7,435 People Killed On Mumbai Suburban Rail Network During 2022-24, Govt Tells Rajya Sabha
Last Updated: A total of 5,336 deaths occurred in block sections—the stretches between stations—and 2,099 deaths were reported at station premises The Indian Railways on Friday shared a detailed breakdown of unnatural deaths on the Mumbai suburban network, revealing that 7,435 fatalities were recorded between 2022 and 2024, with most occurring between stations. A total of 5,336 deaths occurred in block sections—the stretches between stations—and 2,099 deaths were reported at station premises. In terms of daily average, around seven people died unnaturally on the Mumbai suburban lines—five on the block section and two at stations—in the last three calendar years. In a reply in Rajya Sabha on Friday, the ministry said that 1,764, 1,880, and 1,692 incidents of unnatural deaths in block sections and 662, 656, and 781 incidents of unnatural deaths at stations have been registered in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively. The analysis of the data shows that a total of 2,426 people died in 2022, then 2,536 in 2023, and 2,473 in 2024. The analysis also shows that in 2024, while deaths between stations dropped to a three-year low of 1,692, fatalities at station premises rose to 781—the highest during the period. 'These figures include the deaths due to falling from trains, trespassing or crossing tracks unauthorisedly, and various other reasons such as pole hitting," the ministry added. Railways said that the introduction of AC local trains equipped with automatic doors in Mumbai has been a welcome initiative to enhance commuters' safety and reduce incidents related to overcrowding. 'The automatic doors prevent passengers from hanging on footboards or boarding moving trains which is a major cause of fatal accidents. These doors remain closed while the train is in motion and open only at stations when the train is stationary, thereby significantly reducing the risk of falls," it added. To enhance suburban rail capacity, the ministry has sanctioned 238 rakes of 12 cars at a cost of Rs 19,293 crore. Listing the other measures to improve the situation, the ministry said it is also running various awareness and sensitisation campaigns using social, digital, and print media. 'Frequent announcements are made at railway stations using Loud Hailers as well as through Public Announcement systems cautioning passengers against crossing tracks, boarding moving trains and travelling on footboards… Legal action is taken against persons travelling on train rooftops, footboards and other restricted places of the train formation," it added. Last month, the ministry had said that the suburban railway network saw 2,282 deaths in 2024, different from what was said on Friday. It had also said that 60% of these deaths were reported in Mumbai, with the causes ranging from trespassing, pole hitting, falling from running trains, and falling in platform gaps. Mumbai accounted for the largest share with 1,408 fatalities, followed by Thane (615), Navi Mumbai (131), and Raigarh (128), according to the data. In June this year, eight passengers fell off two trains near Mumbra station, resulting in five fatalities. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Kovur's growth boosts infrastructure, but waste disposal remains a concern
Kovur, a once quiet, green village in Chennai's western suburbs, is undergoing rapid development. Situated around five kilometres from Porur along the Porur-Kundrathur Road, the area, part of Kundrathur taluk in Kancheepuram district, has seen significant changes in recent years — from new high-rises built by prominent real estate firms to improved roads. Long-time residents recall a very different Kovur. 'It used to be covered in trees and bushes. People rarely visited the periya kovil because it was hard to reach,' said M. Rajeshwari, who has lived in the area for over 30 years. The 'periya kovil' she referred to is the historic Sundareswarar Temple, built during the Chozha period. According to historian V. Sriram, the temple also has a cultural legacy — Tyagaraja, the famed Carnatic composer, created five keerthanais here in the 1830s after being invited by East India Company's chief dubash Kovur Sundaresa Mudali. Improved accessibility has brought more visitors to the temple, but infrastructure still lags in places. During a recent visit to Kovur, restrooms built by government authorities under the HR&CE department were found locked. Locals said the facility is functional, but sometimes remains closed when the assigned caretaker is absent. Elsewhere, signs of urban development are more visible. 'Most of the old tiled-roof houses are gone. People have rebuilt them as two- or three-storey buildings,' said Thaayamma, who runs a grocery shop. D. Revathi, another resident, notes that the re-laid roads have made everyday commuting much easier. Open garbage dumping Despite the many positives, Kovur is also starting to show early signs of urban strain. The most pressing concern is the increasing open dumping of garbage. Though the residents say that waste is collected every two days, it is often dumped in open areas outside the panchayat limits — particularly along the service road south of the Chennai Bypass toward Tambaram. On August 1, heaps of plastic and domestic waste were seen burning in these open spaces, releasing smoke into the air. A panchayat official acknowledged the issue, stating that while recent funds were directed toward roadwork and underground sewer projects, steps are being taken to prioritise waste segregation. Plans are under way to improve recycling, particularly of plastic waste, the official said. While Kovur currently escapes problems like rainwater stagnation and stray cattle that plague more densely populated suburbs, unchecked growth and poor waste management could steer it in the same problematic direction, said residents.

CM Patel inaugurates urban forest park in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, Aug 8 (PTI) Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday inaugurated an urban forest park developed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation using the Miyawaki method in Lambha area of the city. He also unveiled a statue of tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda on the occasion, an official release said. The Miyawaki method, invented by a Japanese botanist, involves planting a variety of native trees and shrubs close together to mimic a natural forest system. The urban forest has been developed over 4,464 square meters at a cost of Rs 55 lakh under the public-private partnership model, and houses some 8,000 indigenous trees including teak, khair (Cutch tree), bamboo, siris (Albizia lebbeck), sissu (Dalbergia sissoo) and arjun (Terminalia arjuna). It also includes a 250-meter walkway. To transform Ahmedabad into a green city, the municipal corporation has launched the campaign `Mission Four Million Trees 2025" with a target of planting 40 lakh trees, and 27,11,443 trees have been planted so far, the release said. With 66.77 per cent of the target achieved, the AMC is set to complete the remaining plantation work in the coming days, it added. The corporation has so far developed 198 `oxygen parks' or urban forests using the Miyawaki method and dense plantation techniques. Ahmedabad has a total of 310 public gardens. The Garden Department has planted more than one crore trees across the city in the last six years, said the release.
