Raichur PS conducts ‘homa' to counter rising crime, stirs a hornet's nest
Navagraha puja, Mrityunjaya homa, Vastu Shanti, and Dosha Nivarana pujas were conducted in one of the inner rooms at the police station, with a large pumpkin smashed near the main entrance, and saffron sprinkled over it as part of the rituals.
Confirming the pujas, inspector Pundalik Patedar said: "Numerous unpleasant incidents, such as fights, thefts, accidents, and other crimes were being reported at the police station.
Therefore, homas and pujas were performed to foster peace."
However, this initiative by the police has been criticised by a section of the public, saying: "Police are tasked with upholding law and order. If they themselves engage in homa and puja, who will protect us from the criminals?"
Hanumanthappa Kunikelloor, the coordinator of the Kalaburagi division of DSS (N Murthy faction), expressed his dissatisfaction, alongside Lingappa Parangi, the coordinator of the Kalaburagi division of DSS (Ambedkar faction), terming the exercise "utterly foolish" and "inappropriate".
However, Patedar justified the action, saying: "No puja was held in the police station since the new building was inaugurated. As it is the month of Shravana, we performed the Sudarshan homa for peace and order."

Maha police issues circular for protection of cattle traders
Mumbai: Following talks with cattle traders protesting increasing attacks from cow vigilantes, Maharashtra police have issued a circular saying only police will have powers to take action against illegal or unauthorised transportation of animals. The order specifies that it is illegal for private individuals to stop and check vehicles carrying cattle. The circular by special inspector general (law and order) Manoj Kumar Sharma came after a meeting where deputy CM and NCP chief Ajit Pawar issued instructions to stop gau-rakshaks (cow vigilantes) from checking livestock vehicles and harassing transporters and those involved in livestock business. A week ago, a delegation of the Federation of Maharashtra Muslims and the Qureshi community, which is traditionally associated with the meat trade, called on Pawar alleging harassment and torture, mainly in rural areas. They spoke of cases foisted on them. They said this had impacted the trade in livestock and animal products. Those who attended the meeting included former minister Nawab Malik, his daughter and MLA Sana Malik and prominent members of the Qureshi community besides DGP Rashmi Shukla and Mumbai police commissioner Deven Bharti. Sana Malik said several members of the Quresh community have lost their lives in such attacks by vigilantes. The state has amended the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act (1976) to ban the slaughter of cow progeny but the trade and slaughter of buffalo is permitted with regulations. The Qureshi community is "a part of Maharashtra's agriculture-based economy" and "no injustice will be allowed to be done to the traders of this community and the farmers who transport animals," the deputy CM had said in a statement after the meeting. ‘1930' Mumbai cyber police helpline receives up to 2,700 calls a day
Mumbai: The '1930' Cyber Helpline receives 2,500–2,700 calls daily, with about 200 being complaints from victims ranging from govt officials and bankers to even police personnel, said deputy commissioner of police (Cyber) Purshottam Karad. In the last six months, cybercrime victims in Mumbai lost Rs 600 crore to various scams, compared to Rs 750 crore in the whole of last year. In 2024, cyber police recovered Rs 250 crore, while this year's half-year figure has already crossed Rs 109 crore, largely because the victims reported incidents within the "golden hour" period. The '1930' helpline, linked to the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, is designed to act during the "golden hour" — the brief window when fraudulent transactions can still be frozen before disappearing into mule accounts and offshore wallets. That day alone, 110 complaints were logged on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, involving investment scams, share trading frauds, fake online shopping offers, and fraudulent WhatsApp profiles. The city's five regional cyber cells have registered around 900 cases so far in 2025, down from 1,400 cases in 2024. Cyber Crime Cell officials said the detection rate could improve further with greater public awareness and timely reporting. To curb crimes like digital arrest scams, phishing, and social media frauds, cyber police will soon launch an extensive awareness campaign across schools, colleges, corporate offices, campuses, and govt departments. HC rejects bail plea of Vinay Choubey
Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court rejected the bail petition of suspended senior IAS officer Vinay Kumar Choubey on Thursday. The court of Justice Sanjay Kumar Dwivedi rejected Choubey's petition after not finding any merit in it. Choubey challenged his arrest by the anti corruption bureau (ACB) and mentioned in his petition that the FIR lodged against him is not maintainable and should be dismissed. Choubey was arrested in May this year for his alleged involvement in the Rs 38 crore liquor scam. He had challenged his arrest in the high court on the point that the ACB has not followed guidelines of the Supreme Court to be observed prior to arrest of an accused.
