Gracie Abrams is on the rise. The musician has been on tour for her The Secret of Us album, and last year, Abrams joined
Taylor Swift for the last leg of her Eras tour, which concluded in December after an epic two-year run. Abrams also opened for the 'Anti-Hero' singer during several of her 2023 shows too.
More recently, she's been supporting her boyfriend
Paul Mescal at the Cannes Film Festival; the pair wore matching black outfits, though they did not pose for photographs together. 'The bar is very high in my relationships,' she told Cosmopolitan in February. 'It's not appealing to me to not feel settled and seen, so I don't date people who make me feel like that. I would rather be single for the rest of my life than feel uneasy in a relationship.'

But
Gracie Abrams ' trajectory has long been plagued by nepo baby allegations: her father is filmmaker J.J. Abrams and her mother is producer Katie McGrath. 'Obviously we can't control where we are born into, and there are a million visible and even more invisible advantages to having family members who are in any entertainment industry,' the singer told Rolling Stone. 'I know how hard I work, and I know how separate I've kept [my parents] from every conversation about anything careerwise, but of course you can understand what it looks like from the outside.'
You might recognise J.J. Abrams for his work on Star Wars and Lost, but who is Katie McGrath, who was a 'proud mum' watching her daughter perform at one of Swift's shows?

Katie McGrath had a prolific career in politics before turning to public relations and production. Per People, she started off in Washington as Senator Ted Kennedy's legislative aide before taking on a directorial role at MTV Networks. Along the way, she also founded her own political media company, First Tuesday Media.

McGrath and Abrams have been married for 28 years and share three children, Henry, Gracie and August. McGrath, alongside her husband, is co-CEO of Bad Robot Productions, the production house behind several Star Trek films and mega-hit shows including Lost, Person of Interest and Westworld.

EU pushes for ‘independence' from China and US – but can it achieve it?

Over the same period, the European Union has held out an olive branch to Beijing, seeking concessions on economic matters in exchange for better political ties. The consensus now in Brussels is that China has chosen not to grab it Sandwiched between two uncompromising superpowers, a growing number of European leaders are pushing for Europe to become a more self-reliant force. They want the bloc to free itself from dangerous dependencies on the US for defence and technology, on China for raw materials and cleantech goods, and on Russia for energy. 'A new international order will emerge in this decade,' European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week. 'If we do not want to simply accept the consequences this will have for Europe and the world, we must shape this new order. History does not forgive either dithering or delaying. Our mission is European independence.' French President Emmanuel Macron – the biggest champion of strategic autonomy – agreed.

UK plans solar panel ‘revolution' for new homes

New homes built in Britain will have rooftop solar panels 'by default', reducing energy bills and helping to meet carbon-reduction targets, the Labour government announced on Friday. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's party wants 1.5 million new homes built by 2029 amid a housing shortage, a figure many experts believe is optimistic. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said proposals announced on Friday mark 'a monumental step in unleashing this rooftop revolution'. The government said: 'New homes will also have low-carbon heating, such as heat pumps and high levels of energy efficiency, cutting people's energy bills and boosting the nation's energy security with clean, home-grown power.' It added in a statement that 'a typical existing UK home could save around £530 (US$717) a year from installing rooftop solar'. 02:08 Dozens dead as monsoon rains and landslides wreak havoc in northeast India Dozens dead as monsoon rains and landslides wreak havoc in northeast India 'The proposed Future Homes Standard would see building regulations amended to explicitly promote solar for the first time, subject to practical limits with flexibility in place for new homes surrounded by trees or with lots of shade overhead,' the government said.

Welcome to Wrexham, that'll be US$475 million please. Hollywood pair looking to cash in

Wrexham AFC, the Welsh football club co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are reportedly looking to sell a stake in the team that would set the franchise's valuation at US$475 million. Sources said the club was looking for an investor to join the Hollywood stars, who bought Wrexham for US$2.5 million in late 2020. Since then, the team have become the subject of a popular documentary series on FX – Welcome to Wrexham – and have earned promotion through England's system for a record three straight years. Internal talks were focused on how to raise capital to help Wrexham compete in the Championship next season, one step below the Premier League, with the latter arguably the top football league in the world. The projected value would represent a nearly 19,000 per cent jump in the team's worth in less than five years. Rob McElhenney (left) and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham in late 2020.
