‘Tough, but not impossible': After Deepika Padukone's 8-hour work demand, Genelia and Chitrangda share their thoughts
One of the most talked about controversies in Tinsel Town this month was Deepika Padukone's exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's next film Spirit and the rumoured reasons behind it. Some reports suggested that Deepika walked out because she was uncomfortable doing bold scenes whereas other rumours claimed that the new mother demanded a strict 8-hour work day, 6 of them being shoot time. Almost everyone in the industry had an opinion about the work schedule debate, speaking from their personal experiences. The latest in this list are Deepika's fellow actors Genelia Deshmukh and Chitrangda Singh.

Genelia Deshmukh is currently busy gearing up for her next release Sitaare Zameen Par, co-starring Aamir Khan. In a recent chat with Zoom, the actor and mother of two children opened up about managing her work life, personal life and making adjustments along the way. Genelia was quoted saying, 'It is tough, but it is not impossible. I do work for 10 hours a day, and there are days when the director asks to extend it to 11 or 12 hours. I think it's fair, but we just need time to make those adjustments. When you have a day or two where you have to overdo, it's also an understanding and a process that needs to be done.'

Housefull 5 actor Chitrangda Singh, on the other hand, had a neutral approach on this debate. She claimed that it all depends on the personal relationship of an actor and a director and the requirements of a filmmaker. Talking to IANS, Chitrangda explained that if a filmmaker can manage the work-schedule requested by an actor, they might agree to work around it. However, sometimes this is not possible because of time and money restraints.

Talking about Deepika's rumoured reason for exiting Spirit, Chitrangda shared, 'So I feel it is everyone's own choice and I think Deepika is a very big actress and it is her right to make a choice, it's her privilege to make a choice.'
Animal star Triptii Dimri has now been roped in by Sandeep Reddy Vanga for Prabhas-starrer Spirit. Deepika, on the other hand, has announced her next film with Atlee and Allu Arjun, tentatively titled AA22xA6.

New Delhi: Prabhas-led Raja Saab - India's biggest horror-comedy set brings a haunted 200-year-old palace to life. Located just a few kilometres from Hyderabad, this massive mansion spans over 42,000 square feet and is entirely hand-built, not VFX-created. The palace plays a crucial role in the film, adding a unique visual appeal that director Maruthi describes as "a character in itself." Built at a massive cost over two months, this grand set has stood for more than a year - and will remain for a few more months as filming continues. "It's a Prabhas film. Everything had to be larger than life, just like the actor. That's what the audience expects, and that's what we've created," Maruthi told exclusively to NDTV. The palace is no ordinary film set. It features rooms that look straight out of a gothic novel - a black magic room with real fire burning (managed under strict safety protocols), a torture chamber, a sprawling library, eerie corridors lined with hanging roots, and bedrooms that could belong to a forgotten royal. Every detail, from handmade pillars to realistic trees and roots, was designed to make you feel like you're inside an actual haunted palace. The production design team revealed that the inspiration came from years of reading, travelling, and sketching. "Old houses we've seen while traveling, books we've read - all of that shaped this palace. It's a huge team effort. I get the credit, but over 1,000 people worked on this, and countless drafts and sketches were made before we arrived at the final design," the team head shared. Raja Saab, starring Prabhas and directed by Maruthi, hits cinemas on December 5, 2025.

