Michael Phelps teaches Ravens players to swim
Phelps visited Ravens training camp this week and worked with the players, many of whom had so little experience in the water that they weren't comfortable getting in any deeper than they could comfortably stand.
'I didn't know what I was getting into. I had no idea what their comfort level was,' Phelps told the Ravens' website. 'When I see the guys in there and some of the guys who are literally working on floating and breathing, and they're focused on paying attention to those details, it shows their vulnerability, especially when they're uncomfortable. It was a special day. Racing some of the fellas in the 25 [meter]. My son raced some of the guys. It was a great day. I truly hope they learned something, hopefully got some confidence, and hopefully can transition into something else.'
Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith was among several players who thought the lessons from Phelps were beneficial, not only for their use of the team facility but for their lives.
'If I have to swim less than 20 yards, I could survive somehow because I could doggy paddle,' Smith said. 'But as far as actually swimming and knowing how to breathe and things of that nature, honestly, it was my first time. It was really cool. It was really solid, some of the lessons they gave me. I feel a little more confident.'
Teaching people to swim has become one of Phelps' missions since retiring from competitive swimming. The Michael Phelps Foundation promotes learning to swim for drowning prevention, and the mental and physical health benefits of swimming.

DB Reuben Lowery Ravens' undrafted free agent cornerback Reuben Lowery has caught the attention of head coach John Harbaugh, and the versatile defensive back is inching towards a coveted roster spot in the deep Baltimore secondary. Lowery has been making plays that could push a key starter or contributors onto the roster bubble at Ravens training camp. LB Jay Higgins Undrafted inside linebacker Jay Higgins IV helped his bid to make the roster in the preseason opener with an interception, three tackles, and two pass breakups. Higgins played plenty of special teams at Iowa, which helps his chances. I'm interested to see what he does against Dallas. RB Rasheen Ali Baltimore didn't draft a running back and only has four players on the roster at the position. Henry is an All-Pro, Justice Hill is a solid No. 2 running back, and Keaton Mitchell provides a home run threat. Ali needs a strong preseason to warrant the Ravens carrying four running backs. WR Malik Cunningham Baltimore has ten wide receivers on the roster after selecting Colorado's LaJohntay Wester in Round 6. Cunningham is the only player in the position who is not a natural wide receiver but offers special-teams abilities. Cunningham needs an intense training camp to warrant a roster spot over Dayton Wade, Anthony Miller, and Keith Kirkwood. DT-C.J. Okoye Okoye, a Nigerian native, first joined the Chargers as part of the International Player Pathway Program. He had a sack in his first organized football game in the preseason. He'll compete in a position group that includes Nnamdi Madubuike, Travis Jones, John Jenkins, and Jayson Jones. OL Corey Bullock Bullock was an honorable mention All-Big Ten after starting 11 games for the Terrapins in 2023. According to Pro Football Focus, Bullock was ranked as the second-highest-rated pass-blocking guard in the Big Ten conference, with a 79.6 grade via the Terrapins' official website. After a season spent on the Ravens' practice squad, he'll look to carve out a backup role.

Kishane Thompson eclipsed Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles at the Silesia Diamond League meet on Saturday and Keely Hodgkinson made an impressive comeback over 800m a year since winning gold at the Paris Games. A host of world and Olympic champions headlined by the likes of Karsten Warholm -- with an incredible performance in the 400m hurdles -- Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis, Faith Kipyegon and Femke Bol shone in hot and humid conditions in front of more than 40,000 fans in the Polish city of Chorzow. In their first meeting since Lyles won Olympic gold by just five-thousandths of a second in Paris last year, Thompson made an electric start and led from gun to tape for victory in 9.87sec. "My job is to get the job done," said Thompson. "I enjoyed competition against Noah today... nobody is perfect, but I am working on improving my strengths and improving on my weaknesses. "Paris last year was a big learning factor. I learned it is me against myself." Lyles had to be content with second in 9.90sec as the athletes fine-tune preparations for the September 13-21 world championships in Tokyo. "It makes me really excited for not only today, but also for next week and Tokyo," the American said. "The more I run, the better I am getting. I get more excited each day and it is working. I need to keep competing." There was a timely return for Hodgkinson as the 23-year-old Briton showed no sign of the lingering hamstring problems that had sidelined her for months as she clocked 1min 54.74sec, the fastest in the world this year. "I was just happy to step on the track after more than a year," Hodgkinson said. "I planned to run a fast time because I don't have five races anymore before Tokyo, I only have today and the meeting in Lausanne next week. So it had to be fast and I'm happy that it worked." "This win is very important to me becaue these are the women I'm going to be racing against at the world champs," said Russell. One player in particular that is beginning to garner national attention is cornerback Nate Wiggins, who enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign in 2024 when he registered 33 tackles, an interception (which he returned for a touchdown) and 13 passes defended in 15 games. He also managed a 70.7 overall grade at Pro Football Focus. Baltimore still has a long way to go before worrying about the former first-round pick's contract, but ESPN's Seth Walder seems to believe the Ravens won't waste any time in handing him a new deal. In fact, he thinks Baltimore will lock up Wiggins as soon as he becomes eligible for an extension. "He had a strong rookie campaign, allowing 0.9 yards per coverage snap (better than average) and minus-28 EPA allowed as the nearest defender (best among all outside corners), per NFL Next Gen Stats." Cornerbacks certainly became rich this offseason. First, Jaycee Horn signed a record-setting extension with the Carolina Panthers. Houston Texans star Derek Stingley Jr. then broke his record just over a week later. Finally, last month, the New York Jets inked Sauce Gardner to a record-breaking deal. There is no doubt he is trending upward, and within a couple of years, the 21-year-old may very well be the best the cornerback position has to offer.
