IPTs permitted to conduct online classes during 46th ASEAN Summit

PUBLIC and private institutions of higher learning (IPTs) are allowed to conduct teaching and learning (PdP) sessions either online or in person during the 46th ASEAN Summit.
In a statement, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) said IPTs have been advised to check the location, timing and duration of affected routes from May 26 to 28 to ensure the institutions' staff and students are not affected by traffic congestions or road closures.
'Students and staff who are affected by road closure can get in touch with their respective higher education institution for more information.
'The ministry is confident that this PdP will make it easier for those affected to plan their journey and at the same time ensure the learning sessions can run smoothly,' said the statement.
On May 19, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said six major highways and 25 main roads, particularly those leading to Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), hotels, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Subang Airport and Istana Negara will be closed between May 23 and 28 in conjunction with the Summit.
On the same day, the Education Ministry (MOE) permitted 71 schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to implement home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) from May 26 until 28.
This is to ensure that the students' learning sessions are not disrupted, having taken into account the road closures and security measures in place during the Summit.
The Summit, taking place from May 22 to 27, will feature meetings at the senior official, ministerial and head of government levels.
Apart from the summit, there will also be two high-level meetings scheduled: The second ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.
Malaysia assumes the chairmanship this year for the fifth time, with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' reflecting the nation's aspiration to shape a united and prosperous ASEAN.

PETALING JAYA, June 4 (Bernama) -- The percentage of public transport usage in Malaysia has only reached 20 per cent to date, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the figure remains below the 40 per cent target outlined in the National Transport Policy 2019–2030. 'The national transport policy from 2019 to 2030 is already in place. So, our challenge is how to ensure that this policy is realised according to its intended goals,' he said when met after the Ilmuwan Malaysia Madani Siri 6 forum at Menara Prasarana here today. The forum discussed the topic 'Transportation for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport', chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Commenting further, Loke said the implementation of the 'Road to Rail' initiative is currently being carried out in phases and is expected to have a significant impact on the country's logistics sector. 'We are actively promoting the use of rail. That's why one of our focus initiatives is 'Road to Rail' , to encourage more usage of railways for the transportation of containers and goods,' he said. 'When the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is completed, it will boost the use of rail to transport goods and containers to the East Coast, thereby reducing reliance on road transport such as lorries,' he added. -- BERNAMA

PM Anwar Proposes Strategic Housing Development Near Public Transport
GENERAL PETALING JAYA, June 4 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that new people's housing projects be developed on or near public transport stations, as a move to encourage more comprehensive use of the public transport system. Anwar said that such a housing development concept would not only provide more strategic residences for low-income groups but also pave the way for a more sustainable and organised urban lifestyle. 'There are proposals to develop housing directly on top of public transport stations, but this requires certain amendments (to laws) and is currently being worked on. 'An example is the Kota MADANI project, where I emphasised comprehensive and centralised basic amenities for the welfare of the people, including vertical development,' he said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the Malaysia MADANI Scholars' Forum (FIM) Series 6 at Menara Prasarana here, tonight. The forum, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), discussed the topic 'Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality, and Sustainability of Public Transport'. Also participating as panellists were Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Prasarana Malaysia Berhad President and Group Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah; and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Meanwhile, Anwar said that open discourse platforms like the forum were crucial to ensure government policies were formulated by considering the voices of various parties, including academicians, industry experts, government supporters, and even the opposition. Anwar said the organisation of such forums proved that the government did not shut down criticism, but instead encouraged differing views, provided they were delivered professionally and constructively.

Singapore and Philippines to expand collaboration in renewable energy, sustainability and healthcare
MANILA: Singapore and the Philippines will deepen their collaboration in several areas, including renewable energy, sustainability, healthcare and civil service development. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr announced this at a joint press conference on Wednesday (June 4), the first day of an introductory visit to Manila by PM Wong. At the press conference at Malacanang Palace following their meeting, PM Wong thanked President Marcos for his invitation to visit and said the bilateral relationship 'has never been better'. 'It is a partnership that has been carefully nurtured over the decades by successive generations of leaders and officials,' he said. 'It is built on a high degree of mutual trust and respect, and it has enabled mutually beneficial cooperation over a wide range of areas, for example in trade and investments.' On renewable energy, the two countries agreed to deepen both bilateral and regional cooperation, and to accelerate efforts towards realising the Asean power grid. This is a plan to connect the electricity networks of the group's 10 member countries to enable cross-border power trading by 2045. Marcos said Singapore will continue to be a major partner in the Philippines' aspiration to diversify its energy sources, and hailed the robust ties between the two countries. PM Wong said Singapore companies are interested in renewable energy in the Philippines, including solar and wind projects. 'Such projects can generate economic opportunities for the Philippines, while supporting the Philippines' renewable energy targets,' he added. On the sustainability front, the two countries are working to finalise a legally binding implementation agreement for cross-border carbon credit transfers that is aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement governs international cooperation to tackle climate change, and includes guidelines for countries to trade carbon credits to meet their climate targets. An implementation agreement will facilitate commercial participation in carbon credit projects, which can spur technology transfer, green investment and create good jobs, said PM Wong. Marcos expressed his appreciation that Singapore has ensured the welfare, safety and security of the over 200,000 Filipinos working in the city state, while PM Wong said Singapore is committed to being a good second home for them. 'They live and work in Singapore, contributing to our economy and society and enriching our cultural diversity,' said PM Wong. 'I conveyed to the President Singapore's appreciation for their invaluable contributions, especially the Filipino healthcare workers who stood with us during the Covid-19 pandemic.' Marcos noted that the two sides are working to conclude an agreement on health cooperation and a digital leadership programme between the Philippine Civil Service Commission and the National University of Singapore (NUS). Besides NUS' leadership programme, PM Wong said Temasek Foundation has also been active in the healthcare space in Taguig City – which is to the east of Manila – and the two countries will continue to step up cooperation in this field. Both countries also agreed to work 'shoulder to shoulder' at the Asean level, so as to accelerate regional integration and unlock the grouping's full potential, said PM Wong. The Philippines can count on Singapore's full support for its Asean chairmanship in 2026, he added. 'We will coordinate closely, because Singapore takes over from the Philippines the Asean chairmanship the following year,' he said. 'The Singapore-Philippines partnership is built on firm and growing connections between our countries,' he said in a toast speech.
