BJP MP Kangana Ranaut defamation trial resumes in Bathinda court

Time of Indiaa day ago
Bathinda: The defamation case against Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut resumed in a Bathinda court on Monday, 10 days after the Punjab and Haryana high court dismissed her petition.
The trial court has adjourned the matter to Oct 4 for further orders.
The proceedings were stayed for over three years while Ranaut's petition was pending before the high court. The petition, which challenged summons issued by the Bathinda court on Feb 22 and April 19, 2022, was dismissed on Aug 1 by a bench led by Justice Tribhuvan Dahia.
The defamation case was filed by Mahinder Kaur, an elderly woman farmer from Bahadurgarh Jandian village, following a 2020 social media post by Ranaut.
In a retweet, the actress allegedly misidentified Mahinder Kaur as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh and claimed that such women were available for Rs 100 in protests. Kaur, a farm activist, was participating in protests against the now-scrapped farm laws at the Delhi borders.
Her husband, Labh Singh, appeared on her behalf during Monday's hearing. Kaur's counsel, Raghbir Singh Behniwal, informed the court that the high court's order had not placed a stay on the trial's continuation.
Ranaut's lawyers, however, told the court they intend to challenge the high court's decision in the Supreme Court.

Clear stand on internal reservation by Aug 16: BJP

Bengaluru: The BJP has urged the Congress-led state government on Tuesday to make its stand clear on the issue of internal reservation by August 16 and warned of a large scale protest if the government fails to reciprocate. Former Union Minister and veteran BJP leader A. Narayanaswamy said: "The Congress-led government in Karnataka must announce a clear decision on internal reservation by August 16. If it fails to do so, we will launch a non-cooperation movement against it after August 16." He was speaking to the media at a workshop organised by the Karnataka Madiga Organisations' Federation at Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall in Bengaluru regarding the implementation of the Justice Nagamohan Das report. Narayanaswamy said that going by the overall findings of the reports, reservation for Madigas should be increased from six to seven or eight per cent. He stressed that the state government should not stop at just providing reservation but should also announce special schemes for the community. "In the Common Entrance Test results, Madigas have qualified in very small numbers. Out of 2,500 seats available in state universities, only 600 are taken by students from our community. This reflects our educational condition," he said. He noted that the report recommends internal reservation based on population, and within that population there are 36.69 lakh Madigas. "If another related community is included, the number goes up to 41 lakh. This fact should not be overlooked," he said in response to a query. "If the Cabinet is committed to social justice, it should make an announcement on internal reservation by August 16. Otherwise, no further meetings will be held and agitation will be launched," he declared.

Bihar SIR appears to be trust deficit issue: Top court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday called the Bihar special intensive revision (SIR) row "largely a trust deficit issue' as the Election Commission of India (ECI) claimed roughly 6.5 crore people of the total 7.9 crore voting population didn't have to file any documents for them or their parents featured in the 2003 electoral roll. The top court is hearing a batch of pleas against the Election Commission electoral roll revision exercise in Bihar. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi during the hearing remarked it "largely appears to be a case of trust deficit, nothing else' as it questioned the petitioners challenging the EC's June 24 decision of conducting the SIR on the ground that it would disenfranchise one crore voters. "If out of 7.9 crore voters, 7.24 crore voters responded to the SIR, it demolishes theory of one crore voters missing or disenfranchised," the bench told senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for petitioner and RJD leader Manoj Jha. The top court also agreed with the EC decision to not accept Aadhaar and voter cards as conclusive proof of citizenship in the ongoing exercise and said it has to be supported by other documents. Sibal contended that despite residents holding Aadhaar, ration and EPIC cards, officials refused to accept the documents. "Is it your argument that people who have no documents but are in Bihar and therefore he should be considered as a voter of the state. That can be allowed. He has to show or submit some documents (sic)," the bench said. When Sibal said people were struggling to find birth certificates and other documents of their parents, Justice Kant said, "It is a very sweeping statement that in Bihar nobody has the documents. If this happens in Bihar, then what will happen in other parts of the country?" Political activist Yogendra Yadav, who addressed the court in person, questioned the data given by the poll panel and said instead of 7.9 crore voters there was total adult population of 8.18 crore and the design of SIR exercise was to delete the voters.