Box Office: Sitaare Zameen Par registers low pre-sales in international markets; Aamir Khan starrer relies on strong word of mouth
Aamir Khan's much awaited Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna, is gearing up for a grand theatrical release on the 20th June, 2025. It is Aamir Khan 's first release since Laal Singh Chaddha. The movie revolves around a basketball coach who is asked to train a bunch of specially-abled children. While the India advance bookings of the movie have not opened at the time of this article, the bookings have opened internationally. Sitaare Zameen Par's Advance Bookings Open On A Slow Note In International Markets The bookings of Sitaare Zameen Par in international markets is not upto the mark. The movie has not even sold 1000 tickets in traditional international markets like Australia and US-Canada for the opening day, 3 days out. If the pace of advance bookings does not increase, the movie may even struggle for a USD 2 million opening weekend. For perspective, the actor's own Dhoom 3 grossed over 8 million over its opening weekend. Yes, both Dhoom 3 and Sitaare Zameen Par are very different from one another. However, a quarter of the former's opening weekend business is not the result Aamir Khan and team would fancy. The awareness for the movie is there but the urgency to watch it in theatres is not there. Audiences these days are preferring to watch something that gives a bang for their buck and that happens if the movie promises a big screen experience. R.S. Prasanna on making ‘Sitaare Zameen Par'
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated June 23, 2025)When the whole world was in lockdown, my world was opening up,' says filmmaker R.S. Prasanna. The year was 2020 and Prasanna, then living in Chennai, had managed to land a meeting, albeit virtual, with Aamir Khan. Best known for directing the comedy Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, a remake of his sleeper Tamil hit, it was a dream Prasanna says he didn't dare dream. Convincing the pernickety Khan about a script is no easy feat, but Prasanna and writer Divya Nidhi Sharma managed to grab his attention with a funny tale about a man who comes of age as he trains a basketball team of neurodivergent individuals. Five years later, that pitch has manifested as Sitaare Zameen Par, which Khan has also in the Aamir Khan Productions office in Santa Cruz, Mumbai, Prasanna expresses sentiments which Khan would concur with. He talks of his 'responsibility as a storyteller', which entails reaching out to the audience with stories that come from 'the heart'. He speaks of having no 'insecurity' despite being absent from the filmmaking scene for almost seven years. And he emphasises the need to have 'conviction'.But that very conviction wavered a bit as he came into the orbit of the mercurial Aamir Khan, one of the last superstars of Indian cinema. Says Prasanna, 'I was full of anxiety, I had imposter syndrome, I couldn't believe I was directing him. I was like, 'Of course, he is going to call you out.'' An eight-hour-long conversation, which started over South Indian breakfast, allayed those fears and brought an immediate sense of comfort. 'Aamir sir is quite open and one who only sees talent and passion for cinema and no other identity marker,' says Prasanna. 'I usually call him the Atlantis, [for] he is like the refugee camp of passionate filmmakers. He is very protective about the director and empowers them.'advertisement Passion alone doesn't drive Prasanna. He'd prefer the word 'obsession'. 'I'm told you are too involved. You have to give it everything. There's no ego and hierarchy, you take inputs from everyone.' It's perhaps why he sees himself as a misfit and has made a comedy about working with other individuals whom society perceives as misfits. CHANGING PERCEPTIONS Aamir Khan with his team of 'misfits' in Sitaare Zameen Par, which releases on June 20 Central to Sitaare Zameen Par was a cast of individuals diagnosed with autism and Down's Syndrome. Over 2,500 auditions were conducted, with casting directors Tess Joseph and Anmol Ahuja taking charge. Finally, 10 were finalised and put through workshops. 'They are my stars,' says Prasanna. 'They have josh, a positive spirit and a keeda to perform. You just have to give them the tools on how to face the camera and learn the lines.' Their presence, adds Prasanna, made the set a happier place. A paediatrician who champions for inclusion and works with neurodivergent people was present during the shoot to like other films in Khan's rich filmography, this one comes packaged with a social message. 'Today, we live in a world where we don't connect with anybody, forget neurodivergent people,' says Prasanna. With the film, he hopes that audiences remember the child within themselves. 'You are born with purity and being non-judgemental. It's only later we learn to discriminate.'Sitaare Zameen Par arrives at a time when the yardstick of what works at the box office has undergone a seismic shift. Loud spectacles with hypermasculine heroes are favoured over slice-of-life soft outings. Khan's last film, Laal Singh Chaddha, a remake of the Hollywood hit Forrest Gump, crashed at the box office. Sitaare Zameen Par, which has been pegged as a 'spiritual sequel' to Khan's own directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par, is inspired by a Spanish film, Campeones (2018). Prasanna isn't too worried that the film may seem an anomaly in the current landscape. 'Everyone wants a palate-cleanser. A film works if it entertains and has a strong emotional connect with people,' he says. 'Everything changes with one thing.
