that the present Dy CM was 57-year-old in Lakhisarai, while the same person was registered as a 60-year-old voter in Patna.'The episode establishes the 'vote-theft' charge against the EC. We have always maintained that the entire SIR exercise is faulty and being carried at the behest of the BJP,' said Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram.
