Husband of missing woman in Greece said he was 'laughed at' searching for her

Metro16 hours ago
The husband of a British woman who has gone missing in Greece said he was laughed at by locals as he desperately searched for his wife.
Chris Bourda, 66, woke up from his sun lounger on Ofrynio beach, Kavala, on Friday afternoon to discover his wife Michele, 59, had disappeared.
The mum-of-one's belongings were still on her sun bed, but she was nowhere to be found.
He told the Daily Mail: 'I quickly ran to the toilet and knocked on the ladies but she wasn't in there. I then ran to the beach to look again in the water.
'I then quickly went back to the waiter to say my wife was missing, have you seen her and he started laughing.'
Chris explained to the waiter his wife had 'psychological problems' and needed to call the police.
But officers did not arrive at the scene for another two hours, forcing him to continue his search alone.
Chris said: 'The police didn't do anything on the day. One guest who was there that day said she didn't see any police and I didn't see any police that day either, not one single policeman at the beach.'
The search boat is only being used at night or early in the morning to 'not disturb or concern the tourists'.
Chris, a pharmacist, has been left searching for his wife alone, and has gone without sleep to devote all his time trying to find her.
He said: 'For days and nights I have gone up down the coast, searched bushes, olive groves, empty houses, building sites, later I went to the hills, nothing.
'I asked the police if they think that she is alive, why don't they use dogs, drones, helicopters and they replied where shall we search? It's a vast area?
'I don't think my wife would have gone to somebody in the car or anything. I really don't. I have tried everywhere but one person alone is very difficult to find something.'
Michele suffers from bouts of depression and anxiety, Chris explained, and on one occasion disappeared while they were living in London.
But police acted quickly and found her on the night she went missing.
The couple, who now live in Glasgow, had decided to visit Greece and seeing Chris's family in Germany and had planned to stay for six weeks.
He has since made a complaint to the British Embassy in Athens believing Greek police are not doing enough to help him find his wife.
A sports instructor claimed he saw Michele swimming out in deep waters and shouted at her to not go any further.
He has since withdrawn his statement to police. More Trending
Chris said: 'But even if he was shouting at her 'where are you going, come back' there were other people on the beach and I cannot understand how nobody, not one person, would see her or hear her.
'Surely someone would notice if she went out and didn't come back?'
Missing person charity LifeLine Hellas issued a silver alert – typically used for missing adults with dementia or Alzheimer's – saying Michele's 'life is in danger' and asking anyone who had seen her to get in touch.

Private tutor who abused young girls in their homes during lessons jailed

A private tutor who sexually assaulted five of his students has been jailed for 11 years. Umair Iqbal, 37, abused young girls at their homes he visited to conduct lessons over a 10-year period. Among his victims was a young muslim girl who he assaulted from when she was just eight years old. An investigation was opened into the maths and Quran tutor, from Cheetham Hill, Manchester in October 2020, after a 15-year-old girl reported his behaviour. She had believed for years that the abuse was her own fault, before finding the courage to tell her family and police. The tutor was found to have routinely abused his authority his female students between 2010 and 2020. Following a four week trial last month, Iqbal was sentenced to a total of 14 years, including 11 in prison, of which he must serve two thirds, and a further three on license. DC Alex Dodd, who led the investigation, said: 'All five victims were young Muslim girls from good families, abused by a person in a position of trust and silenced through fear of getting in trouble or being blamed for the abuse. 'Securing justice for these victims is a positive outcome for Rochdale's complex safeguarding team. The multi-agency work we do in Rochdale is a collaborative force for good. 'I would like to recognise and thank all five victims and their families for their determination during the lengthy investigation and four-week trial, which was a distressing process for them. 'We encourage anyone who feels they may have been subjected to Mr Iqbal's behaviour to come forward and report it on 101 quoting 'Operation Ganister.' Blood-soaked crack addict grabs woman by the neck in lift at block of flats

Lee Clough, 38, was blood-soaked and high on crack cocaine when he pounced on the woman and grabbed her by the neck in a lift at Church Walk House in Walker, Newcastle. A terrified grandmother was strangled in a lift by a blood-soaked crack cocaine addict. The horrifying incident occurred around 3pm on March 28 this year when the victim went to visit her friend at Church Walk House, Walker, Newcastle. ‌ Lee Clough, 38, of no fixed address, has left his victim so "scared and anxious" by the incident, she feels she can no longer return to the Newcastle area where her family and friend live. ‌ Prosecutor Jordan Parkinson told Newcastle Crown Court that the woman was attacked by a badly injured Clough as she entered the lift at the flats, leaving her petrified. This news comes after a man brutally killed a woman on the first date and left her body parts around town. ‌ Police shame British drugs mules by making them pose for photos with suitcases Miss Parkinson said: "He reached through, grabbing the door as they were closing. He grabbed her by the neck, making it difficult for her to breathe. He lifted her off the floor and against the wall. The incident is captured on CCTV. He can be seen covered in blood, shouting 'give me everything you've got'. She believes he was referring to the drugs she had." In a statement, the victim said: "As a result of the incident I feel scared and anxious to return to my friend's address or Walker in general. My children and grandchildren live in Walker, meaning I visit there. I fear for my own safety and I'm terrified of another chance encounter occurring again." ‌ Approximately 45 minutes later, Clough arrived at his ex-partner's house, still drenched in blood and violating a restraining order imposed for stalking her. She wasn't home but saw him on a ring doorbell camera where he claimed "I've been stabbed to bits". Clough, with a history of 25 previous convictions and two suspended sentences - for stalking his ex and drug driving - admitted to intentional strangulation and breaching a restraining order. A previous charge of attempted robbery was dismissed. He has now been sentenced to 21 months in prison, reports Chronicle Live. Recorder Toby Hedworth KC told him: "It must have been extremely frightening for her, given how she was grabbed by the throat and pinned against the side of the lift, at a time when you were covered in blood and shouting at her." ‌ Kate Barnes, defending, said: "He had visited the flats in question to buy drugs. While there, he was attacked viciously, with a machete to his head, arms and legs. "It was a chance encounter (with the woman in the lift) and he does know her. He remonstrated with her because he thought she had taken property from him while they were taking drugs. "He doesn't accept he made any threats to take her property. It's clear from the footage there was no attempt to take the bag she was carrying. "Having assaulted her, he went to the closest property he knew of, which was his previous partner's address, to do no more than seek assistance from her, bleeding heavily as he was. He is extremely apologetic for any upset he may have caused her." Miss Barnes stated that Clough, who had previously been employed and had his own business, was addicted to crack cocaine at the time of the offences but is now drug free.
