'Not coming back': Selwyn Cobbo cops massive new blow after Broncos axing

Selwyn Cobbo might be hard-pressed getting back into the Broncos' first-grade team anytime soon after Josiah Karapani bagged a double and looked very strong on Saturday night. Karapani scored two of Brisbane's eight tries as the Broncos bounced back to form with a 44-14 thrashing of the Titans. Starting in place of the axed Cobbo, Karapani had 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks. The 23-year-old, who'd only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night, doubled his career try tally and looked every bit an NRL player. He vindicated coach Michael Maguire's decision to bring him in to replace Cobbo, after also getting the nod over regular first-grader Deine Mariner. Cobbo was spotted at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and helped the team run through their warmup drills. He appeared to be in good spirits, and reportedly took his demotion well. Maguire explained the decision to dump him to reserve grade on Friday, saying: "As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we're pushing standards here and expectations in how we're doing things, and Karapani's got his opportunity and Selly's got to look at a few things in his game. "(Karapani) has been really consistent in the way he's been playing through the pre -season ... and he's obviously experienced first grade. When he has played, he's played really well. I know he'll do a good job." Maguire refused to divulge on the areas of Cobbo's game he wants to see improved, but said he "definitely" could force his way back into the side. "I'm here to coach the team. We're creating standards and ... the more you meet those, the more opportunities you have," Maguire said. Complicating the situation with Cobbo is the fact he's off-contract at the end of 2025. According to reports, the Broncos haven't tabled him a formal offer and have prioritised the re-signing of centre Kotoni Staggs. With Gehamat Shibasaki and Jesse Arthars proving themselves as genuine first-graders, and Grant Anderson set to join the Broncos from Melbourne in 2026, it's looking increasingly likely that Cobbo will depart. If the Broncos choose to keep Cobbo, it'll likely be a one-year extension that would allow him to chase the riches on offer at expansion teams Perth or PNG from 2027. Unless there's an injury or Reece Walsh is called up for State of Origin duty for Queensland, Cobbo is set for a decent stint in Queensland Cup. One person wrote on social media: "When the media chimed up and slated Madge from dropping Cobbo, you just knew Karapani would salute. He did. Brilliant." Another wrote: "Karapani has got to retain his position after tonight. I like him a lot more than Cobbo on that wing." While a third added: "Cobbo aint coming back into this side anytime soon. Just the response we needed. Karapani has stood up." Karapani has got to retain his position after tonight. Ohio State softball coaching staff receives impressive honor

Ohio State softball coaching staff receives impressive honor Coming into the 2025 season, the Ohio State softball team wasn't expected to be much of a player in the Big Ten. The team lost a lot of its offensive production and was ushering in a new head coach and staff. By all accounts and measures, it was a turn-the-page kind of year, one that would perceivably need a lot of patience and grace. But a funny thing happened in a year of uncertainty. The team led the entire country in several offensive categories, including home runs and RBIs en route to a tie for fourth place in the Big Ten and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Region. Things ended there, but it was something to build on, and something to point towards some promise for years ahead. And now, for all of its efforts, the Ohio State softball coaching staff was recognized as the NFCA Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year on Friday. That not only includes head coach Kirin Kumar, but also assistant coaches Matthew Guemmer and Courtney Vierstra. The Buckeyes won 45 games in 2025 and led the country by scoring 495 runs. OSU also set school records for doubles (102), runs per game (8.25), and slugging percentage (.701). It also became the first team in NCAA history to have four players hit 20 or more home runs in a season. This isn't the first time Kumar and her staff have won coaching staff of the year in the region. Her group of coaches was also recognized at Miami (OH) in 2021, 2023, and 2024. Vierstra came with Kumar from Oxford, while Guemmer joined her in Columbus after being an assistant at Rutgers. The NFCA's Great Lakes Region is comprised of 34 teams from 10 different conferences. The Big Ten members in the region are Indiana, Michigan, Northwestern, and Wisconsin.

Coveted Star Visits Michigan Immediately After Ohio State Meetings

Coveted Star Visits Michigan Immediately After Ohio State Meetings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Ohio State Buckeyes are pushing hard to land the top recruit from Texas. But they have Big Ten competition for the prospect. Advertisement One week after five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo officially visited the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, Ojo will be in Ann Arbor, Michigan to see the Michigan Wolverines during the first full weekend of June. "Felix Ojo has been a busy man. He has already taken official visits to Colorado, Florida, Ohio State and Ole Miss," On3's Chad Simmons wrote. "The five-star offensive tackle out of Texas will be in Ann Arbor this weekend and the Wolverines have some ground to make up. Texas is setting the pace and Ohio State looks to be the Longhorns' top competition heading into the weekend. "Can the Wolverines become a contender? This is their chance. They would love to dip into Texas, like they did with Ty Haywood a year ago, and steal one." Ohio State Buckeyes football head coach Ryan Day© Kyle Robertson/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images One could argue the Buckeyes are trying to "steal" Ojo instead. Based on Simmons' assessment, Ohio State has a better chance of landing the five-star recruit. Advertisement But the question is whether Michigan can move the needle for Ojo this weekend. Ojo had already posted a picture from the beginning of his Ann Arbor visit early Friday morning. Based on the 247 Sports composite rankings, Ojo is the No. 2 offensive tackle and top Texas recruit in the 2026 class. Ojo is also a top 10 recruit overall, sitting at No. 7 on the 247 Sports composite rankings for the entire class. The tackle will play his final high school season at Lake Ridge in Mansfield, Texas this fall.
