PHNOM PENH, July 25 (Bernama) -- A leading tourism body is urging the international community to help protect Cambodia's priceless ancient temples amid the ongoing conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.
The Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia Chapter Chairman, Dr Thourn Sinan, said destruction of the ancient temples would be a significant loss, not just to the Cambodian people, but to the world.

'This is bigger than the borders. It's about human dignity and world heritage. Temples like Preah Vihear, Ta Moan, and Ta Krabey have stood for centuries. If they are destroyed, it is not just Cambodia's loss - it is the world's loss.
'These sites are not just Cambodia landmarks, they are recognised as part of the world's cultural heritage,' Sinan told Bernama today.
The Preah Vihear temple is located in Preah Vihear province, while Ta Maon Temple and Ta Kra Bei Temple are located in Odor Meanchey province.
These areas have become flash points for the two neighbours which have become adversaries over decades-long territorial disputes.
Although tensions were sporadic in the past, on Thursday, the dispute turned ugly with heightened military engagement between the two nations at the borders.
Sinan is urging the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), ASEAN, and the United Nations to protect the world heritage sites and stop the conflict before it becomes a conflagration.

Borneo Flora Festival 2025 boosts Labuan's economy and regional ties

LABUAN: The Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025 is more than a floral showcase—it is a strategic initiative under the MADANI Government's reform agenda to reshape Labuan's economic future. Launched today, the festival aims to diversify the island's economy beyond oil and gas while fostering regional collaboration. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa highlighted Labuan's progress, noting a 5.4 per cent GDP per capita growth in 2024. 'Labuan's GDP per capita reached RM87,000 last year, the second highest in Malaysia, but we must ensure this translates to real benefits for the people,' she said. Tourism is a key focus, with over one million visitors in 2024—a 15.7 per cent increase from the previous year. The BFF is expected to attract 50,000 visitors, generating RM20 million in direct economic impact for local businesses. 'This festival is a catalyst for sustainable growth, benefiting hotels, food vendors, and small enterprises,' Dr Zaliha added. Beyond economic gains, the festival strengthens regional ties under the theme 'Strengthening Borneo Regional Cooperation.' Thirty-one exhibitors from Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesia are participating. 'This reflects our shared vision to position Borneo as a hub for tropical horticulture and tourism,' she said. The BFF also aligns with ASEAN and BIMP-EAGA goals, promoting cross-border trade and cultural exchange. 'Our diversity is our strength, and this festival opens doors for investment and knowledge sharing,' Dr Zaliha concluded. - Bernama

AirAsia launches KL, Kuching–Pontianak direct flights from Sept 12

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Malaysia has introduced two new direct routes linking Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The flights, set to commence on September 12, 2025, will make AirAsia the sole airline operating international flights to the city. The expansion follows AirAsia's rapid growth in Indonesia, including recent launches of the Kuala Lumpur–Palembang route in July and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur–Semarang service in September. 'With the introduction of Pontianak, AirAsia Malaysia will operate to a total of 17 destinations in Indonesia through 223 weekly flights between the two countries, solidifying its position as the airline with the widest network serving Indonesia,' the company stated. These new routes aim to enhance regional connectivity and support tourism targets, including Malaysia's goal of attracting 4.3 million Indonesian tourists in 2025 and Sarawak's target of five million visitor arrivals by year-end. Additionally, the expansion aligns with Indonesia's national target of 16 million international arrivals, with Malaysia remaining a key source market. The routes were unveiled during the Sarawak Travel Fair in Pontianak, officially launched by West Kalimantan Governor Drs Ria Norsan. He highlighted the benefits of the new flights, stating, 'West Kalimantan stands ready to welcome more Malaysian visitors while providing convenient access for Indonesians seeking business opportunities, leisure travel and medical services in Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur.' Malaysia's Consul in Pontianak, Azizul Zekri Abd Rahim, emphasised the significance of the new connectivity in strengthening bilateral ties. 'With Visit Malaysia 2026 on the horizon, this expansion comes at the perfect moment to further boost tourism, foster cultural exchange and enhance regional ties between both nations,' he said. AirAsia Malaysia CEO Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra noted the strong demand for travel between Malaysia and West Kalimantan as a key driver for the expansion. 'By launching flights from our main hub in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, we are providing greater convenience and flexibility for our guests while contributing to the tourism growth and economic development of both Malaysia and Indonesia,' he added. - Bernama

Launch Of National Month 2025 Brings Income Boost For Small Traders In Muar

MUAR, July 26 (Bernama) -- Thousands of visitors thronged Dataran Tanjung Emas here for the three-day event held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign, creating a ripple effect of economic benefits for the local community. The national-level programme held over the weekend delivered a direct economic boost to homestay operators, food vendors and small traders, many of whom saw demand surge and sales triple compared to regular days. Homestay operator Nur Athirah Badlishah, 31, said all her units had been fully booked a month before the programme due to strong demand from guests travelling from outside Muar. 'I got a lot of calls asking about homestays, but mine were already full. So I suggested a few run by friends to make sure visitors had a place to stay. 'The response this time was extraordinary. Alhamdulillah, we were able to earn some extra income through this programme,' she told Bernama. Meanwhile, 54-year-old nasi campur seller Maimon Abdullah said her sales had almost tripled following a sudden surge in customers since yesterday. 'Yesterday, all the dishes were sold out before 3 pm, so I cooked double today to make sure no one went home disappointed,' she said, adding that some of her customers had come all the way from Singapore for the event. Local fruit trader Lim Kok Wah, 49, said he had to extend his business hours until late at night to keep up with the overwhelming demand. 'Sales this morning alone went up by over 40 per cent compared to a normal day. I'll keep the stall open until 11 pm for these two days as the response has been amazing,' he said.
