
Nissan's future looks bleak
While the cuts only affect four per cent of the plant's 6,000 workers, the question now is whether this is just the start. So serious is the state of Nissan's finances – it announced losses of $4.5 billion (£3.3 billion) in 2024, with this year not expected to be any better – that it would be foolish to assume this is where it will end.
The company has maintained that the Sunderland plant is at the heart of its corporate strategy and it justified the lay-offs as necessary to produce a 'leaner more flexible' operation. Football mad Mackems though might note that these comments sound uncomfortably like the endorsements football club chairmen give under-fire managers days before they, well, fire them. There are certainly reasons to be anxious: on the same day Nissan announced the Sunderland lay-offs it was reported that the company had asked some suppliers in the UK and EU to delay payments to free up short-term funds.
The importance of Nissan to the Sunderland area is hard to overstate. Thousands of people are directly employed at the plant with an additional 4,000 jobs in the city reliant on the company in some way. By staying put in Sunderland, Nissan has bucked the trend in an area synonymous with declining industry. Its presence has acted as a symbol of hope and pride for almost 40 years now. Nissan has been a sponsor of Sunderland FC and runs the Nissan Academy offering engineering courses and apprenticeships for students amongst many other good works. But what happens if it shuts up shop? The prospects for Sunderland look bleak.
Despite recent difficulties, the company is still officially bullish about its future in the region and has ambitious plans. These include the 'Arc' business strategy, which it claims will transform the process of electric car production and maximise efficiency and profits. To this end the company has invested a billion pounds in a nearby battery plant to supply its new range of EVs.
The problem is that none of this will work if customers are not interested and Nissan has been haemorrhaging sales to the much 'leaner and more flexible' Chinese competitors for years. The company, which once looked like the future, has been characterised of late by strategic missteps, complacency, and missed opportunities. It has been a long time since Nissan's confident forward thinking corporate rhetoric has matched reality.
Partly as a result of its tarnished reputation, the reaction to Nissan's plight here in Japan has been mixed. Emblematic companies are expected to do the country proud not embarrass it and Nissan has done rather too much of the latter in recent years. The Carlos Ghosn affair was especially wounding. Once seen as the company's likely saviour, his 'great escape' from police custody inside a musical instrument box in 2019 was as farcical as it was humiliating.
There is a feeling here that the company is its own worst enemy and may be beyond saving. The Japanese government tried to intervene to salvage Nissan with support for a once unthinkable merger with Honda and the courting of Elon Musk as a potential saviour. Both schemes failed, possibly because the principles took a look at Nissan's books and drove off at speed.
Some sympathy is due perhaps, at least for Nissan in the UK, where the huge difficulties resulting from the ever-changing diktats of climate-obsessed governments (Conservative and Labour) have put the industry under great strain. The wholly unnecessary set of circumstances that has led the UK to have among the highest industrial energy prices in the world makes plants like Sunderland vulnerable when its owners are struggling in a fiercely competitive market.
It would be a massive reputational embarrassment for Nissan if it were to withdraw or dramatically scale back its operations in Sunderland, and no one is suggesting that such an eventuality is imminent. Still, it might be wise to think of this week's announcement as a warning and a clarion call for sensible policy making. One would hope that the Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is listening carefully.

JOHN MURDOCH'S DRIVE TIME: We sample the new Polestar 4 and reveal prices for the new Nissan Micra model
The car is manufactured in China and Polestar has put absolutely everything onto the touchscreen apart from a volume control for the sound system. In this instalment of John Murdoch's Drive Time, John samples the new Polestar 4, an all-electric coupe style SUV, and reveals the prices for the new Nissan Micra model, with order books opening next month. The Polestar 4 is a smart-looking SUV with coupe styling that gets lots of attention - mainly because it has no rear window. It may offer an excellent range between charges and stacks of equipment and technology, as well as impressive performance and lots of space but most people focused on the lack of a rear window. The Swedish/Chinese manufacturer has replaced the rear window with a live camera which feeds onto a digital mirror and although it works perfectly, I found it difficult to get used to. The car is manufactured in China and Polestar has put absolutely everything onto the touchscreen apart from a volume control for the sound system and some drivers will love that while others may struggle with it. Customers can choose between single or dual motor models, offering rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, respectively. Both versions feature a Long range 100kWh battery, with the Dual motor I sampled providing significantly more power. It cost £67,000 in standard form but with metallic paint at £1400 and Animal Welfare Nappa leather at £3100, the final total was £71,500. The test car came with 22" alloy wheels and a Pilot Pack as standard, which introduces semi-autonomous driving features like lane keeping and automatic parking. Also Included in the cost was the Plus Pack, featuring a super 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a 14.7-inch head-up display, upgraded pixel LED headlights with adaptive high beam, and a powered soft-closing tailgate with foot sensor operation. The Polestar 4 is a handsome car and the panoramic glass roof tapers away towards the rear, while there are dual blade headlights, an illuminated Polestar logo and flush door handles, giving it a sporty look. The cabin is elegant and clutter-free, with minimal physical controls. Instead, the 15.4-inch infotainment screen serves as the central hub for nearly all functions, from adjusting the steering wheel and regenerative braking settings to switching drive modes and even opening the glovebox. This screen also controls the sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, the sound system, reversing camera, Bluetooth and Google Assistant. The comfortable seats are powered and heated as is