Indian cricketer Rinku Singh's wedding with Member of Parliament Priya Saroj, scheduled to be held in Varanasi on November 19, has been postponed for a few months due to Rinku's cricket commitments. Their engagement was held in a glittering ceremony in Lucknow on June 8. Rinku Singh and Priya Saroj after their engagement in Lucknow(Instagram)
Priya's father, Tufani Saroj — a three-time MP from Machhlishahr (Uttar Pradesh) and current MLA from Kerakat, Jaunpur — confirmed this development to us.
He explains that due to Rinku's busy schedule, no decision has been made yet regarding the wedding plans. He says, 'We have not decided on anything for now. Unka jab pura program aa jayega game [cricket schedule] ka tab kuch tay hoga. Abhi pura schedule ana baki hai.'
As announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), India will host South Africa for an all-format series, starting with two Tests from November 14 to 18 in Guwahati, where Rinku is set to play. Prior to that, India will tour Australia for three ODIs and five T20s between October 19 and November 8.
Rinku and Priya's engagement was attended by Congress leader and BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, MP Dimple Yadav, actor-politician Jaya Bachchan, and others.
Priya is a first-time legislator from Machhlishahr. She defeated BP Saroj to become the second youngest candidate to be elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024.
Meanwhile, Rinku played for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the recently concluded edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The cricketer has played two One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 33 Twenty20 Internationals.
Tufani had previously shared that Priya was introduced to Rinku through a mutual friend, whose father is also a cricketer. Before engagement, he said, 'Yeh pehla function hai. Abhi parivaar ka hi function hai. Shaadi November 18 ki final kari hai.' The event will be held at The Centrum in Lucknow.

How India's chances to host 2030 Commonwealth Games got a boost as Canada's bid hits a snag

The Canadian province of Ontario, which was in the race to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, has chosen not to pursue the bid further due to cost-related issues. It dealt a blow to the 'United Canada' bid as Ontario was one of the four provinces that had expressed interest in jointly hosting the 2030 edition. The decision seemingly boosts the chances of the Games returning to India after 2010, as Canada was seen as a key competitor for the event that has struggled to find any takers. Apart from India and Canada, Nigeria was the third country that had submitted an Expression of Interest to host the 2030 edition, the Commonwealth Sport had said in a statement back in April. However, as per reports in the Nigerian media, the country's bid — centred around the capital city of Abuja — is yet to 'take off'. Two other unnamed countries were interested, too, the governing body added without revealing details. While Canada and Nigeria are still stitching together a competitive bid, India has raced ahead with the preparations for the 2030 CWG, which the country sees as a 'test event' for the 2036 Olympic Games. Ahmedabad is the frontrunner to host both Games, with some events likely to take place in other cities as well. An Indian delegation comprising ministers and bureaucrats from the Gujarat government, the Union Sports Ministry, and the Indian Olympic Association met top Commonwealth Sport leaders in London on June 7. Following their discussions, it is learnt that the Commonwealth Sport officials will be visiting Ahmedabad in August, days before the August 31 deadline to submit the bid officially. If it happens, it will be the Commonwealth Sport officials' second visit to Ahmedabad after their first trip in late January. Canada was seen as a strong contender not just because of its proven track record of hosting big-ticket events but also due to sentimental reasons. Hamilton, Ontario had hosted the first British Empire Games, as they were called back then, in 1930. The Games' return to the port city in 2030 would have marked the 100th anniversary. The Ontario government's decision not to bid for the CWG came days after the Indian visit. According to the Canadian media, the decision was taken following a 'cost-benefit' analysis. The Hamilton Spectator reported on Wednesday that there was a 'pushback against spending big money on the Games. It further added that to make it less costly, the most recent proposal, which was submitted to the Commonwealth Sport, was to 'hold the event in multiple provinces at the same time to make use of existing facilities and eliminate many costs'. The opening or closing ceremonies, it added, were likely to be held in Hamilton. With Ontario no longer interested in hosting the event, it is unclear whether there will be a 'United Canada' bid for the 2030 CWG. The province of Alberta, too, had earlier withdrawn from the race, citing cost factors. While Canada will now have to return to the drawing board to come up with another feasible proposal, if at all there will be one, the Gujarat government had identified the 2030 CWG as one of the key events to gain hosting experience in the country's bid for the 2036 Olympics. In August, Ahmedabad will host the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship and then the Asian Swimming Championship in October. The interest from India also comes at a time when the Commonwealth Sport has found few takers to host its flagship event. In 2022, Durban was chosen as the host but the South African city later pulled out citing financial reasons. Birmingham was then named the new host. Similarly, the Australian state of Victoria surrendered the hosting rights after winning the bid for the 2026 CWG. After a Commonwealth-wide hunt, Glasgow stepped up to rescue the Games. However, unlike the previous editions, Glasgow CWG will only be a 10-sport event with a tight cap on the number of athletes to make it affordable.

Prithvi Shaw admits to his 'mistakes'; opens on rough phase of career: 'Made some wrong friends'

Prithvi Shaw was once touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, but the young right-handed batter is now nowhere in the equation when it comes to selection for the national senior side. The batter was even dropped from Mumbai's playing XI for the Ranji Trophy, and months later, he was not even named in the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Months later, the 25-year-old has finally opened up on the rough phase of his career, saying he 'got distracted'. Prithvi Shaw spills the beans on the rough phase of his career. (PTI) Shaw made his Test debut in 2018, scoring 134 in his debut innings. Soon after, the then-head coach Ravi Shastri famously remarked that Prithvi Shaw is a combination of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Virender Sehwag. Last year, Shaw did not even get a bid in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. He went unsold and later, no franchise even picked him as a replacement player despite a plethora of injuries across several teams. 'There are a lot of things. It is different for people to see. Because I know what has happened. I can understand it. I have taken a lot of wrong decisions in life. I started giving less time to cricket. I used to practice a lot. For example, I used to bat for 3-4 hours in nets. I never got tired of batting. I used to go to the ground for half a day. I admit that there was a distraction,' Shaw told News24. Also Read: Prithvi Shaw decides to leave Mumbai, seeks to play 'professional under another state 'After that, I started considering what was not necessary as necessary. I made some wrong friends. Because I was at the top at that time. Friendship is also formed. Then they took me here and there. All those things. Then I got away from the track. I used to give 8 hours of practice on the ground. Now it is 4 hours,' he added. 'I had a family problem' Prithvi Shaw, who recently sought a No-Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to play for another state, also revealed that he had a family problem, and this distracted him as well. He opened up about how he went through a low phase after his grandfather passed away. 'There are a lot of things. It's not just that. I had a family problem. My grandfather had passed away. He was very dear to me. There are a lot of things that I can't tell you. But I can feel it.' 'I admit my mistakes. But my dad has always supported me. No matter how bad my time was. He has seen good and bad,' he added. Prithvi Shaw, who has shared the dressing room with the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the past, said no senior player reached out to him during his low phase. However, he said that Rishabh Pant has been in touch with him throughout. Prithvi Shaw also said that he was not shocked after no IPL team picked him in the IPL mega auction, saying he was 'mentally prepared.' Prithvi Shaw has played five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I for India. He will now represent another state as he has been given the No-Objection Certificate to leave Mumbai cricket. "I am on track now. I have gone back to basics now. The hard work I used to do 5 years ago, I think I have started that routine again. I believe in myself. I don't know how many people believe in me or not. But I believe in myself. I know how to get there. That's why I am doing all this," said Shaw. 'But one thing that dad has said. Only Prithvi Shaw can bring himself back there. No one else can. So I have left everything,' he added.
