Wall Street tech selloff deepens, European shares steady
By Jaspreet Kalra and Noel Randewich MUMBAI/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Wall Street shares dropped on Wednesday, with a tech selloff extending into a second day, while a key meeting of central bankers later this week remained in focus for currency and rates traders. The S&P 500 ended down 0.2% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 0.7%, adding to a steep decline on Tuesday. Both indexes partly recovered from deeper, earlier losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.04%. Analysts blamed a confluence of factors for the weakness in tech stocks, including concerns over steep valuations, investors exiting profitable positions, and risk aversion. "To me, tech was overbought," said Seth Hickle, managing partner at Mindset Wealth Management. "We had really good earnings, and now it's kind of natural for the market just to sell some of that good news." Wariness over U.S. President Donald Trump's growing influence over tech companies has also been in focus for investors. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is looking into the government taking equity stakes in Intel and other chip companies, two sources told Reuters. That follows other unusual revenue-sharing deals Washington recently struck with artificial intelligence chip company Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices. Apple, Alphabet and Amazon each dipped more than 1%. European shares rose, with the pan-European STOXX 600 index up 0.25%. Britain's FTSE 100 rallied 1.17% to a record high, boosted by gains in consumer and healthcare companies. FOCUS ON JACKSON HOLE The U.S. dollar weakened slightly against a basket of peers after Trump called on Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to resign. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was little changed at 3.29%, while the 2-year Treasury yield slipped to 3.74%. The focus is now on the Federal Reserve's August 21-23 Jackson Hole symposium, where Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on Friday on the economic outlook and the U.S. central bank's policy framework. Powell's remarks on the near-term outlook for interest rates will be keenly watched as traders are almost fully pricing in a rate cut next month. "Even if Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell emphasises muted unemployment over sharply revised payrolls, that would be a hard sell to both the White House and a market that is pricing in 21 bp of rate cuts for September," analysts at ING said in a note. Minutes from the Fed's July meeting, where interest rates were left unchanged, showed almost all policymakers viewed it as appropriate to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 4.25% to 4.50%, despite two dissenters. Elsewhere, Sweden's central bank kept its key interest rate on hold as expected, while the Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut policy rates to a three-year low and signaled further easing, sending the kiwi down by more than 1%. Consumer prices in Britain climbed 3.8% in July, data showed, the fastest annual rise for a Group of Seven economy. The data nudged sterling higher, but it quickly pared gains, while the fact that inflation was not even higher prompted a rally in government bonds. The benchmark 10-year gilt yield was last down 7 basis points at 4.68%. Oil prices climbed about 1% on a bigger-than-expected weekly drop in U.S. crude inventories as investors awaited the next steps in talks to end the Ukraine war, with sanctions on Russian crude remaining in place for now. Spot gold rose 1% to $3,348.70 an ounce. Rupee edges lower as dollar sales by foreign banks offset most of greenback demand
By Ashwin Manikandan MUMBAI (Reuters) - The Indian rupee slipped on Wednesday, as corporate hedging and short-term speculators bolstered demand for the greenback, most of which was met by dollar sales by foreign banks. The rupee settled at 87.0650 to the U.S. dollar against its close of 86.9500 on Tuesday when it climbed the most in over a month, boosted by speculation over Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Traders said foreign banks were active sellers of dollars on Wednesday, limiting rupee depreciation despite significant hedging by importers. A rally in local equities and position squaring also helped the Indian currency recover after recent pressure, traders said. Recent weeks have seen the rupee's direction influenced by news around U.S. tariffs on India, S&P's upgrade of the nation's sovereign credit rating and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned tax cuts on goods and services. Foreign portfolio investors turned buyers of Indian assets in the past three sessions after net selling Indian markets in the last few weeks over tariff uncertainties. "FPIs have turned steady buyers in Indian markets, encouraged by hopes that the U.S. may reconsider its plan to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports," said Amit Pabari, managing director at CR Forex. The return of foreign inflows comes even as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday accused India of profiteering from its purchases of Russian oil during the war in Ukraine. Other Asian currencies traded mixed on the day, while the dollar index was slightly higher at 98.21 as on 1549 IST. Rupee traders will also tune in to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday, which may provide clues on the U.S.'s interest rate trajectory. 