Jumbo blow for Pahang
Delivering the goods: Pahang's T. Saravanan (right) scored against JDT in the Malaysia Cup final.
PETALING JAYA: Striker T. Saravanan scored a splendid goal for Pahang in the Malaysia Cup final two weeks ago. It was probably his last for the team.
Pahang are closing down and Saravanan, along with his teammates, has had to bid goodbye.
In a cryptic posting on social media, Saravanan wrote: 'Thank you so much Pahang.'
Although there was no official statement, it is learnt the Malaysia Cup runners-up Pahang, who lost 1-2 to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the final last month, are pulling out of the Super League next season - adding more misery to a beleaguered domestic football scene.
Playmaker Sergio Aguero is another player who had to say goodbye in an unhappy manner. His last outing, the Malaysia Cup final, saw him being sent off after two yellow cards.
After the match, he was left apologising to the fans, teammates and coach.
Yesterday, he was again in a despondent mood as he posted his farewell on Instagram.
'Today, I find it hard to put into words what Pahang mean to me. Five years ago, I arrived here as a stranger. I didn't know what to expect – all I had was a dream and a heart full of hope.
'But from the first day, Pahang welcomed me with open arms.
'Through every battle on the pitch, every moment of victory and defeat, I wore the Pahang jersey with pride, knowing I was part of something special.
'Because of Pahang, I grew not just as a player, but as a person. You made me one of your own – and with your blessing, I was even able to call Malaysia my home through citizenship.
'That honour ... I will carry with me for the rest of my life. No matter where football takes me next, Pahang will always be in my heart.'
While goalkeeper Azfar Arif also said goodbye, another player, who did not want to be named, said: 'The team coordinator gave us the letters and told us the status of the club. It looks like we have to move on and look for other clubs.'
Pahang's exit will see them joining Perak, who became the first team to leave the league due to unpaid salary issues.
However, Pahang have yet to make an official announcement on their status with the club licensing deadline tomorrow.
It had earlier been reported that team owner Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah was stepping down but now, it is learnt the club themselves will leave the scene.
This season, the side coached by Singaporean legend Fandi Ahmad finished eighth in the league but made it to the Malaysia Cup final where they lost 1-2 to JDT.
The team, established in 1959, have been one of the biggest teams in the local landscape. The Elephants won the Division One title four times (1987, 1992, 1995 and 1999) and the Super League in 2004.
They have also won the Malaysia Cup four times (1983, 1992, 2013 and 2014) and the FA Cup three times (2006, 2014, and 2018). But with powerhouse JDT sweeping all before them, Pahang have been trophy-less since 2018.

Harimau Malaya better equipped to defy the odds against Vietnam
THE head-to-head record favours Vietnam, but Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski believes his men are ready to tear the formbook to pieces when the two teams meet in their second Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here tomorrow. Malaysia last defeated Vietnam 4-2 in the semi-finals of the 2014 AFF Cup in Hanoi and, since then, have lost seven times and drawn once against Vietnam across all competitions. So, why does the Australian tactician feel that Malaysia are better equipped than ever to turn the tide and end their decade-long winless streak against the Golden Star Warriors? Two factors stand out: one is the presence of seven new heritage players and the other is that the team have had a proper training camp ahead of this crucial tie. Cklamovski believes the arrival of the heritage players, together with the presence of the local and naturalised players, will give Harimau Malaya more solidity at the back, creativity in midfield and bite up front. The seven heritage players in the squad are strikers Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca and Joao Figueiredo; defenders Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces and Gabriel Palmero; and midfielder Hector Hevel. Cklamovski is also satisfied with the players' commitment throughout the centralised training camp, which began on May 19, saying he believes they now have a clear understanding of the football philosophy he is trying to implement. 'It's been sharp, and again, our physical numbers keep improving. We're looking forward to turning all of that into a team performance tomorrow night,' the 46-year-old coach said at a pre-match press conference here today. Vietnam and Malaysia currently share the top spot in Group F with three points each after winning their opening matches. With Vietnam having held the upper hand over them for so long, will it stifle the Harimau Malaya players' tomorrow, or will it spur them to defy the odds? Cklamovski had this to say: 'Instead of being fearful of that (record against Vietnam), it's a challenge that the players and all the staff in our environment want to embrace... and that opportunity is in front of us.' Meanwhile, national team captain Matthew Davies said the backline will not take anything for granted despite Vietnam missing two key attackers - Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Xuan Son. The Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) player said they'd rather focus on the team's overall performance rather than individual displays. 'I think one of the differences I've noticed under Peter (Cklamovski) is that we're more focused on how we play as a group rather than our individual performances. 'We're also focusing on ourselves rather than the opposition. So, while we're aware (of Vietnam's strength) and we respect them, I think we'll be more focused on what we do tomorrow night,' said the 30-year-old player.

