The best make-up under £15, from lipstick to blusher

Telegraph14-03-2025

There's a common misconception that the more money you spend on a beauty product, the better it will be. But in my 12 years as a beauty editor, one of the most valuable things I've learnt is not to judge a book by its cover – a quality formula can, and often does, come wrapped up in cheaper packaging.
Budget make-up is excellent nowadays – as I see on TikTok, where impressive routines made up of budget buys alone garner tens of hundreds and thousands of views. According to research by Mintel, 74 per cent of make-up wearers believe that affordable formulas work just as well as premium ones. We just don't really want to admit it because, despite this, 41 per cent still prefer to buy premium make-up.
In my view, there are certain formulas one can save on, and others that deserve a little extra budget set aside to pay for them. So, here's how I concoct my own make-up bag, a high-low affair that doesn't break the bank.
Mascara
Budget mascara formulas are incredibly good – and whether you want lengthening, volumising or both, there's something for everyone. I have long loved Rimmel's mascaras, and the new Wonder Bond Lash Filler + Hyaluronic Mascara is incredible at delivering a fan of fluttery lashes, plus it's infused with hyaluronic acid and a biotin bonding complex to nourish each hair. Max Factor's new False Lash Effect Supreme Recharge Mascara is refillable (the refill costs £9.99) and promises to ramp up volume, and L'Oréal Paris's Paradise Big Deal Mascara boasts a clever brush, which makes it easy to get in between lashes for optimal definition. All are under £15.

Brows
From finely-tipped pencils that make it easy to draw on hairs (see Elf's Ultra Precise Brow) to grooming gels that create a feathery 'lamination' effect (L'Oréal Paris's Infallible Brow Lamination), it's easy to get a really decent brow routine on the high street.

Blusher
While I tend to spend more on complexion products, blusher is one product that I think you can get away with saving on. Lots of affordable brands have launched cream-based formulations in recent years, and the good ones melt into skin and leave a really natural, dewy flush. Maybelline's Cheek Heat, H&M Beauty's Do-It-All Stick and Max Factor's Miracle Pure Infused Cream Blush are all under £10 and impart a dewy, hydrated finish to the cheeks. For those that prefer a powder consistency, Nyx's Buttermelt Blush swooshes on, no cakeiness in sight.

Lipstick
You really can't go wrong with a budget lipstick – mass brands invest in good quality formulations that are loaded with skincare benefits to hydrate and treat the lips while in situ, with the knowledge that lipstick is a big seller. Some favourites include No7's Moisture Drench Lipstick ('Blush' is a lovely rosy nude), Maybelline's SuperStay Vinyl Ink Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick (will not budge) and Morphe's Good Talk Blotted Matte Lipstick for a punchy matte pout.

Eyeshadow
Unless you are a cut crease devotee and the latest bumper palette really excites you, then investing in premium eyeshadows doesn't feel worth it. There are an array of 10-shadow palettes available for £10 and under – see Elf, Revolution and Revlon – and inside them you'll find some great wearable shades. I also love L'Oréal Paris's new Paradise Le Shadow Stick because it's quick and easy to use – simply scribble onto lids and blend in with fingers.

The three formulas to invest in
Foundation
While you can get good foundations on the high street, your chances are a lot better when shopping from premium brands. Why? Well, they deliver a more imperceptible finish on the skin, thanks to clever skincare ingredients inside each formula. Dior does some of the best base products on the market – the new Dior Forever Hydra Nude Foundation costs £50 but you won't have to replace it often, plus it makes the skin look fresh and beautiful. Nars is also a go-to (try the Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation for medium-to-full but natural coverage) and so is Mac.
Bronzer
I have an affinity with good cream bronzers – and am yet to find a perfect one on the high street. The gel-meets-cream formulations that luxe brands, like Chanel and Charlotte Tilbury, do so well are worth the money you pay for them as they glide on, look seamless on the skin and are pretty much foolproof. Crucially, they're not glittery either.
Eyeliner
When it comes to eyeliner, there is more innovation in texture, pigment and longevity on the premium market. For example, you will simply not find a kohl pencil like Victoria Beckham Beauty's Satin Kajal Liner anywhere on the high street – both creamy and smudge-proof, it's a bestseller for a reason, even at £32. I also find that liquid liners with a fine tip and staying power are harder to find when shopping on a budget – I love Lisa Eldridge's Kitten Flick Liquid Eyeliner which, at £25, is worth every penny.

