IPTs permitted to conduct online classes during 46th ASEAN Summit
by FARAH SOLHI PUBLIC and private institutions of higher learning (IPTs) are allowed to conduct teaching and learning (PdP) sessions either online or in person during the 46th ASEAN Summit. In a statement, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) said IPTs have been advised to check the location, timing and duration of affected routes from May 26 to 28 to ensure the institutions' staff and students are not affected by traffic congestions or road closures. 'Students and staff who are affected by road closure can get in touch with their respective higher education institution for more information. 'The ministry is confident that this PdP will make it easier for those affected to plan their journey and at the same time ensure the learning sessions can run smoothly,' said the statement. On May 19, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said six major highways and 25 main roads, particularly those leading to Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), hotels, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Subang Airport and Istana Negara will be closed between May 23 and 28 in conjunction with the Summit. On the same day, the Education Ministry (MOE) permitted 71 schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to implement home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) from May 26 until 28. This is to ensure that the students' learning sessions are not disrupted, having taken into account the road closures and security measures in place during the Summit. The Summit, taking place from May 22 to 27, will feature meetings at the senior official, ministerial and head of government levels. Apart from the summit, there will also be two high-level meetings scheduled: The second ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. Malaysia assumes the chairmanship this year for the fifth time, with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' reflecting the nation's aspiration to shape a united and prosperous ASEAN.

71 schools in Klang Valley can switch to home-based learning
PETALING JAYA: A total of 71 schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have been granted permission to conduct home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) during the Asean Summit from May 26-27, says the Education Ministry. The decision was made in view of road closures and security measures that will be in place during the regional meeting. 'This is to ensure the learning process for students at those schools are not affected. 'Parents, guardians, students, teachers and school staff are advised to refer to the official channels of the respective schools to obtain further information on the implementation of PdPR,' the ministry said in a statement. It added that those involved can draw on their experience with PdPR during the Covid-19 pandemic and other disasters. Public Service Department (PSD) director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said on Friday that several ministries, departments and government agencies had begun receiving work-from-home (WFH) applications from civil servants in view of the upcoming summit. This came about following the advice of the PSD that civil servants likely to be affected by traffic congestion during the Asean Summit could apply for WFH arrangements. On another matter, Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud said drones will not be banned in the vicinity of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre during the Asean Summit. He said aircraft would also be allowed to fly over the area throughout the event. 'Any existing restrictions or flight bans remain in force only in areas officially gazetted and announced through Aeronautical Information Publication documents and Notices to Airmen. 'All parties are advised to refer to these official sources to ensure compliance with current aviation regulations,' he told Bernama. He said CAAM is working closely with security agencies, including the police and air force, to coordinate flight activities in the interest of public safety and security. 'This collaboration is important not only in the context of airspace control, but also in ensuring that every flight operating in Malaysia complies with the stipulated safety regulations,' he added.

NUTP: Parents' role crucial for PdPR participation during Asean Summit
KUALA LUMPUR: Parents' cooperation is vital to ensure students participate actively in their home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) from May 26 to 28, said the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP). Its secretary-general, Fouzi Singon, said NUTP welcomed the government's decision to allow 71 schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to implement PdPR during the 46th Asean Summit. "Both teachers and students have experience conducting PdPR from the Covid-19 pandemic, which will help ensure a smoother implementation. "However, NUTP emphasised that parental cooperation is crucial in ensuring students participate actively in their home-based learning sessions. "Teaching and learning do not necessarily have to be conducted entirely online. "It can also be carried out through various methods, including printed modules and assignments prepared for completion at home," he said when contacted. He added that teachers were advised to remain home and be on standby during the two days of PdPR implementation. "Teachers must be aware of their service obligations and understand the need to remain home throughout the official working period. This is part of their professional responsibility." He said the option of replacement school days should be considered, if feasible. "Replacement school days may be a more suitable alternative in some cases, as these could better ensure teacher safety and offer more direct learning benefits to students through face-to-face interaction and clearer understanding of lessons," he said.