'A signal that cuts may be delayed could strengthen the dollar, while any indication of looser policy may weigh on it and encourage risk-on sentiment,' Pabari added. FCEL, have surged 109.3% and declined 53.2%, respectively. Plug Power Lags Industry & S&P 500 Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The company has been subject to a high cash burn rate and negative gross margins over the past several quarters. However, the margins are on an improving trend, driven by its cost reduction and supply-chain optimization efforts, price increases and progress in leveraging its hydrogen platform. Amid this, the leading hydrogen energy stock is trading above both its 50-day and 200-day moving average. PLUG Stock's 50-Day & 200-Day Moving Averages Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Some investors might see this dip as an opportunity to buy Plug Power, considering the vast long-term market potential of green hydrogen and its solid product pipeline. However, it would be prudent to assess if it is the right time to invest in the stock. Let's delve deeper. Challenges Faced by PLUG Stock PLUG witnessed a significant decline in the number of hydrogen site installations in 2024, which reduced from 52 to 15 on a year-over-year basis. In the first six months of 2025, this number reduced to four from eight in the prior-year comparable period. This has been adversely impacting its revenues related to the sales of hydrogen infrastructure. Additionally, fewer liquefier projects and a slower rate of progress on the existing ventures have been hurting revenues from the sales of cryogenic storage equipment and major issue that has plagued Plug Power is its inability to generate positive gross margins and cash inflows. It recorded a gross margin of negative 31% in second-quarter 2025 compared with a gross margin of negative 92% in the year-ago quarter. Meanwhile, its operating cash outflow totaled $297.4 million in the first six months of 2025 compared with $422.5 million in the year-ago the weak liquidity position, the company has been selling shares to raise funds for its operations and invest in hydrogen plants. PLUG's another peer, Bloom Energy, is a leading provider of solid-oxide fuel cell systems for on-site power generation. Long-Run Prospects Look Bright Plug Power's strong expertise in providing and installing electrolyzers is underlined by its significant presence in Rochester, NY, with its Gigafactory being one of the biggest PEM manufacturing facilities in the results continue to show signs of recovery in the second quarter of 2025. After witnessing growth of 11% in the first quarter, PLUG's revenues surged 21% year over year in the second quarter. Revenues were driven by robust demand for its GenDrive fuel cells, GenFuel hydrogen infrastructure and GenEco electrolyzer platforms. Its electrolyzer revenues tripled year over year to $45 million in the quarter, as the business scales first-quarter 2025, PLUG also launched Project Quantum Leap to generate more than $200 million in annualized savings. As part of the project, it expects to benefit from sales growth, pricing actions, inventory and capex management, and increased leverage of its hydrogen production platform. PLUG expects the project to boost its cash flow and reduce the cash burn rate in the quarters this year, Plug Power secured a loan guarantee worth $1.66 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the construction of six green hydrogen production facilities. This marks a significant step in the expansion of its domestic manufacturing and hydrogen production capabilities. Also, in January 2025, Plug Power signed a three-gigawatt (GW) agreement with Allied Green Ammonia in Australia, which reflects rising global demand for green hydrogen. Going by some estimates that state that the green hydrogen energy market may grow to $30 billion by 2030, PLUG offers solid long-term growth opportunities. PLUG's Estimate Revisions The Zacks Consensus Estimate for PLUG's bottom line for 2025 and 2026 has decreased in the past 60 days. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Valuation From a valuation standpoint, Plug Power is trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of a negative 3.64X against the industry average of 22.41X. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Final Take on PLUG While the significant dip in PLUG stock is concerning, its strong foothold in the market, innovative product portfolio and strategic investments and partnerships are likely to drive its long-term performance.