I swear by my 12-step routine to be the hottest mum on the school run & a £5 Primark buy is a must for ‘flawless' skin

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MOTHER has shared the 12-step routine she swears by to be the hottest mum on the school run. So if your skin is looking lacklustre and you're eager to have a glow up but have no idea where to start, then you've come to the right place. Not only this, but she also gave her followers a close-up look at the setting spray you need that will ensure your make-up stays in place all day. Posting on social media, Faith revealed her '12-step make-up to be the hottest on the school run', leaving many totally stunned. Faith tucked into a coffee as she kicked off her morning routine which first of all, involves the 'de-shed'. With this step, the brunette removed her hair bonnet that she slept in to protect her locks, as well as her chin strap and mouth tape, which is said to "freeze ageing". For the second step, the mother goes in with her moisturiser. Faith swore by the PS…Prep + Perfect Flawless Primer, which you can buy for just £5 from Primark. Not only does the moisturiser work to 'protect your skin from the sun', but it also provides a 'surge of moisture and hydration into the skin'. For the third step, the influencer applied a primer to her face. She confirmed that she used the Melon Jelly Dewy Primer from The Beauty Crop, which 'helps to hydrate and smooth the skin and make your make-up last all day'. Lidl is selling a £2.99 product beauty fans are racing to nab - you don't have to wear foundation AND it contains SPF50 Following this, Faith then applied a skin tint, as she swore by L'Oreal Paris True Match. The Plumping Tinted Skin Serum is just £14.99 from Boots and according to the listing, is an 'innovative formula combining the benefits of a skincare serum with the radiance and coverage of a foundation.' Top 3 beauty products every woman should be using Hayley Walker, Beauty Expert at Justmylook shared the holy-grail products every woman needs to be using. A cleanser, SPF, and hair oil are must-haves within beauty routines. A cleanser is crucial for healthy skin as it removes dirt, oil, and other impurities for flawless skin. This skincare step not only cleanses the face and removes dirt, but also prevents breakouts and premature skin ageing, helping you maintain a healthy, youthful, and blemish-free complexion. The Aveeno Face Calm+ Restore Nourishing Oat Cleanser is a go-to of mine due to its gentle formula that soothes and restores the skin's appearance and texture. SPF is non-negotiable and should be in everyone's daily skincare routine. Even on cooler, cloudier days, our skin is exposed to the sun's UV rays which can be harmful to unprotected skin and even lead to damage. These damages include sunburn, pigmentation changes, and wrinkles which can impact the skin's texture and appearance. In some cases, prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause skin cancer. Applying SPF daily prevents these damages and protects the skin from harmful rays. I recommend the Beauty Of Joseon Rice & Prebiotic Sunscreen PA++++ SPF50+ for its lightweight, non-clumping texture that absorbs quickly for a natural finish and maximum protection. Hair oil has many benefits and should be regularly used. This treatment can strengthen and protect the hair from external stressors while improving its appearance and shine. Regularly applying hair oil can also reduce breakage and even encourage hair growth for longer, fuller locks. Hair oils also target the scalp, reducing dandruff and improving its health through exfoliation. I recommend using this deeply nourishing treatment a couple of times a week or more depending on the hair's moisture levels. The Hair Syrup Rapunzel Pre-Wash Oil Treatment is a nutrient-rich treatment that revitalises strands to promote a happy scalp and healthy-looking locks. Apply the syrup throughout damp hair before washing; massage from root to tip and allow the formula to penetrate strands before rinsing and styling. For the fifth step in her routine, the mum-of-three who often wakes up at 6am to kick off her morning routine, then applied concealer under her eyes, on her chin and a small amount in the middle of her forehead. Contouring was the sixth step, which Faith used to define her cheekbones and add colour and depth to her face. She then set her face with the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder for the seventh step, which has been hailed as 'a staple in every make-up artists' kit' for an 'iconic soft-focus finish with zero flashback.' For the eighth step in the routine, Faith used a brush to add bronzer to her cheekbones, to further define and add colour to her face. I ain't got time for that and I ain't got no one to impress on that school run TikTok user After this, she then applied a blusher to her cheeks and nose. To set her make-up in place, Faith used The Beauty Crop Pore Filter Setting Mist, which is just £10 a bottle and ensures 'long-lasting wear.' Moments later, for the eleventh step in the routine, Faith applied mascara to her lashes. And to finish off her look, Faith then put lipstick and lipgloss on her plump pout. Big divide The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @faithcoe, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 117,900 views. Not only this, but it's also amassed 1,804 likes and 85 comments. You are absolutely stunning TikTok user But social media users were left divided by the clip - while numerous beauty fans were impressed and thought Faith looked 'pretty', other mums claimed they don't have the time for a 12-step routine each morning. One person said: 'I admire the dedication.' Another added: 'You are absolutely stunning.' Biggest skincare trends for 2025 Face The Future's Head of Clinic, Kimberley Medd, shared the five skincare trends predicted to take off in 2025. 1. Exosomes Exosomes are the buzzword for 2025, taking advanced skin regeneration to new heights. These micro-messengers signal skin cells to repair damage, boost collagen, and accelerate recovery, and they're a gamechanger for targeting ageing. 2. Streamlined Skincare The age of 12-step routines is fading as consumers shift to more intentional, multi-functional products. Streamlining skincare not only saves time but also reduces the risk of overloading your skin. In 2025, we'll see a rise in hybrid products that combine active ingredients for simplified, effective results. 3. Vegan Collagen Plant-based collagen will dominate the skincare world this year, providing a sustainable, ethical alternative to traditional animal-derived collagen. Expect vegan collagen in everything from moisturisers to serums. 4. The Rise Of AI AI is revolutionising the beauty landscape, making it possible for consumers to get truly personalised skincare solutions. In 2025, we predict a dramatic shift towards AI-powered tools that help people understand their skin on a deeper level. 5. Hair Loss Solutions - Hair loss is an issue that affects more men than we often realise, and it's no longer just something we're talking about behind closed doors. This year, expect to see a continued rise in demand for treatments that not only tackle hair loss but also nurture overall scalp health. A third commented: 'Super pretty.' But at the same time, one mother gasped: 'No mum has time for all that in the morning.' A second chimed in: 'Yeah I ain't got time for that and I ain't got no one to impress on that school run.' Meanwhile, one woman claimed: 'Sorry but life is just too short.' Unlock even more award-winning articles as The Sun launches brand new membership programme - Sun Club

