The Dallas Stars have traded defenseman Matt Dumba and a 2028 second-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok. This move helps the Stars manage their salary cap, acquiring a younger player.
The Penguins gain a veteran blueliner and a valuable future draft asset.

2028 draft pick
In the unpredictable world of professional hockey, team executives often play a high-stakes game of chess, intriguing players and draft picks to gain an advantage. Recently, as the Dallas Stars decided to part ways with seasoned defenseman Matt Dumba, along with a 2028 second-round draft selection, a notable swap occurred, sending them to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In return, Dallas welcomed younger blueliner Vladislav Kolyachonok into their ranks.
This strategic exchange appears to be a clear move by the Stars to soothe some financial burden. Dumba, currently in the final year of a substantial two-season agreement, carried a significant financial commitment. The Stars were evidently "eager to rid themselves of the veteran defenseman's contract," especially given their 'win-now mode' and need for cap relief.
On the other side of the ledger, Pittsburgh's general manager, Kyle Dubas, is proving himself a shrewd operator. He "sure knows how to take advantage of teams when they're dealing with salary-cap issues." By taking on Dumba's remaining contract, the Penguins secured a crucial long-term asset in the 2028 second-round pick, even with his 'declined' performance in recent seasons.
This aligns with Dubas's detectable pattern of acquiring future draft capital by accommodating other teams' salary constraints.
As the commentary noted, "With all due respect to Dumba, this is all about the second-round pick." This mirrors past moves where Dubas embraced what "some deem as bad contracts in the short term to add solid future assets," like the accession of Kevin Hayes and Cody Glass.
For the Penguins, Dumba's arrival offers immediate defensive depth, particularly if they proceed with potential trades involving other key defensemen.
While Dumba 'might not be the player he once was,' he remains 'a reasonably solid NHL player' whose presence can only aid a defensive corps currently enduring struggles.

Furthermore, should the team face difficulties this season, Dumba could become "another asset that could be flipped," providing further flexibility. Meanwhile, Dallas integrates Kolyachonok, a potential talent claimed by Pittsburgh earlier on waivers, now offered with an opportunity to grow within a new system.

NBA trade rumor: De'Aaron Fox signs 4-year, $229M extension with San Antonio Spurs through 2030 season

De'Aaron Fox extended his contract with the San Antonio Spurs (Image via Getty Images) After signing with the San Antonio Spurs at the February NBA trade deadline, popular player De'Aaron Fox has inked a new contract with the team. The star and the team reached an agreement for a four-year contract extension worth a maximum of $229 million. Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports, informed ESPN that the maximum contract guarantees the player's future in San Antonio through the 2029-2030 season. De'Aaron Fox commits to San Antonio Spurs with a massive extension worth $229 million According to a source, De'Aaron Fox has consented to a maximum contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs. He was traded to the team in February of last year. The management has further invested in him now that he has committed to a four-year, $229 million agreement with the team. He previously inked a $163 million, five-year contract with the Sacramento Kings. After the 2025-2026 season, he would have been a free agent under that deal. A few months after he joined the San Antonio Spurs, he once stated that he had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the team over the offseason. On the other hand, the San Antonio Spurs made it apparent that they wanted the NBA player to stay with them for a long time, even though they already have two talented young players in their backcourt. An executive of the team told Spotrac's Keith Smith in July: 'When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course… We see De'Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We're hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.' De'Aaron Fox in action (image via Getty Images) De'Aaron Fox will, however, reach a new financial level with his new contract, as his average yearly compensation of $57.25 million would rank third in the league. He only played 18 games for San Antonio Spurs before being sidelined for the season due to a left pinky injury. He was also teamed with Victor Wembanyama , one of the league's top young players, with the hopes that the two may help the S.A. Spurs win their first title since 2014. Unfortunately, the management's decision to bench the icon for the home stretch of the 2024-25 season due to a blood clot in his shoulder put the team' plans on hold. Having said that, as of now, De'Aaron Fox is pretty happy with the new contract.