the steering wheel and the outer rear seats. All the driving data like speed, range, and battery levels are displayed on a clear driver information screen behind the steering wheel and there is also a head-up display. When it comes to performance, the Polestar 4 is quick. It boasts 544 bhp and can sprint to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 124mph. The single motor version is still nippy and tackles the sprint in 7.1 seconds and has the same top speed. This model can go 367 miles between charges depending on conditions and it performed well on both country roads and motorway runs. With AWD it provided stacks of grip and you can opt for single-pedal driving. Five adults can travel in comfort, with lots of leg, shoulder and headroom even in the rear and the huge glass roof means there is lots of light. The boot, accessed via a powered tailgate, provides 526 litres of storage, extending to 1536 litres with the rear seats down. There's also a covered storage compartment under the bonnet for an additional 15 litres. A wireless charging pad is another bonus. Charging the 100kWh battery from 10-80 per cent takes just 30 minutes via a 200kW fast charger. A 11kW home charger takes about 11 hours for a full charge and 17.5 hours from a normal domestic socket. As you would expect from a car of this quality it has all the latest driver assist and safety features to protect occupants and other road users. There is no doubt that the Polestar 4 is a quality product that is crammed with technology but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I did not have to use the screen to adjust everything. It was not always easy on the move and a few buttons for climate and entertainment functions would make it more pleasant from my point of view. Meanwhile, Nissan has confirmed pricing for the sixth-generation Micra - and it will cost from £22,995 for the all-electric supermini. That is similar to its new Renault 5 sister with which it shares much. Pricing will start from £22,995 for the 40kWh Engage model. Mid-grade Advanced trim models will cost from £24,995 and top specification Evolve versions with a larger 52kWh battery will be available from £29,865. As such, the all new Micras should qualify for the Government's new Electric Car Grant which is worth up to £1500. The official range now reaches 260 miles for the 52kWh battery and 198 miles for the 40kWh battery, a respective gain of around seven miles of range compared to the initial announcement. Quick charging from 15 per cent to 80 per cent takes 30 minutes. To maximise the charging efficiency, a heat pump is standard on both battery options, as well as battery heating and cooling capability. The new Micra integrates Google Built-in services via the NissanConnect infotainment system, with Google Maps supplied as standard. The latter also plays a key role in route planning. If the destination exceeds the available range, the system automatically identifies charging stations along the route, considering the charge level, average consumption, and temperature. It can even precondition the battery to ensure optimal charging speed. James Taylor, managing director of Nissan GB said: "Micra is the first of four new fully electric models to arrive on the Nissan lineup and we are incredibly excited to be pricing it so competitively. Micra is a key strategic model for Nissan." The new Micra pays homage to previous generations of the iconic model - a compact city car that has sold more than six million units worldwide since its launch in 1983. Nissan says order banks will open at the beginning of next month.

The e4orce system means the vehicle is at home in a variety of conditions The durability of the interior is improved by the fact all seats are equipped with wipe-clean, water-resistant upholstery, while rubber mats have replaced the carpet-style mats seen on regular X-Trails. Standard features also include a reversible boot lining mat made of robust rubber. These hard-to-ruin surfaces will undoubtedly save a world of pain when, for example, transporting kids back from Sunday football after a match on a muddy pitch, or perhaps returning from trail running or mountain biking exploits. The vehicle is also compatible with the existing wide range of accessories such as towbars, roof bars, bike racks, and a cargo area organiser. With the seven-seat configuration, the middle bench can slide in a 60:40 formation to balance space for all occupants, with ample legroom in the middle row. The boot size of the seven-seater is smaller at 485 litres, compared to the 575 litres offered by the five-seater. The vehicle is suited to outdoor enthusiasts In its efforts to meet the requirements of outdoor enthusiasts, Nissan offers the N-Trek with top two hybrid outputs in the X-Trail range. The model features Nissan's e-POWER or e-4ORCE powertrains, which make use of a turbocharged three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine with variable compression ratio tech to generate electricity and charge the car's battery. Choices are between the 201bhp two-wheel-drive and the 210bhp all-wheel-drive set-up. The more potent four-wheel-drive option comes with a trade-off; it decreases efficiency, offering an official figure of 44.8mpg, compared to the two-wheel-drive's 48.7mpg. If you drive around town a lot of lower speeds, the electric driving should bring those fuel economy figures down a bit. The interior is durable and spacious However, towing capacity expands significantly with the four-wheel-drive option, pulling a maximum braked trailer weight of 1,800kg (five-seater) or 1,650kg (seven-seater), compared to the front-wheel-drive's capacity of only 670kg. The space and flexibility of the cabin makes this a hugely practical family vehicle, with oceans of space for occupants and their luggage. The 12.3-inch screen looks good and provides clear graphics, but can take a while to respond to commands. Behind the wheel, the 0-62mph time of seven seconds feels swift for a vehicle of this size. The vehicle looks purposeful from all angles The hybrid powertrain fills the lag in petrol power nicely, and transitions smoothly between sources of power with none of the jerkiness you sometimes find with this sort of combination. The set-up of the X-Trail is weighted in favour of comfort over sportiness. The suspension absorbs road imperfections nicely, but the handling doesn't feel especially sharp when progressing swiftly along a twisty B-road. Grip levels are excellent in most conditions, with the e-4ORCE all-wheel drive powertrain employing a motor at each axle which can adjust power application rapidly according to the available grip. All in all, the X-Trail is an excellent all-round package, offering practicality, lots of tech and an adventurous spirit.