‘I NEED that bag!' fashion fans yell about Next's fruity new accessory as they praise store's ‘insane' summer collection

A GOOD bag has the power to elevate any ordinary outfit into something extra special. So it comes as no surprise that fashion fans are racing to their nearest Next, in a bid to get their hands on one of the stunning new lemon handbags. 6 6 6 6 The store shared some of its favourite summer items in a picture slideshow on TikTok. "Psssttt - wanna see some of our fave accessories for summer?" they wrote over the top of the first snap. They then showed off the bag in question - a gorgeous beaded bright yellow number designed to look like a segment of lemon. "They need no introduction," they wrote over the picture. The £55 beaded bag also comes in an equally cute watermelon design. And it was clear the bag is going to be a sought after accessory this summer, judging by the hundreds of people commenting on the TikTok. "Neeeed that lemon bag," one wrote. "We love the lemon and watermelon bags, Next!" another praised. "Fruitylicious on the beach." "The lemon bag is going on the wishlist!" a third gushed. The summer trend dividing style queens - some call it a 'girl's best friend' but it brings back bad memories for others "Obsessed, beaded heaven," someone else said. "Sold. God sakes!" another joked. Other items included in the picture slideshow were a gorgeous shell necklace, which was paired with a green co-ord. And there are a fair few bags to choose from in store at the moment too. Like the "perfect summer beach bag" - a stunning cream option with tassels and intricate crochet detailing. Cow print is also a big trend this summer, with a neck scarf coming in the pattern to "elevate any outfit". Hottest fashion trends of 2025 Fabulous' Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend shares the biggest trends from the high street. The East/West Bag Baguette bags have had a good run, after returning from the 1990s' shoulders of Sarah Jessica Parker to modern-day fashion icons, like Hailey Bieber. In 2025, the East/West bag is a similar but elongated shape and has long, thin straps that are easy to throw over your shoulder. They've been on runway models' arms at nearly ever designer show - think Burberry, Givenchy and Bottega Veneta - and are hitting the high street now, too. Powder pink Bright fuchsia pink had its day after the release of Barbie in 2023 and now the more polished and expensive-looking pale shade is taking over for 2025. Pantone may say that it's the year of Mocha Mousse, but the catwalks say otherwise! From Prada to Erdem, the subtle look was all over the spring/summer catwalks, worn head-to-toe or on its own. If the sugary shade is too girly for you, then look to sharp suiting for a androgynous take on the colour. The shell jacket The '80s classic is back, but with a sleek and minimal new twist for 2025. We all know we're likely to see rain for most of spring, so your practical coat of choice should be a cagoule jacket. Depop revealed one of its big trend predictions for this year is retro sportswear, with surges already seen in '80s windbreakers'. Seen everywhere from the stylish streets of Copenhagen to the Miu Miu catwalk, now mums who have an emergency raincoat crumpled underneath their pushchair are very much in fashion! The turn-up jeans While the shape of jeans remains the same for this year and barrel-legs will still be everywhere, the way we're styling them is different. This season, transform your wide-leg, baggy denims into turn-ups. For this look, size doesn't matter, so while deep turn-ups are a hit from jean trend-leaders Citizens of Humanity, a slight fold is still just as good - but only as it's just one single fold. Peep-toe shoe Get your pedicures booked in sharpish, as this season your toes are the main event. After a long hiatus, the peep-toe has been welcomed back into the fashion fold, with brands like Hermes, Miu Miu and Tory Burch showing plain and embellished footwear in this style. From mules to pumps and clogs (yes, clogs will be around too!), there are lots of different styles that are set to sweep the high street. Sheer blouses See-through looks have always lived on the catwalk, but have rarely filtered into everyday life - until now. Designers Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford loved sheer looks on their S/S '25 catwalks and M&S even had sellout success with its black sheer pencil skirt last season. Expect to see more sheer looks lining supermarket aisles and high street shops in the form of skirts, tops and frocks. And there are even lace-up cow print loafers - sure to divide style fans. Fruit continues to be a big theme, with a red bag featuring miniature strawberries on it. The comments section was once again filled with people praising Next for the epic offerings, with one insisting: "Omg need it all!" "Next have excelled this summer," another added. "I fear Next is eating the other high street shops up atm???????" a third mused. "Erm ok slay!!!!!!!!" someone else commented. "Your summer pieces are insane!" another mused. While someone else said they "can't afford this". "Next is doing so good this season!" someone else concluded. 6 6