Hevel hopes to be on another level with Harimau Malaya
KUALA LUMPUR: For Hector Hevel (pic), it's more than just a game. It's a moment to honour his heritage, solidify his place in Harimau Malaya, and push Harimau Malaya closer to 2027 Asian Cup qualification. The midfielder, who is set to join Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), is expected to play a key role in Malaysia's 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Vietnam next Tuesday at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil and he's buzzing with excitement. 'Honestly, I'm happy to be back,' said Hevel during a press conference at the Hyatt Place here yesterday. 'The team are working well, the coach has a clear idea, and we're building on the structure and style we developed in the last camp. Every day, things are improving. We're more comfortable with the way we play.' Hevel, 28, is part of the recent wave of Malaysian heritage players brought into the national set-up. His roots trace back to Melaka through his grandfather, and while he's yet to visit the state, the connection was enough to initiate conversations about representing Malaysia. 'It came from my grandfather's side,' said the Dutch-born player. 'From there, discussions began, and we did the paperwork. People close to the national set-up helped, and now I'm here to contribute. ''I hope to visit Melaka soon and learn more about where my family came from.' Since his debut against Nepal in March, where he scored and impressed, Hevel has quickly become a fan favourite. But he remains grounded, refusing to buckle under the weight of expectations. 'Of course, scoring in your first game creates expectations, but I don't feel pressure like that. I just try to help, whether it's scoring, assisting, organising play or just executing the coach's plan. Football isn't only about goals, it's about doing your part to get the result.' Malaysia's recent struggles against Vietnam, which they haven't won in the last few meetings, have been a talking point in the camp, and Hevel sees it as motivation, not a burden. 'We know it's been a long time since we beat them. That's our trigger. They're a good team, but so are we. We've done the analysis. We know our weapons. Now, it's all about execution.' With five newcomers - Facundo Garces, Imanol Machuca, Rodrigo Holgado, Jon Iranzabal and Joao Figueiredo - from overseas joining the squad this window, Hevel is playing a mentor's role, helping others adapt quickly to the system. 'Adapting is key. The match is coming fast, so the guys have to feel comfortable as soon as possible. The rest of us are helping them settle in. It's not about pressure on the new boys, we all carry the responsibility. The goal is clear - win on Tuesday.'

Hot Aguero in centre of transfer tug-of-war
PETALING JAYA: Sergio Aguero's name is generating considerable buzz as the Malaysian football transfer window officially swings open. The 31-year-old naturalised Argentinian, who impressed with Pahang last season and turned heads with a stellar outing for the Asean All-Stars in their shock 1-0 win over Manchester United last month, finds himself at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war. Brunei's official website boldly claimed they were close to securing his signature. But Aguero was quick to set the record straight, saying nothing has been signed yet. 'I haven't put pen to paper,' he clarified. 'There are several offers from Super League clubs and also Indonesia, and I'm still weighing my options. Once the window opens, I will decide but for now, I am focused on staying in peak condition before joining any team for pre-season.' Aguero, a creative force in midfield, is currently training intensely with a personal coach, determined to hit the ground running wherever he ends up. 'I am preparing very hard. The season ahead will be long and demanding, as always. I want to give 100% for whichever team I represent,' he said. 'I will have to make a decision soon since most clubs are finalising their squads. I have had some offers but I'm still thinking it through.' The decision isn't just about which club suit him best but it's also about reigniting his international ambitions. Aguero is eyeing a return to the Harimau Malaya squad and is keen to play a part in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers. But the path back into the national fold won't be easy. The competition for playmaking roles has intensified under head coach Peter Cklamovski, especially with the emergence of several mixed-heritage talents. Currently, the likes of Endrick Dos Santos, Imanol Machuca, and Nazmi Faiz Mansor are ahead in the pecking order. Still, Aguero isn't one to shy away from a challenge. 'Of course, I will work even harder than before. I want to be the best version of myself and earn that call-up again,' he said with conviction. 'Yes, the new names in the team are very good but I believe in myself and what I can offer on the field. I always have hope.' With clubs circling and ambition burning bright, Aguero's next move could well shape not just his club future but his international redemption story too.
